Saving Mr. Banks

Release Date: December 13, 2013

When Walt Disney's daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers' "Mary Poppins," he made them a promise one that he didn't realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney's plans for the adaptation. For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn't budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp. It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

Looks like cookie-cutter Oscar bait, but truth be told, I wouldn't mind Hanks receiving another nomination or win, if the performance lives up to expectations.

Out Of The Furnace

Release Date: November 27, 2013

From the critically-acclaimed writer and director of Crazy Heart comes a gripping and gritty dramatic thriller about fate, circumstance, and justice. Russell (Bale) and his younger brother Rodney (Affleck) live in the economically-depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives. But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother is lured into one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast - a mistake that will almost cost him everything. Once released, Russell must choose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother.

Happy to see Christian Bale step away from Bruce Wayne/Batman. And unless I'm missing something, with the exception of The Fighter, this is Bale's first non-Dark Knight film in a while. The Fighter happened in there along the way, but for the life of me I can't remember the release year.

Usually, I would wait for Mitch to post the trailer, but I saw this earlier and it blew my mind.

12 Years A Slave

Steve McQueen's Twelve Years a Slave stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (of Serenity, Kinky Boots, Children of Men, American Gangster, Salt) as Solomon Northup, a man living in New York during the mid-1800s who is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the deep south.

This film looks phenomenal and looks to be a big contender at awards shows. Ejofor looks great at Northup and it's nice to see him get play as the lead. The supporting cast is also excellent, with Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Paul Giamatti, Benedict Cumberbatch and other talented actors. If this film is half as good as McQueen's previous films, then this could be a serious contender for Best Picture at the Oscars.

Also, a teaser trailer has been released for the new Nelson Mandela biopic featurig Idris Elba.

Yeah, I remember seeing the trailer for 12 Years A Slave on the side of recommended videos, when I was looking for the trailers in the last post, but I forgot to click on it. Looks great, and going by the trailer, I'm guessing Brad Pitt won't have a major role, because most of the focus is on Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Sarah Paulson, and Paul Giamatti. Still, lots of potential in that trailer, and I can't wait to see it.

Idris Elba could have a shot an Oscar for Best Actor, because Long Walk To Freedom is supposed to hit theaters in late November. That's Oscar season, and I'm hoping Elba will knock it out of the park with a great performance.

I was going to make a thread about this, but Paranormal Activity 5 was supposed to be a 2013 release, so I'll put this in here:

Paramount is looking to push the release of "Paranormal Activity 5," the latest installment in its lucrative horror franchise, until next year, multiple individuals close to the studio told TheWrap.

The film is currently scheduled to open Oct. 25.

One of the individuals said Paramount had already decided to move "Paranormal" while another cautioned that the studio was still debating the move. That individual said that the studio is looking at the same weekend as "The Devil Inside," which opened January 6 last year.

Also read: 'The Purge': Why Doesn't Everyone Make $3M Movies That Open to $36M?

All four previous "Paranormal" films opened in the fall, the last three in October. Along with "Saw," Paranormal is a paragon of the microbudget horror genre, with each film in the series grossing at least $140 million at the box office while costing no more than $5 million to produce.

Several studios have rushed to capitalize on the potential of inexpensive horror films. Universal's "The Purge" is already one of the summer's surprise hits while "The Conjuring," which opens this weekend, is likely to hand Warner Bros. and New Line another.

It remains unclear why Paramount is strongly considering a delay for "Paranormal Activity 5."

"They really like the director, but they are second guessing themselves," one individual close to the studio told TheWrap.

The most recent "Paranormal" film was the weakest performer in the series, but it still grossed $140.8 million. The lone horror movie scheduled to open within a month of the existing date for "Paranormal" is "Insidious Chapter Two," which debuts Sept. 13.

Horror films do play well in January as a change of pace from the endless stream of awards-focused dramas. Both “Mama” and “Texas Chainsaw 3D,” horror films released in January, opened in the top spot at the box office earlier this year.

Two other horror films are already slated for January of 2013, "Devil's Due" and "Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes."

I'm not a big fan of the PA films, but this could be good news for the franchise overall. Paranormal Activity 4 was terrible, so giving the PA franchise some breathing room until 2014 could help things.

