ManU were desperate, sure. But Lpool did get a good set of money from the Suarez sale and could have gone out and 'overspent' on someone of real quality. I'm surprised they never tried for Isco or even Reus, who could be going cheap in the next TW, and could have been got for less than 40mil(which would be a steal). Just read that Lpool are after Reus again now, and he has demanded 180k wages.
I mentioned Arsenal, because they spent big for Sanchez whilst Wellbeck also cost around the same as Balo, and he could be called a "panic buy" as I am sure he wasn't anywhere near first choice.
As for Alonso, did Lpool even really try to get him? I'd think the Lpool connection counts for him. However, even a move for Masche could have gone through I feel.
I think money talks more than anything in today's world of football. Prestige means a lot less(something which Lpool has), but they should have pursued someone of a higher calibre than a Balotelli, and trust me, there were quite a few guys available this summer.

I don't think Man U would sell Welbeck to Liverpool and he was not really highly regarded as a goalscorer. I don't think you realize how far Liverpool has fallen down on the prestige level in recent years. They still have the fanbase but among players they are not really a high priority compared to the top tier clubs.

Fair enough. I see your points, but as a guy who follows Pool closely, I think they messed up big time during the summer, and it is and will cost them during the season.
Tbh, I'd wonder if an early UCL exit could help them in their quest to get back into the UCL next year. I don't think they have the right balance and quality to fight on both fronts.
Essentially, Gerrard is now back to being Main Inspiration and whilst he is still class as a player, he is not the type of player you'd want to be your main driving force if you want to build on after a season of nearly winning the League.
Reus is back now, and would have been worth it since he is essentially in the final year of his contract for Dortmund. As for Isco, he was just a suggestion of a player who would be much more useful than Balotelli.
Indeed, they aren't as big as before....but I'd think the added incentive of a UCL campaign, some money and the fact they challenged for the title would still get someone of a high quality to come in.
Ultimately, I feel the quest for quantity(depth) in cheap amounts as opposed to replacing their best player with someone of high quality will cost them, as that is a mistake a team looking to make it to the top shouldn't be making.
They sure did. But sometimes it is up to the players and agents more than the clubs. Could Liverpool really fight for the likes of Di Maria against United? I think it speaks volume that the likes of Di Maria and Falcao chose to play for United this season without UCL than Liverpool.
I think Dortmund is in the same situation as Liverpool (maybe even worse off if you see their league form this season). They can attract 2nd tier talents but once they become good the elite clubs will poach them away.
One thing going for EPL clubs is they are flushed with cash. When the likes of QPR/Hull can outbid Juventus this season it speaks volume. The thing with replacing Suarez is there was nobody in the market of the same quality. Liverpool chose to invest in the future/gamble on potential with the likes of Markovic and Can.

Sanchez is my captain and allows me to make 'alexisonfire' references so I like him better than Ozil but to believe that Ozil is some kind of shit merchant is ridiculous.
With the exception of Sturridge and maybe Coutinho and Allen, most of Rodgers' buys have been utter shite.
That being said, how could Rickie Lambert possibly be any worse than Mario Balotelli. I'm literally not joking, I could mope around in a Liverpool shirt, out of position and then spoon it wide.
