Bullshit About Movies, Release Dates, and Box Office (PLEASE READ FIRST POST)

Just watched Jennifer's Body and yep pretty much what I expected, in fact I say it was slightly more entertaining than I thought, though you have to remember that the movie is dark comedy, and not meant to be taken seriously by any means, it isn't a movie that I will be watching over and over again, I may watch it one more time with friends but that's about it, just one of those movies you watch when you have a little time to waste

I normally absolutely hate Matthew McConaughey as well but he was very good in this film too, especially the last half hour or so. I'd put this right next to his role in Dazed and Confused in terms of his best roles.

I actually dig McConaughey quite a bit. Sure, those shitty romantic comedies make up the majority of his work, but still... Frailty, Dazed and Confused, Time to Kill, Amistad, Thirteen Conversations About One Thing, Two for the Money, and We Are Marshall are all movies I liked a lot.

Anyway, watched What Women Want for the first time this morning on Showtime. Why? I don't know. But I sat through the whole fucking thing. Outside of Marisa Tomei's scenes, it was a real piece of shit. Though, Helen Hunt was actually pretty attractive in this movie. I never thought so before, in this she was kind of cute. That Ashley Johnson though, Woof. Not only is she not attractive in the least bit, but her acting is atrocious and completely fucking annoying. I've now seen her in this, Otis, and on Roseanne, and she is beyond terrible. She's the type of actor who can be the sole reason for a good film to get ruined for me. Hopefully she doesn't ever get cast in really good shit, though.

So X, I told you I would get back to you on what I though of District 9 and here we go. I was absolutely blown away by it. Like I said before big budget science fiction films have not been my favorite in recent history but with the information you gave me beforehand that District 9 wasn't all about that, it certainly prepared me better for it.

It was one the best movies I have seen this year, not the best but at the top of the list. The visuals were fucking amazing, especially for the aliens and the mother ship. The acting was good enough, I was not real into the main guy until later in the movie but I figure that was how it was supposed to be. I am usually really down on anything Peter Jackson gets his hands on but I really liked District 9 and will be buying it eventually.

The first film is great. The second is still fun. The third is mediocre, and from there they turn into shit mostly. But enjoyable shit, if you know what I mean. They're this eras cheesy slasher genre, only gorier. I don't know, the traps are always fun to watch but the plots and acting and writing all just have turned to shit in that franchise, especially because anything Darren Lynn Bousman touches turns into pure shit. The man is the definition of a hack.
So I watched every film except for 6, and I have to say I agree with you. I'd probably say the original Saw was the best, saw 2 and 3 follow closely in second, and Saw 4 and 5 are the worst. I think Saw 2 and 3 had superior acting to the original, and I thought they were both really good. I still rank the original higher than the rest, though, as it was a classic. I think if they stopped at Saw 3, then the saw franchise would be more appreciated. They were milking it with 4 and 5, and you could tell because the quality wasn't quite on par with the first three. Additionally, how can you have a Saw without jigsaw and his iconic voice? Like you said, though, still enjoyable.

I thought it was hilarious, then again I do enjoy cheesy movies such as Jennifer's Body and Snakes on A plane. It was exactly what I expected it to be but much funnier because, well it was just so bad. Though, Megan Fox did go down a few notch's on my wank-o-meter, they made her look ugly in some scenes.

Anyways, the real reason I came into this thread was to write my reaction to A History of Violence. Damn, this was a fine film I kind of hate myself for not watching it before now. Viggo Mortgenson is the fucking man. He always impresses me and I can not wait to watch Eastern Promises and The Road. Also, Ed Harris was amazing, he always is, but more so in this film then any other that I have seen him in. One of the finest films I have seen in awhile and was most certainly worth the the $3.49 that I spent on it.

Way more entertaining and interesting than Last of the Mohicans. Totally worth your time JMT, especially since your a big lover of T2 and Cameron. Hands down the most fun you'll have at the movies this year. Maybe not the best film of the year, but possibly the most entertaining. That film is just pure Hollywood escapist fun at it's absolute best, it really sucks you into the world of the Na'avi like very few films I've seen before. By the time it was over I wanted to see more and more and it was already 3 hours long.

