Crossovers: Time For A Change

Life's A Bitch, And Then You Mosh
:glare: My other "Crossovers" threads aren't getting a lot of love right now, but I'm going to give it another try. I'd like to know what artist you think made the best change in styles. Was it Jessica Simpson "pop"ping her bubble and going country? Or, was it Robert Plant going soft for a country duet? Maybe it was Mike Shinoda going from emo back-up singer to full-fledged rapper. I want to know.

My favorite style-switch of all-time would have to be Slash stretching out from his rock roots. Once Guns 'N' Roses split, he went on to do collaborations with Michael Jackson, Blackstreet, and Sammy Hagar. Yes, Hagar is rock, but a much different style than GNR. Although he was never a "lead" man in a band, he showed that he had the talent to do anything.

I don't no if this would be a complete change or not, but Kanye West's recent "change" from rapper to auto-tuned singer was great. While he didn't switch genres(both are hip/hop)his style did change.

While I love rapper Kanye, and am usually against auto-tune(see T-Pain/Lil Wayne/ect)but I think it actually really worked out for Kanye. While it was a little risking for him to not rap, and actually "sing" but it was a good choice. His "auto-tuned" album "808's & Heartbreak" debut at #1 and has since sold 1.5 million copies. Plus two of his singles "Love Lockdown" and "Heartless" hit #3, & #2 on the BBHot 100 chart.

So while it's still hip/hop, and he didn't turn to far away from his roots, I think Kanye's risky move experimenting with auto tuned, ended up with great results.

Jessica Simpson did a good job imo and her country is better then her pop. Her voice is more fit for country music seeing how she is a country girl anyway. One I don't really like now is Miley. Her pop is decent I'm not a fan but her country music is just meh. I mean she tied singing Fifteen with Taylor Swift at the Grammy's and I swear Taylor should had just done it on her own. Miley should stick to pop.

I totally agree with you about Jessica. Although she's flopping now anyways regardless if she's pop or country, I think Jessica makes a better country singer than pop. Her voice always had a hint of country, and I think it's better suited for the genre. Jessica as a pop singer never really worked out. She was always outshine by Britney, Christina, ect, and her material was weak and she just didn't seem confortable.

Now as country she is getting outshine by Kellie, Carrie, and Taylor but at least it seems "real". Plus her country album was actually very good. Her best album todate imo. Songs like Remember that sound honest, and are actually really great.

I sorta disagree with you about Miley though. I think if she would have started off as country she could have been successful. Her voice sounds alot more country, than it does pop. Even with her pop songs like 7 Things, she sounds country. Her new song "The Climb" is getting country play and was made into a country remix and I think it's better as a country version. She also had a top 10 country hit with her dad. I think she would be better suited as a country artist, but I doubt she will be successful as a country artist.

Ah yes, I'm gonna use a crossover so good it makes A.I.'s look pathetic. Alright, weak joke aside, I gotta go with Ice T crossing over to the metal genre with Body Count. The original O.G. himself Ice T was one of the innovators of gangsta rap, so really you couldn't even imagine him fronting a metal band. But he did, and honestly Body Count is a damn good group if you ask me. Ice T really brought a different style to metal, but didn't just go up there and rap over heavy guitar riffs like say Fred Durst or Zack de la Rocha. Though Body Count really never made it huge, except for the whole Cop Killa song controversy (which of course help create the whole Parental Advisory stickers), I say that they have been moderately successful and I think it was because of Ice T making that transition from rap to metal.

Ice T wasn't afraid to try new shit, and Body Count was definitely one of those risks that paid off in the end for him. I just find it hilarious that he once made a song called Cop Killa and now acts as a cop on TV. That my friends, is flexibility.

I don't care if people agree with me but Kid Rocks cross over to well, everything has been good. I mean he sounds good no matter what kind of music he is making in my opinion.

Well I guess it was just that song then. Cause at the Grammy's I swear I wanted to just mute Miley. I mean it seemed to me she tried to outshine Taylor...I've not heard of Climb song and really probably won't look it up but will watch it if I happen to see it on CMT while I got it over there.

I have to agree. I don't know why I didn't think of him. Kid Rock is really good and can pretty much do anything. He has made it in the rap world, rock world, and country world. So he is like a crossover crossover lol...

But yeah I mean last year you could turn on a rock station on the radio and hear All Summer Long. Turn it to a country station and still hear All Summer Long.
