With regard to the last few posts, I can't speak for people who posted earlier in the thread, but I don't think it's so much that we as individuals are personally offended by fat jokes. At least, I'm not. However, my personal issue with it is:
1. A face commentator is making fun of a heel person with a series of fat jokes. Like it or not, faces get emulated by kids. Like it or not, there are some kids who will hear those jokes, think they are funny, and use them or similar jokes against other kids at school for a laugh.
2. A face commentator, making fun of someone's weight, whether that person is a heel or not, is not in line with their anti-bullying campaign. In fact, it is the exact opposite. Even worse is that when Jerry does it during commentary, he is effectively doing it in a manner where he is making fun of an individual because she is "different" than the norm, and doing it in a manner in which she cannot defend herself. If the WWE wants to promote anti-bullying, then they really should not at the same time have someone verbally making fun of someone's weight. That does count as bullying, so this is hypocritical.
3. Even more hypocritical is the fact that Jerry and everyone acted disgusted when the Bella twins made fun of Kharma's weight, stating how inappropriate it was. Then the next few weeks he does the exact same thing with Vickie. Mixed messages here.
Some of you also state that it's ok because Jerry is a face and Vickie a heel, so it's ok to insult a heel. Ok...but again, mixed messages. It's like saying that if you are a kid and there's someone you don't like, it's ok to make fat jokes at their expense. And in this case, it's ok for a guy to insult a woman with respect to her weight. Let's face it, from a very young age, women and girls are given the message that unless you are thin and modelesque, there is something wrong with you. Maybe things have changed since I went to school, but overweight boys and girls (especially girls) were often made fun of, sadly. In society (or at least American society) there's also the general message that it's ok for men to be overweight, but overweight women are repulsive, and meant to be ridiculed and scorned. Jerry insulting Vickie every week encourages that: it gives the message to young girls that being fat is terrible, and to guys that it is ok to insult women just because they are overweight.
Yes, some of you (such as iwinulouse) state something along the lines of: "its the parents responsibility to teach their own kids right from wrong and what not, so you cant really blame the wwe for it" absolutely correct, but you know what? sadly, a lot of parents don't. And a lot of parents can't follow their kids around all the time so they don't know how they act on the playground. So why give the kids someone to emulate, in Jerry constantly insulting someone who is overweight? And I know some people will think in response "No one is going to start being mean and insulting to women just because Jerry in the WWE does it" and you could be right. But even so, why reinforce the idea that it is ok?
Again, in the end, I am not personally offended by the fat jokes against Vickie. I think they are in poor taste and I don't think they add anything whatsoever, but if they don't stop, so be it. But in the end, my point is that If the WWE truly wants to be a PG show and take a stand against bullying, then they need to pull the plug on these fat jokes because they are giving off mixed messages and behaving hypocritically.