You know what else was escapist fun, Transformers 1. Enjoyable, not very good. Also probably better in 3D on a massive screen. Unfortunately not many of us have cinema screens at home.

Your favorite bit, I'm guessing all the tribal dancing or the bit at the end where the big blue thing holds the poor little crippled man in his arms. Romanic to you, stupid if you're not the sort of person who loves Benjamin Button shit.

My favorite part was Cameron's loving recreation of...a rainforest?

Definitely worth your time dude. Some of the dialogue and acting can be off, but man it is a great movie.

Your Titanic poster review I presume.

Has anyone seen 9? My girlfriend is really interested in it and we missed it theaters. It looks pretty cool, but I haven't heard anything about it since it came out. So what did you think? Good? Bad? Worth buying?

Which one? The film Nine in theaters right now, the quasi-musical about Fellini? If so I'd recommend going to see it, I've heard very good things about it. I myself haven't seen it, but I plan to soon enough being a self-professed Fellini and French New Wave nerd. Actually on second thought maybe you should avoid it, not sure Fellini would be your thing, or musicals for that matter. Plus I believe it's from the guy who made Chicago, which was a steaming pile of shit.

If you're talking about the animated film that came out a few months ago with the ensemble cast, I've heard great and okay things about it. I mean I've heard from some people it was excellent, but from others I've heard it completely falls apart in the second half of the film. I believe there's actually a thread on the film in this section somewhere Thriller, give me a second to look.

Yep, here you go: http://forums.wrestlezone.com/showthread.php?t=65061

Contemplating watchign a film today and taking a break from all of the wrestling I've been watching. Thinking about finally getting around to seeing Reds, anyone a fan of the film? Seen it? Opinions? TDigs, JMT, I'm looking at you. Maybe Jake, he likes communists. Film I've been meaning to watch for about a decade now.

Who's seen Orphan? God damn I was blown away by that! My Fav Movie of the year EASILY. And the twist at the end was like :wtf:

Jennifer's Body was cool. A bit too goofy at times and new age horror but I liked it, especially the evolution of the girl that wasent Megan Fox.

9- I like it but not as much as the previews made it out to be. Ive seen it twice now and still really dont know what it's even about. I dont like Elijah Wood but John C Reily was a plus. And the bonus features were cool. Kinda wish I got Half Blood Prince instead though.

Anyone have a Transformers 2 review? I heard it was crap.

I saw Up in The Air this past week and I loved it. I thought it was well-crafted and effortless and I had a great time at the theatre. I've never been a huge Clooney fan but he really was lovely in this, one of his best performances, as were the two supporting ladies (Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick). Charming, funny, depressing, real. A great little film.

I thought this was one of the greatest action films of all time that introduced Kurt Russell to the action movie genre and made him a hugh star(for awhile), in Hollywood. The movie was well done showing us a world were war took over and bascially was the downfall of mankind. Also a president who is corrupt and a jackass at best, and that even higher officials like the president of the united states cannot be trusted at all. Then of course you have the badass hero Snake Plisstken, who is a highly skilled and trained war vet, risking his life and saving the president in the most dangerous city in the world, New York City. You also have Issac Hayes as the villian in the movie, Duke of New York, who was a good villian, although he could of had more scenes in the film. Anyways what do people think of this classic action movie?

Right on, I absolutely love Escape From New York. I'm a massive fan of John Carpenter so of course I love this film, and Kurt Russell has always been one of my favorite actors. It just doesn't get more badass than Snake Plissken man. Aside from that though the whole movie has a great cast with guys like Harry Dean Stanton, Donald Pleasence, and Adrienne Barbeau among many others. The score is typical of John Carpenter, which is to say it's fucking awesome. All around just a great classic action film made at a time when Carpenter was at his very best.

Figure I might get drunk and watch The Hangover tonight with a few friends. I'm super cool like that.

Speaking of The Hangover, don't you think it's overrated as hell? I've read a bunch of user reviews online, and some people are declaring this movie the greatest comedy ever. I liked the movie, and I've seen it twice. It was well done, but I think a lot of people are giving this movie way too much praise. I also mainly have a knock on this movie because how poorly Mike Epps was used.

