Heels Going Over

I always hear so much whining about how a heel goes over in a match. How he doesn't go over clean enough times or how he has to resort to stablemates to win matches and that sort of stuff. Last I checked, heel's shouldn't win cleanly. But obviously as time evolves, so does opinion. Men like Triple H, Edge, Randy Orton and at an early point of his run as Champion, The Miz had a tendency to drive controversy about how they won their matches as heels. Triple H resorted to Evolution, Randy tried various things, at one point getting himself blatantly disqualified, Edge had La Familia and all sorts of power miss use and for his early period, Miz cheated. These are all the major heels of the past decade. Yet they all drew their share of controversy. But why? If cheating and creating all sort of havoc isn't how they should win, then how? They are heels. Going over clean tends to draw positive reactions no matter how much of a jerk they are. A few good examples being Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle. I say let them cheat their hearts out. It makes their eventual fall that much sweeter. But of course, that's just me. What about you?

I agree, heels dont need clean wins. It also helps storyline wise, eg in a no dq match the heel is screwed because anything ir legal. Cheating is what attracts me to heels, especially orton in 09 when he was feuding with cena, and at summerslam wit multiple restarts, its awesome. in conclusion heels should cheat, its in their nature.

The majority of the time heels should cheat to win, how else will they get heat? I wasn't on these forums at the time, but I remember when Sheamus was after winning his first WWE Championship, my friends were complaining that he never picked up a clean victory as Champ. Did they actually expect Sheamus to beat Randy Orton or John Cena, cleanly? How would that progress fueds. If Sheamus cleanly beat Cena, than the WWE's biggest face would have been beaten by Sheamus, a new guy few people liked at the time. Cena would have looked incredibly weak. There is one exception for when heels should win though. CM Punk shouldn't have to cheat to beat Yoshi Tatsu. Heels should look like the only way they can beat a big babyface is by cheating. But it just won't be believable for CM Punk to win the WWE Championship, when he can't pick up a clean win over any face.

Precisely. I remember the Monday after the Elimination Chamber PPV, Punk went over John Morrison clean. Completely the right thing to do as Punk is just the bigger deal right now.

Another example would be the clean wins Miz has over Kofi Kingston, John Morrison, and Daniel Bryan. They get there share of offense in and get the chance to look good in a high profile match, but the bigger star goes over. That's how it should be done.

But yes, when The Miz goes up against the likes of Randy Orton or John Cena, by no means should he get a clean win. Heels don't win main event matches clean, it's almost inevitable that they cheat in some way or another. I agree with Killjoy 100%, and so should everyone else.

I cannot stand it when a heel gets a clean win. It makes absolutely no sense to me. Even if they CAN win clean ... they should cheat or resort to something underhanded, because that is their nature.
I think people get hung up on getting clean wins at PPVs and then start complaining about face wins. It is a contradiction. If you want a heel on top ... expect it to be dirty. That is the way the business works.

couldn't agree more. Obviously if they're up against someone much further down the card, a clean win is vital to show their superiority but if it's a high profile match, it's much better for their character to take a cheap win/dq

Anderson and F.A.T. pretty much make the point. A heel needs to be seen as despised by the fans in both what he says and does. But, as a counterbalance we need to believe he's credible to some degree, so wins over the mid carders and such help to let us see what he's capable of and still be a credible villain, in the case of someone like the Miz. As he's very much playing a traditional bad guy, complete with flunkies to do his bidding him winning over big names by hook or by crook makes sense.
