Austin Aries is the *NEW* TNA World Heavyweight Champion!

It's moments like these they make wrestling great. Who can forget when Eddie defeated Brock Lesnar. Although TNA is not as big as WWE, this could be thought of as on this level, as due to his size and the storyline development of the Roode character, putting the belt on (and the company) on the shoulders of Aries is a momentus occassion for TNA.

Like everyone, I also didn't expect this. So happy that I'm proved wrong. I expected Bobby Roode to keep it until BFG, then lose it to James Storm. I think Austin Aries deserves it.

Props to TNA Impact Wrestling for making things interesting. With Austin Aries winning the TNA Heavyweight Championship, it not only makes the Heavyweight Championship picture interesting, but also the X Division title. Props to Austin Aries, for a nice lengthy X Division title run, here's to your next run. As the TNA World Heavyweight Champion!

Never saw this coming in a million years, but psyched as hell!!!

Man, A Double really deserves it. Great moment for sure. I said a couple times "maybe TNA swerves us and puts the title on Aries", but I fully believed it'd be Roode walking out and heading to BFG to face Storm. This is an awesome turn of events.

Also, I think it's great he won it because it legitimizes the whole X Division cash in. Austin Aries held up the X Division for the better part of a year, and now it's fitting that he's on top of the entire company. Congrats Greatest Man Who Ever Lived!

Best Move they done since Styles winning it a few years ago.

I think Aries will keep his title till No Surrender. I think Roode will get the title back and face Storm in the Main Event at Bound For Glory.

There's a reason most people didn't expect Aries to win, it's because he shouldn't have. Storm should have ended Roode's reign, nobody else.

I like Aries and I have no problem with him being champion but he won because of a gimmick PPV he was on. If TNA wanted him as champion then maybe having him win the BFG Series and then win the title would've been a better choice.

If you think about it it made perfect sense for Aries to win.

He traded in the X-Division title for a shot at the World Title, this is supposed to be allowed to happen from now on for the X-Division champ leading up to Destination X. What better way to legitimise this idea than by putting the title on the X-Division's most over competitor in years. It brings believability that any old X-Division wrestler can do it.

I think another reason they took the belt of Roode was he was running out of credible oppenents to face. Think about it, he'd beaten Storm, Angle, Hardy, RVD, Anderson, Joe (all guys in the BFG series which ties them up) and Sting. The list of new credible opponents was running low. They had to do something to freshen up the World Title scene a bit.

I think that it's great for Austin Aries to win. I think that at Bound for glory it Should be a triple Threat match for the World title between Aries,Storm and Roode sort of like the way it was at wrestlemaniaXX between Benoit, michaels and HHH

Best Move they done since Styles winning it a few years ago.

Really guy? Styles made no Impact on TNA. Didnt draw an audience or mainstream attention. Well I take that back- i think he was once on MTV Made. Roode didn't draw either- but that doesn't mean he can't. Roode has a better look than Styles. So does Aries. TNA can market these guys but they don't. No one knows who any of these guys are or what TNA is. Thats a part of the problem.

So no- it does not make one bit of difference who has the belt.

OK, I realise that he's just been released but I think they should try their best to bring him back. Under his Aries name and not with his crappy "THE Austin Starr" gimmick he could be a big star of the X Division and, given time, the heavyweight division. Maybe they should try and reproduce what he can do in ROH.

Alright, in retrospect, the Austin Starr gimmick was pretty good, this post makes me look borderline mentally handicapped, and there's an exponentially larger list of things I was wrong about. Still, it shows I've liked A Double for a long time and I've long thought he was capable of accomplishing this. That's something, right?

I've not seen the pay-per-view yet. If I'm not wrong, TNA still has their pay-per-views aired on Wednesdays on the UK, so I'll catch it then. Sure, I could have been hunched over my laptop early in the morning, watching a stream, but A) that's illegal, B) that's immoral, and C) I normally reserve that for pornography.

Sorry, Austin. I like you, just not quite enough to *********e over you. Congratulations though.

