Dow Jones Industrial Average Hits All Time High

Business is thriving in spite of President Obamadinejad. Just think how high it would be without him in power.

Oh I am. That line never ceases to amuse me.

Can anyone clear up to a non-american and non-economist what this means? Rep for succinctity, if anyone cares about rep.

The Dow Jones is a small collection (index) of stocks. The stocks are generally from companies that are large in size and well established. I think they are all American companies. It is supposed to be a strong reflection of the US economy (depends on who you ask though). As people purchase each stock their value generally goes up. Each price of each stock in the Dow Jones that goes up or down is reflected in the Dow Jones Index. Occassionally certain individual stocks are added or removed to reflect their growth or decline.

GOP is an acronym for Grand Old Party, aka Republicans.

The market overreacted in 2008 and 2009. The US economy is not great but it is a lot healthier and a safer bet than other (Europe). Cash is cheap right now (you can borrow at a low interest rate) and it makes sense to a lot of people to gamble it on the US economy.

Hopefully this is not one of these bubbles that is going to burst and come crashing down and put us in 2008 again.

Is this helpful?

But this President HATES business and is killing it every day.

Right GOP?
I saw someone comment on Slashdot today about how every time his/her friend saw someone blame Obama for something ridiculous, his/her friend praised Obama for something equally ridiculous. "Having beautiful weather? Thanks Obama! Finding five dollars in a jacket you haven't worn for months? Thank goodness Obama is President! Getting engaged? We might never have met if it wasn't for Obama!"

I plan to start doing the same thing.

This IS helpful. I'll rep you when the man lets me again. Definitely succinct.
The thing I was most surprised to learn here was that GOP acronym. From being a teenager and listening to Alt-Rock I had come to assume the Dow Jones was some mustacheo'd man who sold guns.

I'm ok with the basic working of the stock exchange, but the Dow itself and what it symbolised was where I came up short.

As always, George Shernard Baw, you're the only man I'll let anywhere near me with a sheep shearer.

Since when does the DOW only react to the president and is the sole economic factor?

Meanwhile our unemployment edged up 0.1% in January from the previous month and our economy only moved 0.1% north in the 4th quarter of 2012. This one thing is hardly anything to jump for joy about and give Obama a hug.

Maybe, but White Collar is on tonight. Thank you, President Obama, for saving cable television.
