It was alright. The majority of the film was pretty much shit, but the battle sequences were very, very well done. It was pretty cartoonish though, especially when Chris Klein says "I'm glad I got to die for my country"...SO cheesy and lame.

The score though was badass.

pretty much the best part of it. damn right. When they are first jumping on the choppers, with that old Scottish Hymn playing? GET THE FUCK OUT. Makes my hair stand up every time.

I dug the part at the end when the enemy general finds the wee lil American flag.

bitchez.

I've always been a big fan of war movies. I imagine though that they must not hold very much interest from you.

But I'll ask you the ultimate war movie question....which is better, Platoon or Apocalypse Now?

they dont. I liked We Were soldiers, and The Patriot. Thats pretty much it.

Platoon. although ive never given Apocalypse now a proper veiwing. I enjoy Full metal jacket more than the both of them.

Just watched The Day The Earth Stood Still. It takes a real talentless hack to take a good film with a point and turn it into a pointless, artless, piece of crap that tries to be both story and blockbuster and fails on both counts.
And it has Keanu Reeves in it...

Apocalypse Now is the greatest war movie of all time in my book, but Platoon is the greatest combat film of all time, if that makes any sense. Apocalypse is about so much more than just the Vietnam war, which is more of just a backdrop to tell the Heart of Darkness story, whereas Platoon is all about the grunt's POV from the front lines. They're both such classics its hard to pick.

I've always felt Full Metal Jacket was overrated. The second half of the film just goes nowhere. Still great, but there are several better Vietnam movies.

Apocalypse Now is an overrated piece of shit, in my opinion. The Robert Duvall scene is fucking superb, but that's about it.

I loved Jarhead too though, X. Great film. It's my favorite performance from Jamie Foxx , actually.

Platoon and Full Metal Jacket were both awesome.

We Were Soldiers was fun as hell, but definitely doesn't rank up there with the greatest War movies of all time.

The Patriot beats them all for me, personally. Absolutely loved that movie.

I too, always wished they gave more time to Basic. same thing with jarhead. its such a fucking interesting place, i could never say enough about it. The films never give it due justice

one of my favorite movies of all teh timez

Seriously? The Patriot is another piece of shit Hollywood-ized turd. Did you know Mel Gibson single-handedly won the Revolutionary War?

Why do you think Apocalypse Now is overrated JMT? We strongly disagree for once!

I'm also very partial to The Thin Red Line. Underrated classic that was overshadowed by the equally great Saving Private Ryan.

Never saw Stop-Loss JMT. It's from the woman who did Boys Don't Cry right?

I forgot about that one. Fucking epic in every sense of the word.

The opening scene of Saving Private Ryan where they storm Normandy is just the greatest fucking thing EVER. Like, EVER. That one scene is better than any war movie ever made combined and multiplied by twenty. Seriously, no battle scene has ever been so fucking hardcorely EPIC and intense as that one. They should show that scene to film students for the rest of eternity.

I can admit a lot of it is ridiculous, but man is it also mind-blowing entertainment.

I just never got the hype for it, man. It's boring as all hell, and the climax was just absolute shit and one of the worst I've ever seen.

The Darkness doc is brilliant, though.

Agreed

Never saw Stop-Loss JMT. It's from the woman who did Boys Don't Cry right?

Yes.

Not a great film, but very good with a heartfelt message. Also, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance is absolutely flawless.

they showed it to us at my HS, and one of the hippy punkster anti anti chicks started laughing when they showed ol boy carrying his arm in his hand.

I flipped the fuck out on her, right there in class, in front of the rest of the students, god, and country :lmao:

I think Come And See's the greatest war movie ever made. In fact, I think it's tied with Amadeus for the best film of the 1980s.

Come and See is fucking brutal. I'd consider that a horror film quite frankly. But really I suppose any war film could technically be a horror film, what's more horrifying than war?

But yeah, Come and See is both brutal and amazing. Fantastic film, though I'm not sure I'd declare it the best film of the eighties. Amadeus either. Both are amazing, but there are several other films I think would deserve that title more.

Really, or are you just being a douchebag Sam? I just watched it again last night and it was even better than I remember it being in theaters.

Mel Gibson in the Patriot is actually the ultimate bad ass combination of four or so real peeps.

Loved Apocalypse now.

Doesn't really make the movie much better. It's a guilty pleasure though for sure, who doesn't love watching Mel Gibson single handedly defeat the Redcoats?

I put up a review for Jarhead in my review thread for anyone who's interested.