Definitely nowhere near the greatest comedy film ever made, but I really enjoyed it. Then again I really enjoyed Wedding Crashers in theaters before it became cool to hate on that film as well. The Hangover was a BLAST to see on a rambunctious Saturday night with some friends drunk as all hell, haven't watched it since I got the DVD a few weeks ago. Figure I'll watch it tonight.

I just love the movie because I LOVE Zach G. and especially Ed Helms.

Don't it seem that Mike epps in mvies these days are being misused. I mean they had this dude in Resident Evil for christ sakes. Then at the end credits of Hancock, not to mention the disaster movie of Next Day Air. Epps was tough back in the early 00s with Next Friday and Friday After Next.

I just saw Avatar in 3D, and it was awesome.

The problem is, though, that people rave about the looks which makes people think it's an "overbudgeted piece of crap that relies on looks alone" if I may quote one of my friends who isn't going to see it.

It's nothing like that at all. This movie had me completely emotionally invested, which is something that hasn't happened in a long time. It had an amazing heart and good story, and was just damn enjoyable. I hope people stop hyping the CGI and start raving about the story, because it was a good film.

I don't know how much love their is for animation on this board, but I thought I'd briefly talk about some of the one's that I've seen recently.

I heard Doc mention UP, and yes, I agree fully. That was a terrific film. It had a heavy message, with a good story, and the characters were all likable in their own right. Pretty good movie overall.

Ratatouille is also a great movie for any animation buffs out there. Just a fun and engaging movie from the get-go. The rat is the star in this movie, and there's a message in this as well, something to the extent of "an artist can come form anywhere". Entertaining movie, if you can get over a few minor things such as the weirdness of a rat controlling a man's body by his hair.

Monster's inc. is also pretty good. Has some comedy with a side of emotion. The characters are great, the story is solid, and it has the feel akin to a Toy Story which is always a major plus.

Bolt has been playing on Stars and I caught a little piece of it, I liked what I saw.

I feel like I'm talking too much about animations, so to save face I'm going to leisurely leave.

1920 - 2010

Fellow film buffs, a truly gifted filmmaker has left us today. For those unaware of Éric Rohmer, he was one of the most significant directors associated with the French New Wave movement of the late-1950s/1960s. Although not as beloved by English-speaking cinephiles as Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut, I always believed Rohmer to be the most talented of the French New Wave directors, and most definitely the best writer. If you're ever in the mood for an intellectual foreign film, I highly recommend Rohmer's My Night at Maud's.

Oh fuck me running, Rohmer is dead? How did he pass away? I imagine old age, well atleast he got to live a long and wonderful life. I'm a big French New Wave guy, and although I wouldn't put Rohmer on the same level as Truffaut, he was uniquely brilliant in his own way that was very different from the other auteurs of French cinema. The man's influence can be seen even today in the works of filmmakers like Gus Van Sant in it's handling of the fourth wall.

Damnit that sucks man. That puts a sad cap on this night. I'll have to dig out my Six Moral Tales Criterion set this week. He will be missed, greatly. He helped change cinema forever.

Have you watched Barindead (Dead Alive) X? It's a zombie slapstick horror film, akin to a Shaun of the Dead or Evil Dead. That was apparent from the get-go and it's like watching a Sam Raimi film. It was ridiculous and incredibly gross, but that was the point. The special effects were laughable, the acting was weird, the style of the movie was uncanny, but it all works. If you take this movie too seriously, its not going to appeal to you because it's meant to be a low brow comedy that pokes fun at zombies. I thought it was a very fun movie.

I need recommendations on mainstream horror films that have a lasting effect. A movie that subconsciously stays with you for a few days. I don't want it to be too graphic, ala Cannibal Holocaust, but I want it to have an effect on you after you watch it while not relying too heavily on gore. Scratch horror, I'll take any film, from any genre, that has a lasting effect. Preferably horror, though.

