Capcom Now Open For Potential Purchase

In an interesting twist, Capcom’s shareholders have voted to end their takeover defense. Set up in 2008, the takeover defense was a series of strategies designed to prevent outside companies from buying up a majority of Capcom’s stock, but shareholders voted against renewing it at their latest investor’s meeting, which opens the company up for potential buyers.
This by no means signifies an end to Capcom as a third party developer – an outside company would still have to pay a hefty sum to acquire over 50% of Capcom’s stock – but it’s now a distinct possibility.

Capcom is no longer the lucrative giant it once was, but any potential buyers would gain exclusive rights to important franchises like Street Fighter, Ace Attorney, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Mega Man, and many more. What company, if any, will make them an offer they can’t refuse?

How big would it be if Nintendo decided to shell out the amount to take control of the company? Nintendo has loads of Capcom related titles that have become successful under their systems. The Ace Attorney series alone is a huge draw to the 3DS system. And of course how popular Monster Hunter has become. Resident Evil 4 was absolutely huge on the Gamecube and of course Megaman was all over the NES, Gameboy, GBA and DS up until Capcom stopped caring. Hell, Capcom developed most of the handheld Legend Of Zelda titles.

To me, this would be a huge gain for Nintendo with so many major franchises on the line. Obviously, they'd have to shell out a lot of money, but I'd like to think the upside would be far bigger in the long run than the pricetag.

If I were Microsoft, I'd go all in here. Do you realize what getting Capcom versus games would do for the Xbox One if that title became exclusive? Hell, they could even go ahead and make Street Fighter vs. Killer Instinct if they wanted to. Add a Platform jumping Megaman over to Xbox, as well as the Resident Evil franchise and they could easily become the console of the new generation.

As for Capcom itself, I feel sad for them but I honestly saw this coming. Even with their recent 31st Anniversary, it's kind of impossible to make any money when you're not reproducing new games.

I used to love Capcom. Resident Evil 4/Code Veronica, Devil May Cry 1,2, and 3 and several others were my games of choice on my PS2.

Honestly there haven't been any games from them recently that I've enjoyed/ could be asked to get. Resident Evil 5 was a disappointment and I couldn't be bothered with 6. The new Devil May Cry looks alright but I'm in no rush for it.

I think Capcom's problem like many other's is they have started to make stuff according to marketing. They see what is popular and try to mimic it and in my opinion that never works.

As to who would buy them. I hope it's an independent company. I'd rather see Capcom titles on all rather than one console. Although I guess if I was forced to pick one of the console companies to purchase them Nintendo seems the best bet as they generally don't care that much for trends to much with Sony in second as Sony can put out some interesting unique titles.
