CM Punk Signs With UFC?

I don't know, I've read some comments from fans that would say "yes", but Brock is a different t beast than Punk.

Brock also had about as much training as Punk, maybe a little less.

We already know Punk's been training in BJJ, he's been working with the Gracies. Brock made it to the top, and were it not for diverticulitis, he may still be doing it.

I just don't think it's out of the realm of possibility thy he can do well. That's all.

I know he has a Muay Thai background, but his future opponents do little besides fighting day in day out and have done so for years. And wasn't he refusing to go to the gym in WWE? I remember reading that, but I'm not sure how legit that was.

I can only see him getting his ass handed to him left and right. But it has me interested for sure.

Good on Punk is he can draw in a different medium that isn't WWE. Unfortunately this means they'll try to stop anyone not named John Cena from ever trying to reach too big a level so something like this will never happen again.

Or the E could just snatch up the top wrestlers from college and fighters from the small leagues and turn them into pro wrestlers before they can sign with UFC and larger MMA promotions.

Fight fire with fire supposedly.

Brock was also an All-American wrestler in college and hadn't just been training for a few years.

Exactly. Brock is a beast. Punk is, well... a punk.

A look at some of the people Punk could potentially face; keep in mind, these are all people at the top of their weight class.

Is Punk really that much smaller than them?

Fair, but the wrestling (while necessary) surely can't be as important as a good striking game and good BJJ skills. None of which Lesnar had, and he became champion.

I guess but they hate that hybrid mixing of MMA/Wrestling type of stuff. And the WWE is style is too tame to try to do what the indies can pull off in terms of move-sets.

It also helped that Brock can probably bench press a small car. Punk is in good shape but it's going to take a lot more than that to pull this off.

Am pretty much pretending to be the slightest bit of an MMA expert but are you really discounting Brock's amateur wrestling background in his success?

We've also been looking at Punk against people much larger than him on a weekly basis. Anyone is going to look smaller when they wrestler next to Cena and Orton.

I imagine, up against people that are 185 (tops), Punk's not going to look nearly as small

We might be getting a little bit ahead of ourselves by doubting his ability. I haven't seen him fight. Maybe he's good. I want to see him catch a beating, but I'll be happy if he's good and does good. Of course he's no Brock Lesnar. No human is a Brock Lesnar. If this is a publicity stunt, so be it, but it's intriguing and if Punk pulls it off then good for him.

Am I discounting it? Course not.

Am I saying Brock was an absolutely flawed competitor, with little BJJ skill and passable standup game? Yes.

Did any of that matter for him?

I'm struggling to see how you help your argument here.

And I fail to see how Lesnar's case is any different than Punk's?

  • Lesnar was a trained wrestler
  • Lesnar also was pretty mediocre with BJJ, and relied on fairly subpar skills to get by.
  • Punk has been getting BJJ training, as well as having a Muay Thai
  • BJJ and Muay Thai > Wrestling skills

We're clear here? That last one is debatable... But I'm not sure by how much, really.

I've got my doubts about Punk doing this. Apart from coming across as the world's biggest hypocrite, I question whether he can handle the big dogs in UFC.

He shouldn't have to worry about any big dogs for a while unless he actually does turn out to be good and strings together a few impressive wins.

Being big does help, size will always matter in some regard.

But size really doesn't matter in a weight class, when you're opponent is guaranteed to be at your or around your weight.

This isn't pro wrestling, guys...C.M. Punk is not going against people looking like John Cena every week. Hell, BJ Penn used to make a career of saying size mattered fuck all. And that worked pretty well for him.

That wasn't my point. Regardless of how skilled Brock may or may not bee, he still looks larger than life. His look is like 90% of his appeal. Punk may or may not be quite skilled too, but he doesn't have the look Lesnar does. Or John Cena. And image is something he's always struggled with. And sure, UFC is different than wrestling, but at the same time UFC fans creamed themselves when Brock joined the ranks... because of his look. CM Punk has allot more going against him than just perceived skill.

Yeah. If C.M. Punk was going into weight classes with people like John Cena and Brock Lesnar, sure. He'd be fucked.

He shouldn't be worried about image, though. At least not nearly as much as just going out there and not embarrassing himself. If his opponents take him lightly because of his background or body, that could work to his advantage. If it's about being a draw, well, Punk will never be a Brock-level draw, but he'll still bring eyeballs as a curiosity.

You've got to give it to Punk though-he follows his dreams no matter what. It wouldn't matter to him even if his entire family thought he was going to get killed.