I have been saying for weeks now that Aries should win @ DX. Holy shit!! He actually won! I didn't think TNA would actually pull the trigger on Aries, but, they did. Good for him! Hopefully, TNA will smarten up and see that these original TNA talents are much better in the main events than former WWE or WCW talents. I just hope Aries isn't a transitional champ. We'll see......

Austin airies being the champion is the best thing TNA have done since Giving Bobby Roode the title several months ago.

Up until then the championship had been ****ed around any ex-WWE/WCW star who they could pin a contract on.

I am happy with this decision as Airies and Roode are the two best things going in the company right now, and I am hoping that moves like this will wein out some of the old and unwanted stars of old.
TNA still has a long way to go, but i am finding it somewhat watchable lately and that can only be a good thing.

AA for the win!

I really doubted that Austin Aries was going to win, I just thought it was going to be another person Bobby Roode would go through. I'm glad that I am wrong. Austin Aries is a great wrestler and he deserves the WHC. Its just that I thought that it would be better for James Storm to win the BFG series and go on to beat Roode at Bound for Glory. James Storm and Bobby Roode actually have a storyline and Aries and Roode didn't, but I could have gone either way.

Definitely something of a surprise, though it's easy to see it coming about with hindsight. After all, it does make sense for TNA to want to give Option C a promising start by having the guy who came up with the idea a win, thus giving the concept some legitimacy right off the bat. Right now, the energy and excitement for this is high but I can't help but wonder how this surprise title run will be in the long run. A lot of people, myself included, said in a recent thread that Storm is really the only guy that makes sense as far as taking the title from Roode. After all, you get the sense that's the feud that TNA had in mind to headline BFG given how they've booked Roode & Storm throughout since just after BFG last year.

It raises interesting questions as to whether or not TNA is still going for Storm vs. Roode for BFG or if they've just had a complete turnaround on that idea. I'm not going to let myself get too excited just yet because there's still the possibility of Aries having a very brief run. Remember James Storm's roughly week long run with the title last year before dropping it to Bobby Roode and how excited everyone was? A potential positive is that this could open up the BFG Series. As I said, TNA has given us the impression that it would be Roode vs. Storm at BFG for the title but IF that's no longer the case, then it could wind up being Aries against anyone in the series.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate that Aries won. I've been a fan of him since he first came to TNA and he's got the talent. I'm just not sure that this means a grand run for Aries right now. That's especially true if the allegations that everyone backstage loves Roode and enjoys working with him while Aries is said to be confrontational and kind of a dick. At any rate, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Great to see a guy, who was very close to retirement finally get his crowning moment. This was one of the greatest moments in tna history. Did you guys here how loud the pop was when he won. Amazing ppv.

Yea the crowd wasnt as hot as I thought it would be throughout the match. It was good, just not "epic", but the pop at the end I think showed that (like me) the crowd both really wanted and also really didnt exect A double to win the title.

I legit marked out hard for this moment. Even my girlfriend, who is brand new to wrestling, was cheering with me. Just an awesome feeling when the ref's hand hit the mat for three. As Impact ended Thursday, I thought there was no chance Aries would win, but as the PPV went on and they showed all these packages, the air felt ripe for a title change. So glad TNA pulled the trigger on an Aries title reign at the right time and didn't let this golden opportunity pass them by. Now hopefully he can hold the title til BFG to defend against either Angle or Joe at the big PPV.

The thing about Roode's reign is that he has seemed to have cheated to win just about all of his defences. I really thought though that Roode needed this victory more than Aries did. And therfore although Aries would have a great showing he would just fall short, on this encounter any way. And then the feud may continue, and possibly Aries would take the belt as TNA loves a good shock surpirse like with Storm's win last year. So I thought they were capable of giving Aries the belt, I just didn't think they would pull the trigger so soon.

In saying that though, I hope Aries doesn't drop the belt straight back to Roode this Thursday and allows Aries to run with the ball. I have this feeling and it's a positive one that TNA weren't planning on this (Aries was a heel not too long ago) but from the reaction that Aries gets that they decided to go with what the fans want, which was firstly a face turn and then a title run which could very well pay off for TNA.

