Crossovers: Unusual Duets

Life's A Bitch, And Then You Mosh
While typing up my other Crossovers thread, I mentioned Robert Plant making the switch to country for a single record that was so highly touted it demanded a world tour. It got me to thinking of all the other crazy duets we've seen over the years. From Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow, to Eminem and Elton John, to Ozzy, and you guessed it, Miss Piggy. What is your favorite, and why?

Just as I'm a sucker for a good cover song, I'm also a sucker for people crossing genres and trying something new. One "unusual duet" that caught my ear was Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire. I've always been a fan of Clarkson's, but when she took her album and added in one of country music's most well-known voices, it really changed the mood of a lot of her songs.

I was also a big fan of the U2 and Green Day collaboration, even if it did only last for one song. The song was perfect for what had happened in New Orleans, and the crowd reaction when the Saints returned home to that song was outrageous.

I love duets most of the times. Some unusel ones are often seen on CMT Crossroads. They had Kelly Clarkson and Reba like you menioted both also have had Taylor Swift and Def Leppard(which was awesome). I loved this performce as both have great songs and they did each other songs. It was cool to get to see Taylor sing Pour Some Suger On Me with Def Leppard. But was just as cool to see Def Leppard perform Love Story with Taylor Swift. It comes on alot on TV well not alot but every so often you should check it out if you ever get the chance.

My Chemical Romance/The Used - Under Pressure

Originally by Queen and David Bowie I'm pretty sure it was. They covered this song to raise money for charity and it's a really good song, it's in no way 'emo' or anything just a really good duet cover of a classic song although it was this song that led to the ending of the friendship between the band. You can find it on YouTube or on the album In Love and Death as a bonus track at the end of the album. A good job done by both bands. The singing is great, the guitars and drums are great too.

Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Phil Collins - Home

I gotta say this has to be the most interesting duet I have ever seen. Great song overall, it was a remake of Phil Collins' version of Take Me Home and featured Bone Thugs doing the lyrics and Phil Collins doing the chorus. What's interesting to note is that in the US it was criticized to no end but yet in the UK it received so much positive reception that it led to Bone Thugs naming Collins an honorary member of the group and called him Chrome Bone. Seriously, I can't make that up even if I tried.

The song included my favorite rap group and I enjoy most of Phil Collins' work, so this was an excellent combination in my book. The song itself had a feel good vibe to it, which broke away from the feel of the original song which had a more somber tone to it.

Well they never recorded the song for an album, nor did they release it as a single, but my favorite unsual duet would have to be Beyonce & Sugarland's duet at the 2007 American Music Awards of "Irreplaceable". I am a huge Beyonce fan, and I love Sugarland so this was a duet made in heaven for me.

Irreplaceable it's self, sorta has a country vibe to it(the acoustic guitar)so it made sence to have Jennifer Nettles(Lead vocalist of Sugarland)sing it. So it started with just Sugarland singing it, then half way through Beyonce came on stage. Although it was obvious Beyonce could sing circles around Nettles(she can basically out sing anyone)I thought their voices meshed well and I loved it. Although critics were mixed about the performance, it was definitley a hit for me!

i really enjoyed Eminem with Dido in Stan. it was something different. you had hard edge Eminem mixing it up with the soft sound of Dido. it made for a very interesting song. the video was really good too, not something you'd expect.

i was also very suprised when Em mixed it up with Elton John on Stan too. it was something that everyone wasnt expecting since Em was seen as a gay basher. very nice touch to that performance.

another duet that i found most intriguing was Freddy Mercury and the opera singer Montserrat Caballe in Barcelona. Freddy was totally amazing. Bringing in a rock superstar with a opera mega star, the album was absouletly wonderful.

In my capacity as uncle, yesterday I had to watch Nick Jr. with the children. One of the programmes featured the Wiggles dueting with Kylie Minogue. They were singing something about a monkey and it was very strange to say the least.

Beyonce's duet with the girl who won the X-Factor served only to prove why nobody who wins the X-Factor really makes i that far and that Beyonce is a hell of a lot better than I realised.

Perhaps my favourite duet, but also a bit unusual is Lauryn Hill the rapper with Lauryn Hill the singer on "Doo Wop (That Thing)", obviously it is a duet of styles rather than people, making it unusual, and it is on one of the best albums of all time.

Eminem & Elton John on the live edition of Stan- Not many people saw that one coming as many critics thought of Eminem as a homophobic bastard. Both these two really did well on the song together.

Nelly & Tim McGraw on Over & Over Again- I thought this was an unlikely duet as it was non existant that a rappers(or in Nelly's case a whack rapper) colaborated with Country songs but it proved to be a successful hit & the song also proved to be one of the only songs that I can even tolerate Nelly.
