I think it's the idea of a face being a hero who stands alone against evil. When you have like 4 faces banding together, it makes the faces look like they're too weak to do anything on their own. Also, most face stables are big names banding together, not a big name and lackeys like heel stables are at times.

Probably the three way at Unbreakable. It's not my favorite though.