This throws everything out now and although TNA has been really good the last 2 months, it looks like it's about to get even better.
I see people mention Roode cheating to win all the time as if it makes him look weak and I just dont understand why people think that. Faces need clean wins that's what they do but a heel cheats it's as simple as that.. Rick Flair did a whole lot of cheating to win and when he had the horsemen behind him he usually had help to win and it didn't make him any less a legend. I even saw a match one time in the territory days where Flair got pinned only to have the promoter come out and change the decision claiming the other wrestler Bulldog Bob Brown had thrown Flair over the top rope earlier and should have been disqualified for that.

Roode is a heel and that's what heels do they cheat so I don't get the whole it makes him look weak thing. I watched WWE for a very short time because of Booker T being there and his wife Sharmel almost always interfered and helped him win but that didn't make him less legitimate of a wrestler as he's respected as a great star from the past. For years most heels that had managers won matches due to their managers or valets helping them win and many of them are considered legends and even some of the valets and managers are considered legends as well.

Absolutely exstatic.

See, this doesn't stop TNA from having Roode face Storm at the PPV. In a way they just killed two birds with one stone.

1. They got a fresh new Champion who everybody loves and a defense at BFG opens the chance for a great match that we've never seen before, at least on this stage.

2. We still get Storm vs Roode and Storm's revenge, only it's not for the belt. That won't ruin the match at all even though the pay-off for Storm fans won't be as sweet.

I really didn't think TNA would do this. I thought Aries is gonna be the "next" guy. Boy was I wrong. TNA nailed this on the head and is creating ANOTHER solid Main Eventer, ANOTHER amazing character, ANOTHER great wrestler. First we had Roode, then Storm, then Bully and now Aries with more to come I am sure.

Shit am I glad to be a TNA fan at the moment.

This was a great moment for TNA and I have fucking marked out for the first time since Lockdown 2010. But for anyone thinking this will be a long title run, it ain't going to happen. I know what avenue they're going down and it's the Sting vs Hollywood Hogan build from 1997 all over again, just with different people.

Lex Luger won the World Title at around September in 1997 and held the title for one week before Hogan won the title back in screwy fashion. That then still led to the inevitable Hogan vs Sting at Starrcade 1997. I still have no doubt James Storm and Roode will be headlining BFG for the World Title, but still, this is a fantastic moment. Fucking love you Austin!

I gotta say I was watching this last night and Roode started doing his stuff where he was going to cheat to win and I started to get pissed because I totally wanted Aries to win and he kept doing in then Aries got the win and looking back I think its great the Roode was trying to cheat because it made it that much better in the end. So mad props to creative for writting it up that way and dang did I mark out when Aries got the win I dont like to much of what TNA does but I still watch it because I love wrestling but what they did last night had to be one of their best moments ever and the crowed went nuts also. Thats something they can show for years as a great moments in TNA history and its something they can use now to help their company grow to another level, not WWE level but to a higher level then where they are now. Not to pleased with the whole PPV but this match was solid great all around and dang I loved it lol.

There's a reason most people didn't expect Aries to win, it's because he shouldn't have. Storm should have ended Roode's reign, nobody else.

Considering the aftermath of fan appeal, I think TNA knew exactly what they were doing. It's just like CM Punk at Money in the Bank one year ago, on a much smaller scale. Austin Aries walked into Destination X, a PPV designed for his kind and was the eyes on underdog. Just like CM Punk walked into Chicago at MITB and was the underdog against Cena. Austin Aries NEEDED to win here.

James Storm didn't have to be the one to do shit. That's just a silly fan boy being ignorant. Storm doing it would've been predictable, and wouldn't nearly have gotten the response Aries has gotten. TNA made a great decision here, and I'm happy that they did. Roode had literally NOBODY else to face for the title that could have worked. He had beaten everyone there was as a former Champion.

He defeated Anderson, Hardy, Angle, RVD, Sting, AJ Styles, and even James Storm. He had the numbers of past World champions and none of them would've been able to win because he expected guys like him. Austin Aries, on the other hand, was a young gun with a lot of uncharted hunger. He was a fresh and new challenge. A challenge that mirrored his own success in many respects. Austin Aries was THE guy to beat Roode. Nobody else would've worked.

