Excellence of Execution
I've decided that the Aaron Rodgers for Brett Favre trade has actually benefited both teams...IF:

1) The Green Bay Packers can keep their team intact for the next two or three years, and Aaron Rodgers can develop into a Top 10 QB in the league.

2) Brett Favre plays this year and/or next and then retires. The longer Brett plays (assuming he plays at a high level), the worse the trade is for the Green Bay Packers, and the better for the Jets.

3) The Packers can make playoff appearances for this and the next two or three years, and eventually vie for a Superbowl, while the Jets continue to improve their record every year, eventually winding up in the playoffs.

Why?

I think it's obvious the Jets have made out better so far, as they only need one more win to equal last year's total. Brett Favre's addition (as well as other additions) have made the Jets a legitimate team, and a possible playoff contender.

So, it's up to the Packers and Aaron Rodgers to even out the trade. Aaron Rodgers has proven himself a solid QB, but not yet up to even close to Favre's level. Yet. The question is if Rodgers can lead his team to the playoffs and some success. If the answer is yes, then the Packers have their QB of the future, and a good team to help break him in.

But, if Rodgers can't do that, then the Packers missed out. Because Brett Favre could have led this team to a Superbowl. Will Rodgers come close?

Only time will tell.

What are your thoughts on how the trade has played out thus far?

Sly, I find myself agreeing with you. Although Rodgers has been mediocre thus far, he has definately showed moments of brilliance which means with experience and a solid offensive line, he will develop into a good quarterback. I think if Green Bay is looking to the future, than letting Favre go was a wise decision. Now they have a player in Rodgers to build a team around and they can coordinate their draft picks over the next few years to fit in with him.

The Jets made out pretty well, too. Lets not overlook that the Jets have performed less than stellar over the past decade, give or take a few above .500 seasons. They are in desperate need of a "right now" fix simply to boost moral. They definately found that in Favre.

Brett Farve and the Jets are 5-3 but from what I have seen he has had 3 good games tops. His opener against the Dolphins, the game against the Cardinals and the game against the Bills last weekend. The win against the Chiefs was because of Leon Washington as Farve threw 3 interceptions in that game and the running game had to get them out of that hole. He lost to the Patriots at home and played badly against a horrid pass defense in san Diego. Aaron Rodgers is progressing and the Packers can make the playoffs if they can jump start their season with a win. Rodgers is not mediocre. He has only had about 2 bad games (at Tampa and vs Dallas) You can have good games and still lose (against Titans last week and against the Falcons when the defense let them down) I still believe that Rodgers is like Steve Young and that he will eventually mature into a great QB. Remember Young stumbled too a little before becoming a winner. The Jets are a team that does good every other year...last year they sucked, this year good, next year they will go back to sucking. Its the pattern that I have noticed about them and its not a healthy one regardless of whether Farve is on the team.
