Could Rey Mysterio be World Heavyweight Champion One More Time?

Nate DaMac

Fuck erbody but me
I know this will end up as another Rey hate thread, since the IWC hates all performers with talent and are over, but I really don't see why not. He is over with the crowd(which may be an understatement) and is efficent in the ring. Two qualities that I think are important in being a champion. Don't give me that bullshit about being too small. That argument went out the window with the Jeff/Punk program. So what do you think, and use your brain for fucks sake.

I believe he can be. Punk is of relatively small stature and he is doing fine with himself. Mysterio has shown he can hang with the Punk's, Hardy's and Jericho's. It's good that he is on Smackdown because if he was on RAW, he would have a less of a chance although it would be good to see him go against Randy Orton again and John Cena. He is over with the crowd and I don't believe nobody else in 2009 has had better matches than Mysterio. If Punk wins at Summerslam, I would love to see him and Rey feud if Rey drops the title to Ziggler. Morrison may get a first crack at it though. Mysterio as champion wouldn't hurt for a few months and hopefully it will try to erase the stain from his first world title reign.

Rey Mysterio is certainly in line for another top tier championship. Looking on the current state of formidable top tier championship contenders, Rey Rey is in that list without a doubt. However, it must not be another WHC. Only reason being that he is not anywhere near a Heavyweight at all. It might be best if they give him a title run with the WWE championship, since he is a favourite of the kids & would suit having the toy-type title. If he was contending for the WWE title, I would not care how many times he competed for it or held the championship. He is a great wrestler whom I enjoy from his lucha libre skills.

Rey Rey with the WHC = no no
Rey Rey with the WWE title = why not?

The problem is not being too small.Size was an important thing in 80's all the big stars had huge sizes but in today's wrestling size doesn't matter anymore.See Jericho,Hbk,Guerrero,Cm Punk. They all proved us they can be good champions. The problem with Mysterio is his gimmick.Underdog gimmick has never worked for top stars. That's why Mysterio and Cm Punk's first reign were considered as shit. They were booked like underdogs and it lowered down the prestige of the title because the gimmick made the title look like holding someone who is not good enough to hold it but always find a way to keep it on his waist. If Mysterio dominates the whole match and gets the win no one can eat it up and it make his opponents look weak.If he was heel it would maybe work but he cannot be a heel because he is highly over and has too many flashy moves that crowd cheers for. That's why he can't make a good world champion but a good contender for the title.

Could Rey be a heavyweight champion again? Well, as laughable as many find the concept of stringing the word "heavyweight" with Mysterio, I think it could definitely happen. Yes, Rey is an underdog and has pretty much always been a face. Both of these things, believe it or not, are a disadvantage for any champion. Let's face it, heels tend to make more dominant and longer running champions because they're willing to fight dirtier and cheat more often to retain. The WWE also likes to build up annoyance with these guys more as well so that they can keep people watching just to hope the title is taken away from the heels.

However, if this were done right, Rey could make the "hero's journey" once again to the top and capture another heavyweight title, although I don't think it should be the WHC. The WWE kind of bollixed that title run the first time. Not the journey to it, which was great, but once he got it...then they treated him like the usual underdog face and had him get kicked around except his most important matches. Even then, it didn't last.

I say they need to bring back the "giant-killer" thing again and actually make him effective at doing this bit again. Either that, or have him form a stable. Keep him a face, but give him some actual dominance. Get that together, I think he'd be a prime guy for a WWE Heavyweight Title run.

The main reason I suggested the WHC title was because it's on Smackdown along with Rey. I think people look at the Heavyweight thing too much. It is just a name. Hell, would Jeff Hardy be considered a Heavyweight? He has held the Light Heavyweight Championship in the past. I just don't buy that as a legit reason to keep it off him. Also, don't give me this shit of lowered prestigue. I've said it a million times, there is nothing prestigous about a championship belt whose holder is decided by a predetermined outcome. Wrestling belts are not, will not be, and have never been prestigous.

I've been wondering that same question ever since Rey Mysterio lost the World Heavyweight Championship at Great American Bash 2006. I mean, I've watched Rey Mysterio very closely ever since I started watching wrestling. Up until 2006, in WWE, Rey Mysterio was only given the Cruiserweight Championship and the WWE Tag Team Championship. He's competed for the WWE Championship and the United States Championship several times in the past, but always lost, and it give me the feeling that those were the only titles WWE would allow him to hold, because of his size.

Up until Wrestlemania 22, I thought that to be the World Heavyweight Champion, you had to be over the cut-off of a cruiserweight. Which I believe was about 215 pounds. Rey Mysterio is about 40 lbs. under that. When he won it, I thought to myself that WWE lowered the standards on who can win the World Heavyweight Title. Since then, Rey has won the Intercontinental Championship two times.

I can see Rey Mysterio getting World Heavyweight Championship matches, but I don't know if he'd win it. I mean, since losing it, Rey Mysterio hasn't had any push closely even near what he had in 2006. He's competed for the same title several times and never won it. The good thing about Rey Mysterio is that he doesn't always need the title to get over. The kids love watching him in the ring, and that's what really matters. I don't find it too likely for Rey to win the title again, but if they needed him, he's sure to be there.

It's certainly not an impossible thought at all, in my opinion Rey has what it takes to be a champion...he is very over, can work a great match, can work with many different performers of varying levels of ability and has a great ring presence.

I would agree with those who say size no longer matters....it has been proved time and time again that you don't have to be the biggest guy in the world to be a champion or more importantly a successful champion, in fact some of the very best world champions have been smaller people.

It was unfortunate for Mysterio that his first and only run with a major belt wasn't that great...he wasn't always necessarily booked as a champion, I remember him getting decimated by guys like Khali and Kane and people complained. The only thing is, had Mysterio convincingly beat those guys then I'm sure we would have gotton the age old argument that realistically Rey could not beat them....so in actual fact it was difficult for Rey because if he looked weak people complained but had he been booked really dominant others would have said that it was too unbelievable.

However, despite all that I woudn't object to Rey as champion again...there are certainly worse options and I think Rey can be a successful champion with careful planning and booking.

Yeah its defo a future possibility and something id like to see. I think that Rey has payed his dues and has proven to be a worthy contender, at least, for one of the big titles so i dont see any reason why he should'nt be a world champion again.

As most of the previous posters above has said, size no longer matters. The Punks ect of this world are doing just fine in the world of wrestling today, and thats an understatment.

Rey is fun and solid in the ring and is over with the fans.He makes money and fits this era(PG) perfectly.

So defo, i think he will at LEAST once more.