Well I am pissed at myself for thinking this wouldn't happen because damn it I sure was wrong. I'm extremely happy with the way this happened, Aries not losing his X-Division title but relinquishing it to get a shot at the World Title and winning it, that's gonna be something people remember for a long time. Aries is one of the best talents on the roster and the fact that he came in and ended the longest TNA WHC reign ever is huge.

You really can"t complain about Roode losing aside from the fact that many like
myself wanted to see Storm win it back from him. But that being said I'm still very happy that Aries did it, and Roode had one of the best runs in company history so it's hard to complain about his losing.
I think this was a brilliant move by TNA and I can't wait to see where they go with this next.

Not even your cumbersome English pessimism can make this out to seem like a bad idea Jake my old chap. Just because Roode/Storm have a blow off down the road doesn't mean that Roode can't have a detour on the way with Aries. Aries had way too much momentum and was way too over to not win here, it would have been far more detrimental to his character. TNA just solidified Aries as a main event fixture and in an essence made him a "TNA star", and not just a "Oh hey, Kurt Angle? He used to be in WWE right?" star. The blow-off and big money ending for Roode and Storm will most certainly take place, but that's not until October which is basically an eternity to the modern wrestling fan's attention span, did you really want to see months of more Roode title defenses against guys you know aren't going to win like Sting or Mr. Anderson? Now that Aries is in the mix they have the opportunity to even insert him into the Roode/Storm mix ala Benoit/HBK/HHH at Wrestlemania XX if they wanted to. This just gives them so much more to do now with what they have and the upsides far outweigh any downsides man.

This really was a bit of a mark-out moment for myself, I've been a fan of Austin's for several years and seen him go from the top of ROH to working these incredibly small crowds of maybe 100-200 fans not even 14 months ago to now being TNA World champ and probably the most over guy on the entire roster. And all of it was due to his hard work and the natural reaction the fans had to him because they saw his hard work and his personality and loved him for it. It really is that simple sometimes in wrestling, to find a talent that is works hard and has some flair or personality to him and just let the fans latch onto him. Kudos to TNA for pulling the trigger here and giving Aries the belt, because after all the talk about how they were making Destination X a yearly thing where the X-Division champ could cash in his title for a shot at the World title, it made this a must-win for Aries in a sense. Imagine if the WWE had their first Money in the Bank winner loser his cash-in match? It would have sunk the entire concept before it got a chance to start, and that's what would have happened here as well.

So glad to see all of these guys I've grown to love over this last decade watching indy wrestling come to the biggest heights of success in their careers yet like Austin Aries, CM Punk, and Daniel Bryan. It reinforces the age old value that if you put enough hard work into something you love you can succeed at the highest levels and that's just some feel good life-affirming shit right there everybody can latch onto. Look at that, from pro wrestling to philosophy in three paragraphs.

Austin Aries spoke with Busted Open today about his TNA World Title win and more. Check out the highlights:

On his emotions after winning the TNA World Title: “It was great. I don’t know if you can sum it up in a sentence or two, but a lot of emotions kind of hit me. The culmination of not only my year in TNA, twelve years in the wrestling business, but really just a lifelong love affair with the wrestling business. To think back to the early days of my childhood and getting into professional wrestling and to think where I am some twenty five years later, it’s hard to put that all in perspective, but I’m sure in the coming days and weeks, it will start to sink in a little more. It was a great feeling and a great moment. The energy coming out the Impact Zone, the response I have seen so far in the wrestling community has been overwhelming. I’m glad I can be somebody that can help create a buzz right now in this business.”

On if winning the TNA World title was the highlight of his career: “Yeah, I have to say it ranks right up there. I was always one of those people who never had a favorite this or a favorite that. This right now, with everything that went along with it and the culmination of it, I think it ranks right up there with the greatest moment so far of my career.”

