What's worse then James McLean getting death threats for deciding to play for the republic of Ireland? Responding with this tweet

Love the dogs abuse am gettin of shock N.I fans, just worry about watchin ur own country at the euros... oh wait #mybad #awkward haha.

Brilliant.

Edit: Captain I agree 100% I saw that and thought for fuck sake. What a cunt.

I wonder what the player has to say about that?:

An erroneous story has been circulated this evening by Steve Goodman, regarding Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse and Real Madrid, is taken from a recent interview Papiss conducted with L’Equipe.

In the article, Mr Goodman states that Papiss has issued a “come and get me” appeal to Real Madrid. This statement is utterly untrue.

In the interview with L’Equipe, Papiss responded to a question about Real Madrid to say that he has admired the club since he was young. This in no way constitutes a ‘come and get me’ plea.

Mr Goodman further claims that Papiss ‘insisted he hopes to join them [Real Madrid]‘. Papiss has never made such a statement and refutes the suggestion in the strongest possible terms.

The player is completely committed to Newcastle United and is not interested in anything other than ensuring he and the team finish the season as strongly as possible.

The matter is now in the hands of the player’s legal representatives.

The whole idea of someone from Northern Ireland being able to play for the Republic of Ireland or to get an Irish passport for that matter without having any familial or residential links is just wrong.

I cannot speak for James McLean's situation (although the fact that FIFA signed off on his choice of the ROI suggests that he does have the familial link) but I know plenty of people who claim Irish citizenship despite having no legal right to it - parents or grandparents were not born there and nor were they born there or are they resident in that country.

It would be like someone who lives in Israel asking for Turkish citizenship because the Turks used to rule Israel a century ago.

If they've Turkish family then there's nothing wrong with that. Half my family is American, I'm well within my rights to persue that side.

Yeah, but what I am saying is that there are plenty of people who have no links to the Republic of Ireland, familial or residential, but still get Irish passports or represent the Republic of Ireland in a sport.

Tony Cascarino, one of the most capped players ever to play for the ROI, has admitted in his autobiography that he never actually qualified to play for them!

Isn't it a Good Friday agreement thing that anyone born in Northern Ireland can be an Irish citizen?

Yeah essentially it gives them the choice of whether they want to be considered Irish or British. I think Darron Gibson and Shane Duffy exploited that rule aswell.

Yeah it's become a bit of a joke over here with people often saying something is "about as Irish as Tony Cascarino!"

Yes, it is. However, for my money, once the Irish government gave up it's claim on the six counties of Northern Ireland, the idea that someone who has no familial link to the Republic can still be an Irish citizen should have been removed.

Incidentally, I would qualify to represent the Republic through my maternal grandfather anyway.

Blackpool for the win in the play-off final? Would much rather see them back in the Premiership next season and hopefully see them figure out how to defend a bit too.

So, for our MUST-WIN relegation decider this weekend, Bolton are now without David Wheater at CB for at least 9 months :(

Seriously, what shit luck we have had with injuries this season!

Now, Coyle must choose between either Zat Knight or Dedryk Boyata to play alongside Tim Ream... that really like choosing between getting bummed by either Didier Drogba or Papa Bouba Diop....you are going to get fucked up either way :(

15 years to the day Newcastle beat Forest 5-0. Whilst I had seen Newcastle beat Man U 5-0 and various things throught the years i was this result that made me love football. Here's the story taken from nufc.com:

Fifteen years ago today, Newcastle went into the final day of the season needing an unlikely set of results to qualify for the Champions League. And it happened.

United needed to beat already relegated Nottingham Forest at St. James' Park and then hope that Liverpool (remember them) and Arsenal would falter, leaving us to claim second place with only two teams eligible in those days.

There was also the added interest of the mackems and smoggies also in relegation bother but that was just hoping for far too much on one day....

