The answer isYes.
For the time being, CM Punk has the attention of all wrestling fans, but how long will it last?
Firstly, I want to say that last nights PPV was awesome. I didn't enjoy everything, but I never enjoy everything on a PPV/show, just because I don't care about some of the outcomes and I'm not a "wrestling connoisseur" as many in the IWC appear to be. The point being - the whole card could of been shit with bad matchups, botches, you name it and I still would of enjoyed the PPV because of the main event. The PPV wasn't bad at all though, it was an awesome PPV, but I was tuning in to see Punk. And in the end, I wasn't disappointed. Now if it had been a great match and Punk lost, I would of been disappointed because the guy I'm emotionally invested in would of lost to a character I despise and would be leaving the company.
See I don't rate wrestling by how aesthetically pleasing a match looks. If a match does come off looking good, it's a bonus. If Evan Bourne does a back flip off a ladder, it's an exciting part of the show, but more exciting for some then others. To me, it was just a spot, an impressive spot, but still a spot from a guy I'm pretty indifferent towards. If Bourne would of won MITB I would of been like
Because it would of put another guy I couldn't careless about in the main event scene.
As for the main event, I was at the edge of my seat hoping Punk could pull out the win, if he had tapped, I would of had a bitch fit. I haven't been so invested in a wrestling match in a long time and the match had the same feel as when I watched Silva vs Sonnen, though I was at the edge of my seat that entire fight. I was also interested in what the crowd was saying during the match. The boo when Cena's music hit was great. Is there any chance WWE pipes in the "Let's Go Cena" chants?
Anyway, the reason the match was so good was because it was a high stakes match. Could Punk win the title with his contract set to expire and John Cena's career on the line? That's what made the match so special. The build to the match, the backstory, the implications. Then the match was assisted by the reception and energy of the crowd.
I've never been the type to criticize John Cena's wrestling ability. To me, if you know the basic moves and your in the ring with another professional, you can put on a good wrestling match. It might not be stiff, bloody, smooth, flashy, and any of that other stuff the purists are looking for, but it doesn't need to be for the main stream. And if you do get some of that, it's a bonus. If you can get the crowd into the match, that's most of the battle. The crowd was into the match before either guy stepped into the ring and that's because of everything done before the match.
Now what John Cena did well in this match and the build to it, was portray himself as a heel. What heel has ever gotten heat like Cena got last night? Now I'm not saying that's the way it's meant to be, but that's just how it is. Cena has been focused on and in the spotlight for far to long. There is nothing he can do to sway people from disliking his position and character. He's resented now. Last night the commentators said that CM Punk had the crowd brain washed, but it was the other way around. The crowd is usually Cena fans (brain washed) and "those that see through bullshit," but last night, more people were seeing through the bullshit then usual.
I don't believe in Cena. That's what it comes down to. I will give him credit though for playing the role of heel innovatively and successfully. And he will continue to play this role as now he is going to have to "overcome the odds" of losing his title and perhaps losing his job?
When he writes his book it should be entitled "John Cena: The Heel That Fooled Everybody And Overcame The Odds." Why else do you think he says "You can't see me?" It's because you can't(if your a fan.) He's putting on a front, like a wolf in sheeps clothing. He's a con artist. Which is what makes him one of the best heels ever. What other heel is known for brain washing children?
But back to Punk. Don't get confused, this is not the age of Punk. This is still the Cena era and he will eventually get his spinner belt back. He is set to feud Del Rio soon and The Rock in April, but it was nice of the WWE to do what they did last night. The heel got his comeuppance.
I look forward to Raw tonight and the coming weeks, hoping Punk doesn't get screwed but knowing it will happen and Cena will come out looking the better.
My only hope is that Cena is no longer involved in the Punk storyline. If the storyline becomes Vince(whoever else) vs Punk then I will be happy. I don't want to see Del Rio win the title, only to feud with Cena over it. Last night was the highest of highs, now all there is to expect is the lowest of lows.
For now, we stand in the sky; faith rewarded.