On his year in TNA: “When I walked in there, I had come to a decision that I wasn’t really happy with the opportunities I was getting in the wrestling business. I felt I was at a certain level as a performer and a competitor and if I wasn’t going to get that opportunity or get treated in a way that was fitting for someone of a guy with my talents, then I decided it was time to do something else. I’ve always been a guy that did his own thing, and set all my own rules, and that was a decision that I made, but when TNA offered that opportunity, I had to take it. It was a great opportunity to come back and have a second chance at a place where you don’t always have a second chance at. I didn’t look back and had nothing to lose at that point and I said ‘here I am, this is me. Either take it or leave it.’ But I can be a money guy in this business and in this company and so far I have proven that and it’s been great.”

On fans getting behind him: “Part of that overwhelming reaction and that moment, it could not have been created had Bobby Roode not had such a successful run as champion the last 7 or 8 months, and the job he has done as World Champion I don’t think can be taken for granted or give him enough accolades on what he’s done. That helped create that special moment last night. I just try to go out there and be myself. My job is to go out there and entertain people and get a reaction out of them. Make them care, one way or the other. I guess just go out there and be myself and if you love me that’s great and if you hate me that’s great too. As long as you care when I walk out that curtain or when you see me on camera, that’s all I care about. I think people can gravitate to someone who’s authentic, who know who he is, who’s comfortable with who he is, who goes out there and expects a lot out of himself. Makes some boisterous claims but backs them up. I also think my passion and love for this business is something I hope translates. It’s been an interesting ride going in there obviously I was new to them and maybe it took them a while for them to warm up to me, but right now each and every time I step out there, it seems like the Aries Army just keeps growing.”

On fans calling it a great moment for TNA and wrestling as a whole: “It’s touching and I’m glad they feel that way. I think that over the years and I’m a wrestling fan too and there have been moments and you go back to the night Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero became wrestling champions. You go back to when CM Punk became champion. The night Daniel Bryan became champion. AJ Styles getting the opportunity in TNA to be the man. I think as a wrestling fan, when you see performers or colleagues succeed and you know they are the type of people that have the same love and passion and respect for the business that you do, that’s what you want to see. You want to see those people succeed because you know the right people are making it to the top and then it’s our job to make sure the wrestling industry thrives and continues to grow. I feel like we are primed for the next boom in wrestling. If you look at the two major companies, you got the right guys in the right positions. I think with some good thought behind it we can really create a buzz and get people interested in the mainstream and the masses get interested in wrestling again.”

On Hulk Hogan being behind him: “Initially I didn’t deal with Hulk a lot.We didn’t have a lot of interaction. But I hear a lot of the criticisms within the company and outside the company about his role. My dealings with him have been great. He has a really good mind for the business. I don’t think people understand that. He was one of the most successful performers of all time in this business for a reason. It went beyond just his charisma, his look and all these other factors. He has a great mind for it and I appreciate that he had confidence in me and everyone else in the company had the confidence in me.”

On the X Division: “I think if you look at the pay per view last night there was some quality talent that was on the PPV. I imagine some of those guys will continue to be a part of Impact Wrestling moving forward. I think if you look out there, there is a lot of talent who are not under contract to another company or soon will not be under contract to another company, who we definitely want to take a look at and see if they have something to bring to TNA Impact Wrestling. We tried to do the reboot of the X division last year and we tried to infuse some new talent into it. Just through some circumstances and some injuries and some departures, I don’t think it sustained itself as they had hoped. So I think there will be more effort going forward. When you couple that with the Gut Check concept too, it’s another tool to infuse new talent. Kenny King and Mason Andrews and Rubix, those are all guys who I think if you continue to give opportunities too, will grow with the company and become guys who will definitely be entertaining in the X division and beyond.”

I agree I wish him all the best in his current reign! and you never know if the ratings rise with him as Champ then we might see him with the belt longer than we think :)

What do you think, is this his career highlight thus far?

i think he will possibly have the world heavyweight title till bound for glory when he drops it to one of three people James storm Jeff hardy or possibly and this might happen ay hardcore justice Bobby Roode.

But he will be with the title for a little reign cause hogan will give him at least one title match before Bobby invokes the ever so famous and stupid rematch clause
