Highest High / Lowest Low

The A-list of the B-team
So another thread got me thinking about one of Mick Foleys books, when he was talking about his best and worst moments of his career. It started think about my highs and lows as a long time fan and I am curious as to others. I'm talking about time you totally marked out big time. For me it's these two.

High: Steamboat/Savage WM3. I was a huge Steamboat fan. He was comming back from a throat injury and was gonna take that IC title from Savage. Man I marked out huge for this one, I swear I might have done victory laps when he won.

Low: The Final Nitro. I just had this feeling after watching Sting and Flair, hearing Tony Schiavone talk about "putting Regals ass over on TV" that it wouldn't be the same. It wasn't really the same after that for me, don't know why, maybe it's age.

High: Im with you on Steamboat. But I have to go with his World Title victory over Flair in the cage.

Low: The Owen fall PPV I guess. Me and some friends were watching it together. Remember the camera panning off to the side, and JR talking. Was along time ago, and dont remember any of the matches that ppv now. But from that point when the camera panned off, I can recall pretty much every moment, and still picture all the happenings surrounding it. From the dialect used, to King getting up leaving the table and everything else.

For me the low is Benoit. That just deflated me completely. It was 13 months ago and I still think it's jsut a matter of time before he pops up. Such a tragic event.

High- Flair retirement. I've been a fan for 20 years, and I've never been moved to tears. Simply perfect.

Highest High - Honestly, I don't know, but if I had to guess, it might be Shawn Michaels winning at WrestleMania 12.

Lowest Low - I can't pinpoint the date or whatever, but around 99, I was just so fed up with the way wrestling was, where it was just dominated by Austin, the Rock, and nobody else, that I had decided to stop watching. I was a huge fan, and I just couldn't take it anymore. So I had actually stopped watching wrestling, COMPLETELY...not even like "I'll catch an episode of Raw here or there"...and I didn't start tuning back in until the end of 2006, but I still wasn't back to being a fan until roughly a little before 07's WrestleMania. But during that near 10-year hiatus, the lowest low of them all was when I had heard that they made the Undertaker into a biker. Taker and HBK have always been my two favorites, and with HBK gone and Taker as a biker, I figured the entire WWF (cause yeah, the "WWE" still seems odd to me) was just in a horrid place and I was missing nothing. The only thing that got me back into it around the end of 06 was a friend of mine saying "DX is back together", which gave me hope haha.

Runner up for lowest low - Owen Hart's death. Damn was that depressing. No real need to elaborate.

Low - For me its also the death of Benoit because, correct me if I'm wrong, the night I saw that he had passed was the night they were supposed to do the McMahon memorial thing on RAW. And after seeing the black screen with just Benoits picture saying 1967-2007, I couldn't believe it. Then seeing vince in the ring in an empty arena, my heart sank. And it wasn't just the death of Benoit, it was everything that ocurred in the following weeks and even months. From the all the coverage on the news, for some reason and i hate to say it, it just made me sick to be a wrestling fan.

High - I'll have to say Undertakers wins at Wrestlemania. I choose Undertaker because for some reason, I mark out for him like crazy. And at Wrestlemania, just that much more.

I could probably think of something better but I've only been a fan of wrestling since about the end of 2005. And that just limits the stuff I've been able to see along with my age. Sure I went back and watched stuff even before my birth, but I chose things that I actually lived through.

Low - Benoit tragedy, I wasn't his biggest fan but respected his in-ring talents. His death shocked me to the core as for some reason I always thought of him as a solid, nice guy. I don't want to spark a debate or anything so I'll close by saying that was the lowest point for me as a wrestling fan.

High - Not too many moments I can remember tbh, maybe HBK-Angle at WM21. I can remember thinking after that match, "holy shit" because it was such a tremendous match between two of the most talented wrestlers ever.

low- recently: seeing more promos than wrestling.

less recently: the loss of Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit. They came to the wwe together as the radicalz, and they departed at the time the wwe needed them the most.

high- recently: that 30 ft. swanton from jeff hardy to orton made me mark out as well as the whisper in the wind to umaga from the tops of the steel cage, and seeing evan bourne gives me hope that the wwe will start getting quality wrestlers again.

less recently: hearing JR get excited over stone cold stunners. van terminators.

Lowest Low- the Benoit tragedy, I was talking with my friend on the phone when I saw the graphic pop-up of Nacny, Daniel, and Chris. My heart sank and I told him I'd talk to him later. That was the first time anything involving wrestling brought a tear to my eye. He is one of my top 3, favorite wrestlers and that just crushed me. (I didn't really watch wrestling when Eddie passed, but it probably would have been the same)

Highest High- Seeing Ric Flair getting a proper send-off at WrestleMaina in a great match with Shawn Michaels and his "official" send-off on RAW the next night. (the first time that something to do with wrestling, that wasn't death related, brought a tear to my eye)

High point: Flair's final two days as an active wrestler on the WWE roster. The WM Match between Flair and Michaels was the best wrestling match I've seen in years. I can't remember the last time I was sucked into and invested in a wrestling match. HBK was without a doubt, the perfect choice to retire Flair. He put on an incredible match, and gave Flair the sendoff he deserved. The following night, the sendoff was just incredible, and it was touching to see the entire roster, plus some faces from the past give him the sendoff he deserved.