Remember how the Saw franchise started out hot? Then what happened: they started releasing a Saw film year after year, rushing everything with the goal of churning out a Saw film every year. The franchise suffered, the quality of the films suffered, and the box office profits suffered. Paranormal Activity is another popular low budget horror franchise, and if they don't turn the corner now, they could easily suffer the same fate as Saw. Paranormal Activity 4 wasn't a flop, but as the article points out, PA 4 suffered a huge drop-off in box office profits, claiming the stat for the weakest performance in the franchise.

Anyway, 2014, 2015, or 2016. I don't care. Hopefully they'll tweak PA's predictable formula in the next film. You know, 40-50 minutes of boring security camera footage bullshit, invisible demon attacks every now and then, and a suspenseful finale that might last 10 minutes. This formula is beyond tiresome and stale now.

Don Jon

Release Date: September 27, 2013

Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a strong, handsome, good old fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to "pull" a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn't compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a bright, beautiful, good old fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she's determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Joesph Gordon-Levitt's pet project could be something to keep an eye out for. Levitt's been on fire in the past couple of years Inception, 50/50, The Dark Knight Rises, Premium Rush, Lincoln, and recently Looper. Hesher happened in there somewhere, but I wasn't too crazy about it. And although it happened in 2009 or 2010 (I forget), but he was fantastic in (500) Days Of Summer.

New trailer for the Mandela biopic, extended trailer for Kick-Ass 2, and an extended, but boring trailer for Gravity:

So the sequel to the Fright Night remake is going to be called a New Blood, and it's going to be a straight-to-video release on October 1. Of course, none of the original cast members are returning, and it looks like they're ignoring the storylines in the 2011 remake:

Directed by Eduardo Rodriguez, the sequel to the 2011 reboot introduces Jaime Murray as Gerri (first look above), who is Charlie (Will Payne) and his horror obsessed friend “Evil” Ed’s (Chris Waller) young attractive professor. When the new villainess vamp turns Ed, Charlie seeks out Peter Vincent, the infamous vampire hunter (well, he plays one on TV) who is in Romania filming his show “Fright Night,” to teach him how to take down Gerri before she gets to Amy, who’s blood will cure Gerri of spending eternity as a vampire.

American Hustle

Release Date: December 13, 2013- limited release/Christmas Day wide release

The story of a con artist and his partner in crime, who were forced to work with a federal agent to turn the tables on other cons, mobsters, and politicians - namely, the volatile mayor of impoverished Camden, New Jersey.

More Oscar bait, but I love the cast here. But something bothers me about Amy Adams. She's often praised as being one of the elite actresses in Hollywood, but I don't see it. She's not bad, but I don't think she's that good.

Bad Grandpa

Release Date: October 25, 2013

86 year-old Irving Zisman is on a journey across America with the most unlikely companions, his 8 year-old Grandson Billy in "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.” This October, the signature Jackass character Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) and Billy (Jackson Nicoll) will take movie audiences along for the most insane hidden camera road trip ever captured on camera.

Along the way Irving will introduce the young and impressionable Billy to people, places and situations that give new meaning to the term childrearing. The duo will encounter male strippers, disgruntled child beauty pageant contestants (and their equally disgruntled mothers), funeral home mourners, biker bar patrons and a whole lot of unsuspecting citizens. Real people in unreal situations, making for one really messed up comedy.

Wasn't a big fan of the last Jackass film (the 3D gimmick was worthless), so I'll probably wait to watch this one at home, if I decide to watch it.

Lone Survivor

Release Date: December 27, 2013 limited release/January 10, 2014

LONE SURVIVOR, starring Mark Wahlberg, tells the story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative who are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Based on The New York Times bestseller, this story of heroism, courage and survival directed by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) also stars Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana. LONE SURVIVOR will be released by Universal Pictures in platform engagements on Friday, December 27, 2013, and will go wide on Friday, January 10, 2014.

