CM Punk Signs With UFC?

And I fail to see how Lesnar's case is any different than Punk's?

  • Lesnar was a trained wrestler
  • Lesnar also was pretty mediocre with BJJ, and relied on fairly subpar skills to get by.
  • Punk has been getting BJJ training, as well as having a Muay Thai
  • BJJ and Muay Thai > Wrestling skills

We're clear here? That last one is debatable... But I'm not sure by how much, really.

Does age matter?

If Punk expects to stay on for three-four years? Sure.

If this is a short term deal, and Punk's done in a year or two (which I would expect)? Probably less so.

Again, I'm not saying Punk is going to be champion... But if he's dedicated enough (and, not for nothing, but you can never really question his passion), he'll probably be just fine. He'll win some, he'll lose some, and probably most important, he can say he did it.

This is the guy's dream. If I was paid half a million to fuck Kate Upton in front of the world, I'm not going to turn it down if I think the world's going to laugh at me when she asks to give her the Rusty Trombone #badanalogies #playonwords

I thought the guy's dream was last match at Mania. And please don't sexualize women that way ;) .

My point is that UFC is supposed to be this top notch fighting factory and they basically just gave a contract to a 36 year old celebrity who spent the last few years of his life supposedly working injured. And I am supposed to believe his matches are legit.

Smells like Celebrity UFC to me. I hope they can work out a match with Screech or Danby Bonaduce.

Really, I want to know this, he'll be making his debut in 2015 and he's been gone since January this year. Can't some doctor fix him up in this time?

To be fair, I did give Kate Upton the office to be in charge, so that totally counts for feminism.

Let's be real here... This isn't a case of UFC being a top notch fighting factory, nor is it about giving a contact to a 36 year old celebrity. This is about UFC being a top notch fighting company and giving a contract to a celebrity. I suppose we could be upset for the guys who work hard to get to UFC, but we all know what this is; it's a cash grab. At least, for UFC, it is. And if Punk does well, great. But this is the UFC being (really) shallow in depth, and needing names. Right now, it's Rousey, Hendricks, Weidman, and...?

I am genuinely excited, as most of us are and want the man to do well.

I believe he will be very well prepared for this.

Also, CM Punk goes to UFC the very same weekend Teddy Hart goes to jail. Coincidence? I think not.

I guess but they hate that hybrid mixing of MMA/Wrestling type of stuff. And the WWE is style is too tame to try to do what the indies can pull off in terms of move-sets.

I dunno. Josh Barnett is a pro wrestler, and a modern day catch master. And he has done really well in the UFC. WWE has Bryan, who is well versed in catch, as are a few others. Grappling is also pretty extensively used in both mediums, with Swagger and Velasquez both being quite skilled.

Great point. Punk bitches about part timers coming in and getting big time spots and money from Vince and then has the audacity to do the same in UFC.

Gee, I wonder if Dana White ever sends out fighters that are hurt or asks fighters to come back before they are ready.

Punk won't be thrown in the deep end.

Dana White said:
It's not like Brock Lesnar. We're not going to throw the kitchen sink at him. Lesnar had a wrestling background. He's going to fight a guy who is 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 -- something like that.

You're the MMA guy; how do you think he'll do? If you have an opinion on it, that is. (I mean, I guess it's difficult to really gauge how well he'll do, right?)

It's impossible to know how good he can possibly be. I've only seen him do crappy Gracie videos. When that's the only evidence of his fighting ability, you just can't tell how good or bad he could possibly be.

That said, this is the same sport where a 50-year-old Herschel Walker is 2-0, so it won't surprise me at all if Punk beats a couple of no-names. Just because this has the "UFC" name on it doesn't mean they don't employ some bums.

To be fair I don't think Punk is after the money, this is something he's been talking about for a long time now. In UFC you know what to expect, and the road schedule is nothing compared to WWE's.

Whelp.... That's a shame for MMA non-fans. And hefty loss to wrestling fans. Hope he'll give wrestling a second thought in a few years when hopefully smaller companies are a little bigger.

Honestly man, I think the real reason Punk is doing this is to draw big and then get that Lesnar/Rock level contract with WWE. That's his true goal, not to win a UFC Title.
