Going for 20-0 Against Cena

The Brain

King Of The Ring
I’m putting this in the spam section even though my opening post isn’t spam. Even though I don’t usually like threads that predict matches a year in advance I’m actually going to look two years into the future. Since there’s no telling what can happen between now and then I just want to know if you think this is a good idea. You can simply say yes or no, or expand on it as much as you like. Besides there are already too many Taker/mania matches in non spam. Feel free to spam it up here.

We all know John Cena vs. The Rock has been announced for WM28. That means for the third year in a row I will not be getting the Cena vs. Undertaker match I’ve been wanting. With Taker getting older and more and more beat up I don’t know if he wants to go another two years to make this happen. If it doesn’t happen it will be the biggest missed opportunity at mania ever. Here’s my suggestion:

Since Taker was beat down so badly at WM27 I suggest he sell those injuries for a full year. This means I don’t want to see or hear from Taker at all until WM28. Let us all wonder what is going on with him. Let the road to WM28 come and go without Taker. The announcers can speculate whether he’ll return for mania, but we won’t hear from Taker himself at all. The mania card is completely announced and Taker is nowhere to be found. People begin to think WM27 really was the end of the dead man. I know you’re thinking it’s not a good idea to have one of the top draws left off the biggest show of the year, but I think Rock vs. Cena is enough to make up for Taker’s absence. The mania buys will be there anyway. Cena is the only top guy left for Taker at mania. Taking a year off might be the best thing for the streak.

We get to the main event of WM28 and the show is about to end with Cena celebrating his victory over Rock. All of a sudden the gong hits and the lights go out. We see an image of the WM29 logo and 20-0 beneath it. Taker comes out on the stage and does the throat slit motion to Cena and the show goes off the air. The two can cut a promo the following night officially offering and accepting the challenge. Then Taker can disappear again until the end of the year. This means Taker will not have been active for a year and a half and has allowed his body to fully heel from any nagging injuries. He comes back around November to shake off the ring rust and get in the flow of things so he’s ready for mania.

Along the way Taker announces win or lose WM28 will be his last match. This leads to speculation that Taker may lose. After all, no one gets to win and walk. Losing to Cena at mania would be the way to go out. The Cena haters would be terrified that after all these years Vince would choose Super Cena to end the streak. The crowd reaction would be off the charts. The hype of Cena vs. Taker is strong on its own. Factor in Taker’s return to mania after missing the year before and it being his last match and this could be an epic match. In the end I think Taker should get the win and be able to retire 20-0. In those circumstances he would be the one guy that should be able to retire with a win.

I know tl;dr for the spam section right? I know a lot can happen in two years. Injuries can happen, new stars can emerge, and old stars can fall. While avoiding the two years is too long comment (which I know people will now mention anyway) what do you think of this idea?

If this thing with Rock/Cena weren't already happening, I wouldn't mind. However, two years in a row of us already knowing who Cena will face at Mania? Not sure I like that. I'm hoping for an eventual Cena/Taker encounter at Mania. Cena is the last big threat to Taker, seeing he's already faced everyone else at Mania (minus Jericho, who isn't around).

I just thought that WM 23 was the perfect time since I think they were both at their best. If Batista could get a great match out of him, imagine what Cena could have done. I can see Cena winning four years ago but not two years down the road.

Fair point. I never really thought about Cena vs. Taker at WM23. I guess I thought the Batista match was good enough that it never really crossed my mind.

Ohhh, so this is about Cena winning and Taker losing? Cena doesn't need to win. He's as popular, right now, as he's ever going to be. The Streak is Taker's legacy.

It's not really about that. I wouldn't be surprised if Cena goes over Undertaker. I think the streak is overrated because it seems like if he loses, he has no legacy. It's like his legacy depends on the streak. He's going to be remembered no matter what. We are talking about the WWE.

Yeah, he would be remembered, no question. But The Streak is something that can be spoken of for years after his retirement. At this point, I'm no longer convinced it won't be broken, I just don't think it should be.

Batista got a good match out of the Undertaker? Pretty sure it's the other way around.

Nah. Batista was just pissed enough about being so early in the show to go out with guns blazing.

Batista vs. Taker should have been the main event. Much better then that other match.

I see LJL's point, becuase that was back when he was Super Cena, and utterly unbeatable. Now, it wouldnt have NEAR the intrigue, although the fact that its pretty likely he retires after this one makes a lot of it come back.

and yea, I said right after the show last sunday "next year against Cena" seemed the logical progression. Well, not now. Hopefully not against Triple H again though.

I have to say this is a great idea but dont fink it'll happen. Taker should never lose at Wrestlemania, its made what Taker is today. But regarding a Taker v Cena match i don't think it'll happen at mania 29, i think it'll happen at this years SummerSlam.

Ever since about Wrestlemania 25, I have been practically begging wwe to do this match because I just know the hype surrounding this match would be huge as Cena is really the only guy left to pose some kind of legitimate threat to Takers streak. I didn't mind Taker and Batista and 23, I remember a lot of buzz back then and quite a bit of talk between people and this match,I remember they were far more interested in this match up and one against Cena. I am pretty satisfied with Rock and Cena for next year. If they couldn't have done this then they would be crazy not to book Taker/Cena

I don't think it really matters when it would of happened. The hype would still be of the chart if it happened today or 4 years ago. If anything it would be a bit bigger right now because Cena has really established and cemented himself as WWE's top guy and to a lot of kiddies, they probably consider this to be a dream match. So it kind of makes sense to do it soon while Cenas at the hight of his kid popularity. I still want this match to happen,if Taker needs to skip next years mania then so be it. Cena would be the perfect opponent for Taker to go 20-0.

I think at this Mania you could clearly see how old he's gotten, even compared to the year before. And to be honest, I'm a bit tired of Taker being absent for 80% of the year and then sneaking in for a token victory. Next year should be his last, and 20-0 should be the end. I know you said he wouldn't fight next year, but time is really running up and I don't see a reason to drag it any further. Taker - Cena is really THE match I'd love to see, but that opportunity went by I think. Rock vs. Cena should've happened this year, along with Miz - Morrison in my opinion. I think next year should be Kane - Taker to finally close the circle and they should throw everything out to make it a big deal and add fresh recipes to it. It should be career vs. career and Taker should win by... I don't know, something special, but not after 23 Tombstone-kickouts. Taker should be retired the PPV after by a young guy.