Haha oh dude of COURSE I have seen Dead Alive. How could I not have seen the film that holds the Guinness World Record for most fake blood used in a film? That film had a legendary status before I saw it and when I finally got my hands on it as a teenager I loved every second of it. Are you aware it's a film by Peter Jackson? Man he used to make some great oddball horror-comedies.

But yes I've seen Dead Alive many times. The lawnmower scene at the party remains one of my favorite in the realm of horror.

Mainstream horror films? That's a bit tough man, not many mainstream horror films can achieve that level of dread and subconscious unease. If you aren't opposed to foreign horror I'd recommend the film Martyrs, though it is a bit gorey. Not too gorey, just disturbing. Very good, no, great film. Also I'd recommend maybe The Vanishing (AKA Spoorloos) if you're looking for something more suspenseful and Hitchcockian.

Okay, here's a short list of semi-mainstream films that I think are what you're looking for a lasting effect on you.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (Just flat out fucking disturbing)
Irreversible (French film, is like a terrible car wreck you can't stop watching despite your horror)
Eraserhead (Brings surreal and weird to a new level)
Requiem For a Dream (not technically horror, still one of the most disturbing films)
Session 9 (Really, really fucking creepy low budget and suspenseful film about a cleaning crew in an abandoned mental hospital, a real mental hospital)
The Wicker Man (Original, not the hilarious Nicolas Cage remake)

I don't know, I actually just recommended you a pretty wide variety of horror films with different themes and tones, but I feel like I'm definitely forgetting a film or two I had wanted to mention when I began writing this post.

Have you ever seen any of David Lynch's films?

Lol, for some reason I absolutely knew you've seen it. The lawnmower scene is epic, and massively bloody. I'm not surprised at all that this film holds the record for most use of blood, because it does so to such an extreme, and it's even comical at times. What about the first dinner scene? That was just gross, and don't forget the epic ending. Those special effects hold up today.

This movie reminded me of the recent black comedy Drag Me To Hell, which I'm sure you've seen. If not, I recommend it, especially since you enjoyed this movie.

I've been looking these up, and I have to say I'm liking what I see. Thanks a lot X, I'll definitely be watching some of these. I've heard about some of these, and foreign films are fine with me, in fact, I've just watched a few a couple of days ago. Have you seen the Orphanage? It was alright. How about Haute Tension (Think that was foreign)?

Session 9 looks like something around my alley. I've heard a great deal about Irreversible and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and they look like mental cruelty, maybe too much.

Have you ever seen any of David Lynch's films?
Sadly, I've not

Appreciate the list, X. Oh, and I watched Halloween 2. I loved the opening scene. Good movie, I need to watch it again. Did you get the significance of the white horse?

Like the original "Bullshit" thread, we can jump from topic to topic, right? If so:

Why do so many people shit on Quarantine? For every good review I've gotten about it, I've heard ten bad ones. I'm not saying this movie is great, or an all-time classic, but it's certainly better than a lot of American horror that's come out lately, and although the story is a bit of a reach, it's at least plausible.

I haven't had a chance to see the original (REC), but I do plan on it. Anyone got any honest reviews for that?

Yea, you can jump from topic to topic here, although that wasn't a huge jump.

You have to take reviews with a grain of salt. You can't use them to decide how good a movie is. I've enjoyed a lot of films that were denounced, and vice versa. I liked Quarantine, it was different from the norm. The story was actually fine with me, the only problem I had, personally, was the shaky camera, which did actually help contribute to the film's different, unique style. I can tell you that I wasn't expecting it to end the way it (anticlimactically) did. I liked the film overall.

Rec is supposedly better, which sounds right because not only was it the original (which is more often than not better than any sequels), but it was foreign, which most horror fanatics say is where true horror gems are.

I meant that I didn't read anything else, and felt like boosting my post count. I do that from time to time.

Sweden is where the true horror gems are. They're so good, you barely know they're horror.

As far as REC is concerned, I'm not sure if it's better. I hear it has a better story, but that it also gives too much away. In Quarantine, they show news articles about what happened, but don't actually let the tape play, telling you everything,

I'm still going to see it, just because I'm a movie geek like that, but don't have any hopes or dreams for it.
