Barack Obama Wins The 2012 Presidential Election

Last night, Barack Obama won a second four year term as President of the United States.

Early on in the night, his opponent, Republican candidate Mitt Romney, held a lead over Obama in terms of having more electoral votes. Romney carried the states he was expected to carry, such as virtually all the southern states and most of the mid-west states. Obama carried all the New England states and some mid-west states such as Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Obama carried New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada and the west coast.

Obama's victory ultimately began when the polls began to close out west and the numbers began to roll in. On CNN, the analysts kept bringing attention to battleground states of Florida & Ohio. These states have 29 & 18 electoral votes respectively and attention was kept on these two states as analysts stated Romney needed both states to be able to pull out a win because he just wasn't getting enough electoral votes otherwise.

Votes are still being counted right now as the race was so tight in some states even though Romney conceded the race to Obama last night about 1 am. CNN is reporting that about 90% of the ballots have been counted in Ohio with Obama having a roughly 101,000 vote over Romney. In Florida, 97% of the votes are in with Obama winning by roughly 46,000 votes.

Analysts say that Romney not only needed Florida & Ohio but that he also needed to win some states from Obama that he won last year. It's reported that Republicans were disheartened as they only succeeded in retaking Indiana & North Carolina, two states that are traditionally Republican states in the first place. The disappointment, according to CNN, only increased as Romney lost Pennsylvania, a state he was hoping to win, and Wisconsin, the home state of Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan.

In terms of the popular vote, Obama edged out a pretty narrow victory over Romney. According to CNN, Obama's popular vote tally currently stands a 59,593,936 to Romney's 56,972,497, a difference of a little over 2.6 million votes. Analysts have discussed that this shows a clear divide among Americans as it was one of the closest races in quite a while in terms of the popular vote. Many attribute Romney's strong challenge, in part, to soundly trumping Obama during their first debate.

At any rate, Barack Obama is still President of the United States.