Low Point: My all-time favorite wrestler deciding to kill his wife, child, and then himself.

Low: the Loss of Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit, and further back Owen Hart
High: The night Eddie and Chris hugged in the Ring at Wrestlemania, and the Night Chris and Bret honored the fallen Hart.

Highest Point: Undertaker returning as the deadman after the Biker gimmick. I love Taker and that's why I loved seeing the true Undertaker back. Also, all of the Undertaker's entrances make me mark.

Lowest Point: Owen Hart, Chris Benoit, and Eddie Guerrero's deaths and tribute shows. The emotion that was displayed by the wrestlers and the shock and sadness when they died was tremendous. During the tributes shows I was fighting back tears and some points I couldn't help it.

Low: Have to go with everyone else in saying the low point for me is Benoit. It hurt me so badly and was a huge tragedy for the business.

High: Shawn winning the WWE championship for the first time. A true Boyhood dream coming true. Best moment ever.

Highest - Wrestlemania 22: I was there live at the Allstate arena. I had never been to a live wrestling event before and for Wrestlemania to be my first, it was magical. It's only the second time ever it has come to Chicago. I originally had a seat in the nosebleeds, but the stage was built so high, they tarped some seats off, mine included and I was re-located to the lower level to a much better seat. I saw the action up-close, the energy was exhilerating, the sound deafening and the crowd got me so pumped, I yelled until my throat got sore. Watching RVD win MITB was the best thing all night.

The Lowest - Eddie Guerrero Dies: News got out the morning of my birthday celebration and I just wasn't the same all day. By then I had managed to get WM22 tickets and it pained me to know I wouldn't see Eddie there the following year. He is one of my all-time favorites, and knowing he was slated to win the World Heavyweight title, it hurt. When Stephanie talked about how much he loved his kids and made mention of it, I just broke down and cried. His tribute was beautifully done, I can't hear Pain by Johnny Cash without remembering Eddie, now but it makes me happy that he passed on after having redeemed himself, patched things up with his family and doing what he loved all his life; wrestling. The man was one of a kind in the ring, he had a passion for the business few do and he is a true wrestling legend.

Before I do this topic, I'm going to abstain from using a wrestler's death because along with being harsh to bring up again, it feels obvious to me. I actually cried when Eddie died, and felt terrible for Owen's death and for the first 3 days of Benoit. So if everyone doesn't mind, I'm going to post a "lowest of the low" that doesn't involve the death of someone.

Highest High: The Undertaker defeating Batista for the World Heavyweight Title at Wrestlemania 23. I've been a dedicated Undertaker fan since 1991, and even though he won the belt other times before that, this match really was something special, especially not knowing if the WM streak would continue, and getting hit with the Batista-Bomb for the near-fall. When Taker finally hit the Tombstone for the win, I felt this huge sigh of relief and excitement!

2nd place: Mankind winning his first WWF title. This will go along with my Lowest Low, but watching Mankind, who was tossed off a cage and beaten off like a dog win the title from The Rock, and watching the fans and wrestlers scream and celebrate, this was truly the underdog moment of the decade. Of all people to win the WWF title, a guy who wasn't in traditional gear and wrestled much more recklessly yet still was popular, and I never looked elsewhere for great wrestling.

Lowest Low: Vince Russo's speech at Bash at the Beach 2000. Don't get me wrong...I loved that Booker T won his first WCW Championship. In fact, the only reason why it isn't the 1st or 2nd highest of the high is because of Vince Russo tainting this event for me. Whether it was a shoot or a work, I did not need to hear Russo bitching and whining about how bad Hogan is, nor did I care to hear his profanity-laced tirade for 5+ minutes. Maybe he was trying to work the crowd, the "boys in the back", whatever. I like to watch and enjoy wrestling, not be bombarded with "this is real life" and "no script here" comments. Let wrestling tell the story the way it has been for years. WCW would have a better chance if not for moments like this. No WWF\WWE PPV has ever someone just lay out to be pinned without even a move, yet WCW had THREE such instances (Hogan, Eddie Guerrero and Jarrett) and no one liked or responded to it. Why did they keep doing it?!

2nd place: The Fingerpoke of Doom. Along with never being a Hogan fan ever, I literally watched Nitro and said, what the fuck?! After this and watching Mankind win the WWF title, there was no doubt that WCW to me was 2nd rate. After this, I sparingly watch Nitro just to see Booker T matches.
