Elite Eight Regional Rounds

IrishCanadian25

Going on 10 years with WrestleZone
Each region is now down to 8 bands each, which means only 32 bands remain in the tournament, down from 360+. Less than one tenth. These are truly the elite of all time rock music.

We will begin today (Monday) with the 90's / 00's region's Elite Eight matches, and a new round will be posted each day - 80's on Tuesday, 70's on Wednesday, and 50's / 60's on Thursday.

90's / 00's Region Elite Eight Matches
#17 Foo Fighters vs #8 Stone Temple Pilots
#4 Green Day vs #5 The Offspring
#2 Pearl Jam vs #7 Red Hot Chili Peppers
#3 Alice in Chains vs #38 Weezer

I am shocked that Weezer has made it all the way through to the elite eight in a very tough region. Oddly enough, I am even more shocked that they ended the run of the 54th seed, Dream Theatre, last round. Weezer and Foo Fighters are the only non top-8 seeds to make it this far in this region.

80's Region Elite Eight Matches
#1 Metallica vs #8 R.E.M.
#4 U2 vs #37 Bruce Springsteen
#2 Guns and Roses vs #7 Ozzy Osbourne (solo)
#3 Bon Jovi vs #6 Sting vs #54 The Beastie Boys

For whatever reason, the Beastie Boys refuse to die, clinging to a tie with Sting and advancing to a triple threat match with the aforementioned former Police frontman and New Jersey's own Bon Jovi. In a further twist of the knife in my side, Bruce Springsteen remains alive, taking out another one of my personal favorite bands - Queensryche - in the sweet 16.

70's Region Elite Eight Matches
#1 Pink Floyd vs #9 Judas Priest
#4 Van Halen w/ Roth vs #12 Lynard Skynard
#2 Queen vs #7 Black Sabbath
#3 Aerosmith vs #6 Journey

Steven Perry just won't stop believin' in his band, Journey, as they advance to the elite 8 and justify that their seed, which some called generous, was more than a fluke. This region, in stark contrast to the 80's and 90's, has no major upsets, with only Priest (who knocked off Meatloaf) and Skynard (who bested The Ramones) outside the top 8 seeds, though VERY close still. The most interesting match here is probably Freddie Mercury and co. taking on metal gods in Ozzy and Sabbath. As a side note, with The Police eliminated (though Sting remains alive), both Phil Collins and Genesis ousted, and Clapton and Cream going home early, Ozzy Osbourne is the ONLY remaining participant who is in the tournament both as a solo artist AND in a band.

50's / 60's Region Elite Eight Matches
#1 The Beatles vs the winner of #9 CCR vs #25 Van Morrison
#4 The Doors vs #5 The Who
#2 The Rolling Stones vs the winner of #7 Jimi Hendrix and #10 Cream
#3 Led Zeppelin vs #6 Elvis Presley

Holy hell. At the time of posting, the CCR/Morrison and Hendrix/Cream matches were both too close to call as of yet. Both could go either way on the final day of voting, and both could even end in ties. In the case of CCR/Morrison, it's unlikely either band is being set up for much more than a quick match against the Beatles, whereas Hendrix could give the Stones a run for their money. The 4 vs 5 match-up between The Doors and The Who may be the most evenly matched and intreguing battle thus far in the tournament.
