In an interesting twist, Capcoms shareholders have voted to end their takeover defense. Set up in 2008, the takeover defense was a series of strategies designed to prevent outside companies from buying up a majority of Capcoms stock, but shareholders voted against renewing it at their latest investors meeting, which opens the company up for potential buyers.
This by no means signifies an end to Capcom as a third party developer an outside company would still have to pay a hefty sum to acquire over 50% of Capcoms stock but its now a distinct possibility.
Capcom is no longer the lucrative giant it once was, but any potential buyers would gain exclusive rights to important franchises like Street Fighter, Ace Attorney, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Mega Man, and many more. What company, if any, will make them an offer they cant refuse?
How big would it be if Nintendo decided to shell out the amount to take control of the company? Nintendo has loads of Capcom related titles that have become successful under their systems. The Ace Attorney series alone is a huge draw to the 3DS system. And of course how popular Monster Hunter has become. Resident Evil 4 was absolutely huge on the Gamecube and of course Megaman was all over the NES, Gameboy, GBA and DS up until Capcom stopped caring. Hell, Capcom developed most of the handheld Legend Of Zelda titles.
To me, this would be a huge gain for Nintendo with so many major franchises on the line. Obviously, they'd have to shell out a lot of money, but I'd like to think the upside would be far bigger in the long run than the pricetag.
