Jimmy Eat World takes the early lead!!!!

Seriously, before you go vote for Nirvana (blech), please listen to some JEW, first. This is truly an underrated band by far. Jimmy Eat World is my fave of all-time, and you will not be disappointed when you listen to their catalog of work. Happy listening:

This one is difficult for me. On one hand I grew up listening to Nirvana. On the other hand here comes a band in the last couple of years in Jimmy Eat World That really owns ass too. Nirvana symbolized what the early Nineties was in the music world. Whereas Jimmy Eat World is the Definition of this new wave of Pop/Rock music. To be honest I like a song I can sing along too. Nirvana Only allows a couple songs like that. Whereas Jimmy Eat World has a whole catalog of singable songs. So for that fact i went with Jimmy Eat World. Nirvana really kicks ass though too.

I voted for Nirvana on sheer influence and mainstream popularity, but if Jimmy Eat World takes this, it would be an upset of epic proportions. J.E.W. wasn't supposed to defeat Collective Soul in the prelims, but to oust the #1 seed as the $64 seed would be amazing.

The idea of Nirvana going out early and blowing the entire bracket up should garner votes on its own, for better or for worse.

Jimmy Eat World is a good band. But Nirvana's influence on basically every band that came after them has to outweight any good music J.E.W. has put out.

Plus, Nirvana just rocks.

Why? Just because on band did it first doesn't necessarily make them the best. In fact, wouldn't it be more likely for someone to come along and capitalize on an original's weaknesses? The argument that they are the original and and influenced everyone prior to them is absolute bollacks.

Pain is one of my favorite songs... well ever. I do really love Jimmy Eat World I remember seeing them a couple of years ago and they are a really good live band, they write solid albums, but I just cant look past Nirvana on this one. I probably listen to Jimmy Eat World a lot more than I do to Nirvana but I cant pick Jimmy Eat World on that basis alone... Nirvana's influence on Modern Rock is almost unmeasurable, the fact that Kurt killed himself is always going to make them probably more legendary than they should be. This was a genuinely tough decision but I really have to go for Nirvana on this one.

Being the first person to do something, that ALLOWED other people to do something and TAUGHT them how to do something is important. I can assure you that J.E.W. would sound different had Nirvana never showed up.

When evaluating anything in hindsight, it is important to look at the consequences. The consequences of Nirvana's music are amazing, whereas Jimmy Eat World hasn't really changed the face of music.

Anyway, why am I wasting my time when you have voted for other bands based on influence COUNTLESS times before.

So obviously, you think that influence DOES matter. And it is obvious that Nirvana has had a cultural influence that JEW will never be able to match. So Nirvana wins, and you have admitted that it is something that HAS to be looked to in determining a "winner".

First of all, props on doing your homework and finding the dirt on me.

However, I was not debating Nirvana's overwhelming victory in cultural influence. Jimmy can never hold a candle to any kind of cultural influence that Nirvana has. However, the quality of music that JEW puts out is brilliant, entertaining, and timeless. In my opinion, the MUSIC that JEW performs outweighs the cultural influence of Nirvana.

Obviously, cultural influence plays a part and SHOULD play a part in the tournament. But to give them the benefit of the doubt because they were the first is misguided, from my perspective.

To me this isn't even a contest. Nirvana is miles ahead of Jimmy Eat World. They revolutionized the Grunge scene in the early 90s, and started a musical revolution that helped kill hair metal and bring a newer, edgier kind of musical style to the mainstream audiences across the world. That alone puts Nirvana over Jimmy Eat World, who I think is a decent band but doesn't compare to Nirvana. Now, I've said over and over again that I think Nirvana is probably the most overrated band ever, but even I can't argue about the influence they've had over most modern rock bands since 1991. Their influence can't even be debated, it's blatantly obvious.

Nirvana take this hands down. They took the grunge scene and made it mainstream, at a great personal cost to Cobain.

They wrote songs that people could relate to and even now, Nevermind still sounds fresh and new 15 years on. Plus, nearly every band out there now cite Nirvana as a great influence on thier music(with bands like Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Queen)

On top of that, it helped the career of one Dave Grohl, whoo seemingly cannot do a thing wrong when it comes to making music, that guy has been involved with so many bands in the past 10 years, like QOTSA, Tenascious D and of course, Foo Fighters.

Jimmy Eat World I have never rated, when they had a few songs, I thought, meh, they sound different but nothing special. But saying they influenced the new pop/rock trend is laughable. Bands like Oasis and Greenday took rock music (rock in its many forms, granted) and made it popular again with songs about excess and summertime.

Well, Jimmy, you gave it a good fight. Props to everyone who made the right decision and voted Jimmy.

Hopefully Nirvana is gone by the next round.
