Bullshit about Movies

Why'd you hate Shoot Em Up? It's the same kind of movie as Crank, another film I'm a fan of. These are action movies that know they are ridiculous, and play it up the tenth degree, which is why I love them. They're like watching a great video game or something. Of course it's fucking RIDICULOUSLY unreal and illogical, but I thought most of Shoot 'Em Up was pretty damn fun. How often do you get to see Paul Giamatti as that kind of character? Rarely.

Eagle Eye was just an abortion on film JMT, have you actually seen it? Read my review in my review thread and you'll get a hint at just how awful it is.

I just thought it was a ******ed piece of shit, man. Sometimes ******ed pieces of shit can be enjoyable, but Shoot 'Em Up just annoyed the ever living hell out of me. I don't know what it was, but I just could never get into it.

And I absolutely love Paul Giamatti, for the record, and him being a part of a film that I felt was so incredibly bad hurts me.

No I haven't seen it and I have read your review (good shit, btw). But I think I'm going to check it out nonetheless. I've seen literally everything else Shia LaBeouf has done (except Indiana Jones), and I really like Michelle Monaghan, so I want to check the film out for myself.

Speaking of Shia and Michelle Monaghan, what'd you think of Disturbia and The Heartbreak Kid?

Both were pieces of shit. Disturbia was a shitty Rear Window ripoff that was only made enjoyable by Shia (what can I say, I like the kid, he's always fun to watch), and The Heartbreak Kid was enjoyable for about 20 minutes in the way that the Farrely Brothers movies usually are. The only thing I really enjoyed from that film was Danny McBride, who I absolutely love.

Both shit though.

I've been gone far too long. Too long to read up all I missed, but I'll make mention of two little things I saw.

I liked Disturbia. Maybe it's because I haven't seen Rear Window, but I like how it builds up to a great ending. It made it scary, although not much happens that would scare you otherwise.

Also, I am a huge fan of Shoot Em Up. Clive Owen is one of my favorites, and I love the overdone action scenes. Giamatti is also gold. I don't think I've seen him in a shitty part. He even made Private Parts watchable.

I just got done re-watching Training Day, I have to admit, its a highly underrated gang film. Its got one of the best storylines ever, with the neatest plot unwravvel at the of the movie I've ever seen. I would deffinetly put this over Gran Torino, and I do believe thats the 2nd greatest gang movie ever.

...Huh? Those two movies aren't even gang movies to begin with, let alone the greatest ever made. Training Day is a film about the LAPD Rampart Division and Gran Torino is a film about Clint Eastwood, not the gang. The gang plotline was completely secondary to the main focus of the film, which is Eastwood's character coming to terms with life without his wife and accepting his time has come. Neither of those films are "gang" movies.

Besides, the greatest gang film ever made is City of God, and no one can dispute that. City of God makes two great films like Training Day & Gran Torino look like amateur homemade movies in comparison. Menace II Society gets an honorable mention as well and is better than both of those films.

City of God is the best film about gang life and gangs in general though, and there's no debating that. But anyone feel free to try to.

Man I just saw Gran Torino the other night for the first time. Great movie, it shows how good Clint Eastwood really is as an actor. I loved it and it had me hooked from the get go.

I can't decide what to watch. Towelhead or more Star Trek.

Anyone seen Towelhead? I've heard both great and awful things about it. It's Alan Ball, so there's no doubt I have to see it.

Agree 100%.

I agree that the film isn't good from start to finish, but there are hysterical moments in it. Like you said... about 20 minutes of great stuff spread around, with the rest being absolute trash, especially the entire last act.

Anyway, couldn't sleep last night so I popped in Irréversible for some reason. Haven't watched it in years, and it's as disturbing/incredible as I remember it being.

Irréversible is hands down one of the most horrifying films I've ever seen. It's not "scary" per se or even technically a horror film, but the rape scene and especially the fire extinguisher scene never fail to shock and disturb me. Very rarely does a film show violence for what it truly is: ugly and disgusting. Violence has been glorified by Hollywood action movies for so long you'd think people getting shot or beaten up was a clean, fun thing to do.