Before kick-off the table looked like this:

Pos Team Played GD Pts
1 Manchester United 37 30 72
2 Liverpool 37 25 67
3 Newcastle 37 28 65
4 Arsenal 37 28 65

16 Southampton 37 -5 41
17 mackems 37 -17 40
18 smoggies 37 -9 38
19 Coventry 37 -17 38
20 Nottingham Forest 37 -23 34

Liverpool were at Hillsborough while Arsenal were at the Baseball Ground with Sheffield Wednesday and Derby both in the top half of the table.

The relegation fight saw the mackems travelling to Wimbledon (at Selhurst Park) while the smoggies were at Leeds and Coventry had a mountain to climb at White Hart Lane.

On a glorious day at St. James' Park, Newcastle went goal crazy and were four up inside 36 minutes thanks to Asprilla, Ferdinand(2) and Shearer - what a forward line!

Elsewhere, Liverpool were goalless and Arsenal were losing, while at the bottom Coventry had taken a shock two-goal lead but Spurs had got one back before the break. The mackems and smoggies were both goalless at the interval.

The table at half-time:

Pos Team Played GD Pts
1 Manchester United 38 31 75
2 Newcastle 38 32 68
3 Liverpool 38 25 68
4 Arsenal 38 27 65

16 Southampton 38 -6 41
17 Coventry 37 -16 41
18 mackems 38 -17 41
19 smoggies 38 -9 39
20 Nottingham Forest 37 -27 34

It couldn't stay like that surely...?

Robbie Elliott scored another for us to make it 5-0 and although Arsenal had taken the lead at Derby, they weren't going to match our big win.

Liverpool had gone behind at Hillsborough but Jamie Redknapp equalised with eight minutes to go and with Coventry hanging on at 2-1, Leeds took the lead at Elland Road but 'Boro equalised two minutes later. The mackems were still 0-0 at Wimbledon.

Liverpool seemed certain to get a late goal to dash our Champions League hopes but Wednesday held out and we'd done it! Then Wimbledon scored late on and 'Boro had only drawn and were already down.

All eyes were on White Hart Lane and Selhurst Park and when the whistles were eventually blown at both, Gordon Strachan's Coventry had survived while our near neighbours had both been relegated ('Boro hilariously falling because of a three point deduction).

Final league table:

Pos Team Played GD Pts
1 Manchester United 38 32 75
2 Newcastle 38 33 68
3 Arsenal 38 30 68
4 Liverpool 38 25 68

16 Southampton 38 -6 41
17 Coventry 37 -16 41
18 mackems 38 -18 40
19 smoggies 38 -9 39
20 Nottingham Forest 37 -28 34

Days like that don't come round very often. Only every 15 years, hopefully....

I'll always take the 5-0 over Man U, that was glorious. There was also a small bonus in Man U losing to Southampton the following week and Denmark losing 6 or 7-0 to Brazil midweek. Schmeichel having conceded 17/18 in 3 games.

The Man U 5-0 made me realised I loved the Toon (that's a lie, it was the day we were promoted in 93) but it was that day that made me realise how much I loved football as a whole.

That day of promotion was actually the day I started supporting Newcastle (being a London boy I'd been a Spurs fan until I was 11) I believe we beat Birmingham 7-1 and the game was shown on tv.

Strange, Wikipedia says i'm wrong. Maybe it was Leicester, team in blue anyway.

It was Leicester last game of the season (7-1) but promotion was secured against Grimsby. My Dad was the token "fat bloke with top off and tats" in the crowd.

Fergie reminded me of what happened on this day 29 years ago. Typically, the weather looks pretty much the same today as it did then.

Aberdeen beat Real Madrid(!) 2-1 in Gothenburg to win the European Cup.

Apparently the new liverpool shirt is offensive to the Hillsbrough dead.

Good fucking grief media. Good fucking grief.

I thought they had a semi-valid point:

The new shirt sees the club's logo, which featured an image of the Shankly Gates, replaced by the original Liver Bird crest that became synonymous with Liverpool's success in the 1970s and 80s. As a result the two Justice flames honouring the Hillsborough campaign

But then I read on:

have been moved to the back of the shirt.

Much ado about nothing.