I still can't believe some people are shitting on Peter Berg for Battleship. Ugh, some of the comments I've read on YouTube on other places :disappointed: For fuck's sake people, let it go. He's not Michael Bay.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Lone Survivor, but I can see why they would dump a film like this in the dead zone known as January. Hard sell. And Mark Wahlberg hasn't been Mr. Consistency in...well years. Wahlberg's quality of films range from mediocre, to barely above average, to complete shit (terrified of what Transformers 4 will be) now a days. Still, I will take a chance on this in theaters.

All Is Lost

Release Date: October 18, 2013 (limited)

Academy Award-nominated writer/director J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) takes the helm for this tense adventure drama about a man (Robert Redford) who must fight for survival after being lost at sea.

I haven't been a fan of the later stages of Robert Redford's career, so as usual, I'll wait for this one at home. But I'll be happy to support J.C. Chandor, because he was screwed over at the Oscars a few years ago.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty

Release Date: December 25, 2013

In this comedic adaptation of James Thurber's short story, Ben Stiller stars as Walter, a milquetoast proofreader for a magazine publishing firm. Walter is constitutionally incapable of standing up for himself, so he retreats into his fantasy world, where he is heroic, poised, self-assured, and the master of his fate. Stiller directs from a script by Steven Conrad, with Kristen Wiig, Patton Oswalt, and Shirley MacLaine rounding out the starring cast.

Hmmm. I think I saw this trailer before The Wolverine a few days ago, and it really caught my attention. It looks like Stiller is taking a more serious approach with a touch of comedy mixed in. This sort of approach really worked for Will Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction, and I'll be rooting for Stiller here. Although, he should be careful about getting too serious in the future, because that didn't work out for Jim Carrey (i.e. that pile of dogshit The Number 23). And yeah, this might be the last quality film from Stiller, because after looking over his IMDB profile, he's going to star in another one of those shitty Night At The Museum films in 2015.

Fright Night 2: New Blood

Release Date: October 1, 2013 (straight-to-video)

Directed by Eduardo Rodriguez, the sequel to the 2011 reboot introduces “Dexter” star Jaime Murray as Gerri (who looks crazy hot in the film), who is Charlie (Will Payne) and his horror obsessed friend “Evil” Ed’s (Chris Waller) young attractive professor.

Well it's a leaked trailer, so I'm sure it'll be gone soon enough, but I'll post the real trailer whenever Fox decides to release it.

I saw this last night, and I watched it a few times throughout the day. Usually, I TRY to keep an open, positive mind about things, but man this trailer is shit. In Fright Night 2 1988, Ragsdale and McDowall returned to reprise their roles. Plus, Julie Carmen was a fantastic replacement for the primary antagonist as Regine. And I know a lot of Fright Night fans didn't enjoy the remake, but Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin did a fine job with their portrayals of Charley and Jerry. So yeah, right off the bat, that's something that puts an uneasy feeling in my stomach, because none of the original cast members are returning.

Everything about this trailer screams mediocre and possibly shitty straight-to-video horror sequel. As I said in an earlier post, New Blood is ignoring the stroylines in the 2011 remake, so in a lot of ways, you could say this film is a remake of the 1988 sequel.

They don't reveal it in the synopsis or the trailer, but you have to assume Gerri (nice play on words for Jerry) is Jerry Dandridge's sister, and she's seeking revenge on Charley for killing her brother. It should be something similar to the plot of 1988 sequel, where Julie Carmen's Regine goes after Charley for killing Jerry.

But that's where the conundrum comes from. I'm guessing Gerri is going to be the first vampire Charley faces, because going by the synopsis, this should be a complete remake of the 1988 sequel. By all rights, this couldn't be a sequel to the 2011 remake, because Charley killed Ed.

Either way, I'll give it a try. I see a lot of people are making a big fuss out of Jaime Murray being in the starring role, but I'll have to wait and see the movie for myself, because I'm unfamiliar with Murray's work.

Paradise

Release Date: October 18, 2013 (limited)

Diablo Cody makes her directorial debut with this tale of a young woman (Julianne Hough) whose brush with death pushes her to turn her back on her strict religious upbringing and head to Las Vegas to find her true self. Russell Brand and Olivia Spencer co-star in the Lionsgate release.

I've always thought Juno was horribly, horribly overrated, and Cody was lucky enough to touch on the hot topic issue of teen pregnancy. But I LOVED Jennifer's Body, and Cody's work on the screenplay for that film.

