For what it's worth i started following them in 2003, hardly an exciting time.
And if you hold that opinion about what makes a "real" fan then i don't think this forum is for you seeing as we have 5-6 Irish people here who support English teams, a Gillingham fan who supports Totenham and a Liverpool fan who used to have a Fulham season ticket.

You can be a true fan if you support no particular team. But you can't experience football in the same way as most if you've made the decision to support one of the top teams.

I get plenty of that experience at home as my local County team in Gaelic football are ranked about 31 out of the 34 teams that take part. Same with Rugy supporting connacht and those are two sports i have more interest in then football.

Attempts at gaining a Champions League place can't compare with the genuine fear of relegation, getting in or just missing out of the play-offs, promotion to a higher league, defeating a team considerably better than you in the cup or league etc. You miss out on so much if you decide to pick a team based on their standing.

Thats why I support Gillingham, geniune elation last year combined with bowel knotting terror this year. I am fond of Spurs because everyone round here supports Arsenal, but its worth noting they were pig shit when I started cheering them and offer similar highs and lows. Yay 4th! Ah FUCK you Chelsea!

I do love it when the local Man United and Liverpool fans go at it, not a Manc or Scouse accent to be heard, does make me wonder why they're so fierce, but hey, its the nature of the beast.

Pathetic or completely logical?

When I was growing up, Liverpool were on the television far more than any one else and winning things. Why would my 6 year old self not choose to support them?

Having said that, while I support Liverpool, I would not count myself as any sort of fanatic. I don't hate Everton and am not completely blinkered to their standard, drawbacks etc. For me, that makes me a 'better' fan and for the most part far more knowledgeable than any diehard.
