March Madness 2014 Live Discussion

Me... *yelling at tv* WHAT THE F*CK?!?!?! HOW CAN YOU BE SO STUPID!

That should never happen!

You seem like an educated basketball fan, I posed this question to a couple friends of mine: Do you think coaches should be allowed to call timeouts from the bench, or would you rather see it be only players on the court able to call them (of course sometimes directed by the coach to do so)?

I didn't expect anyone to win the billion dollar challenge, but damn, not a single bracket left. Guess it's back to the salt mines for me.

Aside from how good Duke is, I've never understood why people dislike them. It simply doesn't make sense as to how people can not like a classy program like Duke, where the kids are generally good kids, they go to class and graduate and their coach is about as classy as they come.

We need more basketball programs like Duke in college basketball.

With me it's because I'm also a fan of UNC, so just no to Duke.

So Mercer winning was double the fun for me!

Speaking of UNC, HELL of a win tonight.

Coaches should be allowed. There are many times where it's so much easier for the coach to do it.

At least that makes sense.

For me it's a lot of stuff that's beyond Duke's control.

1. The Laettner shot being shown so often.

2. Dick Vitale bringing them up every single game no matter who is playing.

3. That on the court huddle they do. I know a lot of teams do it but I remember Duke doing it before everyone else. I can't explain why but that has always looked stupid to me.

I get that, but unlike the Cowboys, Yankees and Lakers they don't do anything to make you not like them. Jerry Jones is a joke. The Yankees try to buy championships instead of developing them like other teams have to (and America hates rich people spending money to get their way). And the Lakers have been dysfunctional since Kobe arrived.

But Duke isn't like that at all. Coach K is a classy coach. He preaches a great message. His players graduate and aren't ********s on the court or off. Yes, they are successful, but there's really no other reason to dislike them.

I guess I speak as more of an old man, but it bothers me that a team/program who does things the right way has such hatred from people. It's like people forget what college sports are supposed to be about.

Eh, some of their guys aren't exactly angels. Vitale, even though I don't mind him, loves to get on their jock pretty often. And the Crazies don't really need an explanation.

Yes, Coach K is a respectable guy, but that's not all to look at when looking at a program. If the Duke team and players were as good as they are but in an obscure area like Montana, the hate wouldn't be close. It's everything that goes into a program (much what is out of a teams control) that causes hate to happen.

Same can be said about Saban and Alabama right now, or Carroll and USC, Meyer and Florida, Calipari and Kentucky, etc.

That's actually the reason I don't like it. I think players should be coached to think on their feet in the heat of battle. It seems too easy for coaches to call timeouts. But I respect your opinion.

Maybe if Kentucky would have played better defense? ;)

Vitale brings a ton of teams up every game.

As a coach, I've always thought it was a tremendous thing.

In comparison to most programs across the country, they are.

Same can be said about Saban and Alabama right now, or Carroll and USC, Meyer and Florida, Calipari and Kentucky, etc.
Not really. Saban is dirty as fuck, everyone knows it. Pete Carroll was dirty when he coached in college too, Calipari clearly doesn't care about his kids getting an education and when Meyer was in the SEC, rumors are he was the dirtiest coach in the game.

No, they are not like Duke.

Pitino told Pelfrey to play center field. Somehow that was interpreted as RUN AWAY FROM LAETTNER AS FAST AS YOU CAN.

Vitale brings a ton of teams up every game.

One of his nicknames is Dukey V. He does indeed bring up a lot more but none like Duke.

Well as a fan that has lived in Lexington, Kentucky my entire life, it makes me want to put everyone associated with Duke into a woodchipper, fry up their remains and use their crispy remains to fill in potholes along UK's streets.

I guess Louisville fans would just say that's what you get with the high IQs at Kentucky. :)

He did for a while, but he's not nearly as bad anymore. And the biggest reason he was called Dukey V was because he used to call so many of their games...but then again, they have been an elite program for 25 years, so I don't see why that's surprising.

I guess sports fandom is rarely rational.

To quote the t-shirt I have in my closet:

What's the difference between the real thing and a cheap imitation?

65 miles and 5 national championships.

Well I haven't listened to commentary on a full sporting event in years. I usually mute the TV, partially because of Vitale getting on my nerves over the years.

I guess sports fandom is rarely rational.

I'm a rational UK fan by comparison.