Irréversible is definitely one of those films that I feel is required viewing. Most people will be far too disturbed to want to finish the film, but the message it sends is one that everyone should be aware of I think. Violence isn't a fun thing, and Irréversible shows this.

I'd love to hear what tdigs would have to say on that one.

I remember him saying in his "French Horror" thread in the Movies Section that he believes its one of the greatest movies ever made. Ever since reading that I've been planning on rewatching it, and last night I was just in the mood for it. It's definitely an experience to sit through that movie.

Have you ever seen I Stand Alone? Apparently the big guy character at the beginning of Irréversible (you know... the one in jail who slept with his daughter) story is told in I Stand Alone, which is from the same director of Irréversible. Just wondering if I should check that on out?

I also finally got Cache and The Piano Teacher, so I'll have to get around to watching those some time this week or next.

Haven't ever gotten around to seeing I Stand Alone, though it looks very good. Noé is an extremely talented filmmaker, so I imagine it would be well worth watching.

I can't decide what to watch, if anything. I keep starting to watch movies, and than stopping and saying "I don't really want to watch this now". In the last hour I've started Halloween 3, Towelhead, Hard Eight, The Fountain, and Brazil, and ended up turning all of them off. I guess I just feel like watching something relatively new that won't have to require my full attention to fully understand/appreciate it.

Have you ever seen Brazil, JMT? Or any of those films really?

I really, really want to see Towelhead, so selfishly... I want you to watch that and then given me your thoughts on it. :icon_razz:

And no, I haven't seen Brazil. Saw it on a few times and it just didn't look like something I'd be into. Do you recommend it though?

And I've seen Hard Eight and The Fountain. Both are cases of my least favorite work from each director. Hard Eight was okay, but nothing special. I love Paul Thomas Anderson though. And The Fountain... I just couldn't get into, man. I wanted to so badly, but it never caught on for me.

All right, well I've just started watching it, and from the total of about 2 minutes I've seen thus far, I can already tell this is going to be a very different kind of film. Fuck I love Alan Ball, hopefully this is great. Pretty dark already in the first two minutes. I'll let you know what I think when I finish it.

Summer Bishil is fucking gorgeous though.

Oh man DEFINITELY give it a viewing when you get the chance. It's Terry Gilliam at his absolute best, and is probably the greatest future dystopia film ever made. Robert De Niro has a hilarious small part in the film as well. Definitely worth a viewing.

I've had both of them on my DVR forever but haven't gotten around to them. I saw a workprint of The Fountain before they had finished editing the film and really enjoyed what I saw, but I've yet to see the final product yet. Have to get around to that.

And PT Anderson can do no wrong in my book, so I'm sure I'll end up enjoying Hard Eight. I'm not expecting Boogie Nights or Magnolia though.

Just finished watching Towelhead JMT, very good. The last half hour or so kind of lost some steam and prevented it from being a truly great film, but it was very good. Definitely worth watching, some great performances all around and one of the few films I've ever seen to really truthfully deal with adolescent sexuality. I'd give 3.5/5. I'll have a full review up in my thread sometime later tonight.

I think it just came out recently.

I went to the local 'indy' theater, and it was awesome. Opening hooks you, I felt that it was well paced.

Plus Ralph Fiennes makes a guest appearance.

Here is the opening to I Stand Alone:

If you like what you see here, then I would recommend it. Also, if you watch I Stand Alone and like it, Noe did a short film called Carne in 1991, which deals with the stabbing and prison sentence mentioned in I Stand Alone's opening scene. I don't think it's available anywhere on DVD in the US, but, PM me if you are interested in seeing it (though I definitely recommend watching I Stand Alone first).

Also, Dario Argento's thread in the Directors Showcase should be up on Tuesday. So, get out your Suspiria, Opera, and Tenebrae DVDs, as those will be the films that I am covering (I don't think I'll be doing a "worst" film for Argento; he does have some mediocre films, but I like the three aforementioned ones too much to disparage his other work).
