It isn't exactly "official", but he reportedly told HC Jim Caldwell about it the day after the regular season ended.

Johnson recently turned 30, but he's still a Top 5 WR in the NFL when healthy. He has countless NFL records, 6 pro bowls, and 4 all pros.

His career stats are 731 receptions for 11,619 yards and 83 TD.

Where does Calvin Johnson rank among the all-time great WRs? Is he hall of fame worthy? Do you have any other thoughts on his career?

I personally like it. I traded him in my dynasty league. I did it back in August. I got Kelvin Benjamin, Jeremy Langford, and Donte Moncrief. Oh and the guy threw in Torrey Smith too. He went all in for winning this year, and he did so at least that paid off for him...although Johnson didn't exactly have superstar numbers. I saw his decline in 2014 and was expecting him to hit the wall, but I didn't think he'd retire. Anyway I'm set for the future now. I have OBJ, Mike Evans, and Kelvin Benjamin as my top three wideouts, and Moncrief as my flex. This is a 12 team league too, and it's an auction. Every guy has salaries, out of a $260 cap. Megatron was $40 when I traded him. Benjamin is $5.

It's funny how similar Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders are. Both are Lions, both retired at 30, both never won a Super Bowl despite clearly being the best at their positons for the longest time, both set records for yards in a season (Although Barry's was broken by Adrian Peterson).

It's a shame Calvin ended up on the Lions. With a good QB, they really could have been unstoppable. He made Matthew Stafford. That team is going back to the cellar for a very long time now that Calvin is gone.

It's the end of another disappointing season. Johnson is likely tired, hurting, and upset with not getting anywhere in his career (overall team/Superbowl type goals). I won't actually believe this until it happens. Even then, I give it until the Regular season kicks in, and someone that's worthy of a playoff push needs a WR.

Johnson to New England has also been rumored. Personally I'm tired of hearing all these reports and theories on aging vet WR's going to New England in hopes of landing a ring. I get why, but it's no more guaranteed that they're getting to the Superbowl than anyone else. Although clearly they have the AFC on lockdown for the most part.

Personally, I think Johnson to Pittsburgh, or even Indy, would be a hell of a move. He would only add to their offensive fire power and overloading those WR's in Pittsburgh, matched with a solid rushing attack - Pittsburgh is a couple defensive studs away from moving New England off the top seat. Technically I think they would've beaten New England this year, if it weren't for the series of injuries they suffered right before the playoffs.

Still, going back to the whole Johnson retirement situation - I don't believe it. I think he'll rethink his decision, and decide to play 1-3 more seasons, depending on the turn out of those years. A lot also goes with whether Detroit lets him out of his contract. Perhaps he'll retire simply because he no longer wants to be in the motor city.
