Former WWE Diva and WWE Hall of Famer Sunny had some unflattering comments in regards to Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch on Facebook last night including:
"ok.......who else thinks the 2 new red/purple/orange heads in the diva divisions are buttafaces??? and charlotte (Ashley) really has in ring talent??? "ive never been a fan of womens wrestling.. leave it to the men.. and my opinion of how someone looks is my opinion... as if no one has ever judged me??" She did comment positively, however, on Lana by saying"on the other hand, i ADORE Lana."
Generally speaking, I'm of the opinion that Sunny is basically the prototype for the generally negative ways in which women have been portrayed in WWE since the 90s. First and foremost, Sunny was drop dead gorgeous and sexy, but her comments are basically an insult to actual women's wrestlers not just in WWE, but everywhere when you get right down to it. Sinny seems perfectly content with the notion that the primary use of women in wrestling is to ultimately be pretty and look alluring in skimpy/skin tight clothing. In a nutshell, Sunny prefers that women wrestlers conduct themselves the way women in society as a whole were expected to 60 years ago: look pretty while letting the man do the work.
As far as her comments on people judging her, it's obvious that people are going to judge her to one degree or another. If you want to be a celebrity, it's something you have to be prepared for. In Sunny's case, there's just not a whole helluva lot about her time in wrestling that strikes as something to be particularly proud about: she's basically been accused of screwing half the WWE locker room while she was there, she's had issues with drugs & various other legal problems over the course of her career and there've been rumors of her signing a six figure deal with the adult film company Vivid.
I guess what bothers me personally about this is that Sunny is exactly the antithesis of someone that I personally want to see do well in pro wrestling. In her day, it was all about looking hot and generally behaving as ****ty as allowable whereas female wrestlers and members of management in WWE want to change the image of the Divas in WWE as being more than just hot babes who're there to serve as irrelevant filler. When you look back over Sunny's career in WWE, at least in my opinion, she always struck me as someone who I thought was more suited to dancing around a pole or gyrating in some guy's lap while getting dollar bills slipped into her G-string.