I'll probably give this a chance at home somewhere down the line, because I honestly can't stand Russell Brand. He ruined Get Him To The Greek for me, and I can't bring myself to watch any of his films in theaters again.

Seventh Son

Release Date: October 18, 2013

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin, centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory. In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. Now he has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man's only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.

Could be a mediocre fantasy/action adventure film, but I usually enjoy anything with Jeff Bridges (he almost saved R.I.P.D.), so I'll probably watch this one in theaters.

Her

Release Date: November 20, 2013

Spike Jonze takes the helm for this comedy about a withdrawn writer (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls in love with his computer's highly advanced operating system.

Rooney Mara's in this, so I'll see Her for sure.

You could make a serious argument for Phoenix needing to win the Oscar for Best Actor this year, but he was going up against Daniel Day Lewis for Lincoln, so he never had a shot. Her has a unique premise, and maybe Phoenix will have a better shot at winning the Oscar for Best Actor in 2014.

Enough Said

Release Date: September 20, 2013 (limited)

A divorced and single parent, Eva (Julia Louis Dreyfus) spends her days enjoying work as a masseuse but dreading her daughter's impending departure for college. She meets Albert (James Gandolfini) - a sweet, funny and like-minded man also facing an empty nest. As their romance quickly blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne (Catherine Keener), her new massage client. Marianne is a beautiful poet who seems "almost perfect" except for one prominent quality: she rags on her ex-husband way too much. Suddenly, Eva finds herself doubting her own relationship with Albert as she learns the truth about Marianne's Ex. ENOUGH SAID is a sharp, insightful comedy that humorously explores the mess that often comes with getting involved again.

I have a hard time picturing Gandolfini in a romantic comedy, but this trailer has its moments. I don't expect anything great or good from Enough Said, but I'm hoping for some good laughs along the way.

The Monuments Men

Release Date: December 18, 2013

Writer/director George Clooney adapts author Robert M. Edsel's book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History to tell the incredible true story of the seven art historians and museum curators who went behind enemy lines during World War II on a mission to recover some of the world's greatest works of art. As the Third Reich begins to topple, the German army receives explicit orders to destroy every work of art in their possession. Determined to prevent 1000 years of culture from going up in flames, American President Franklin Delano Roosevelt assembles an unlikely task force comprised entirely of art experts to enter Germany, recover the works of art, and ensure they are returned to their rightful owners. With little knowledge of modern weapons or warfare tactics, the ragtag squadron successfully makes their way into enemy territory before realizing they've got their work cut out for them. Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, John Goodman, and Jean Dujardin star.

More Oscar bait here.

I would be shocked if Monuments Men doesn't receive numerous Oscar nominations, including a Best Picture nod. This cast with this story? Yeah, it's almost a surefire guarantee.

New trailer for Ender's Game:

Well I've been seeing this on TV for a few days now. Judging by the trailer, it's exactly like what Mitch posted on here awhile back, which is exactly like Pitch Black.

I get the same feeling carbon copy feeling. To add to that, the more and more I see of Riddick, the more unimpressive it looks. There's a reason they're sneaking it into September, and not putting it up against the other big name films this summer.

Yep. Instead of it being just Cole Hauser as a bounty hunter, they all are now. Maybe that's their ploy in this movie. Make you like Riddick even more because he's the only likable character, while the rest are there for money.

Parkland

Release Date: September 20, 2013 (limited)

PARKLAND recounts the chaotic events that occurred in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963, the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Written and directed by Peter Landesman and produced by Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, Bill Paxton and Exclusive Media's Nigel Sinclair and Matt Jackson, PARKLAND is the ferocious, heart-stopping and powerful true story never told of the people behind the scenes of one of the most scrutinized events in history.

I always give Zac Efron credit for trying, because he gives a maximum effort for all his performances. But I've never seen the potential others see. More recently, Efron was surrounded by Nicole Kidman, John Cusack, and Matthew McConaughey in The Paperboy, and the movie itself was still shit, and Efron deserves a lot of the blame for that.

Still, I'll give Parkland a try in theaters, and I'm not 100% sold by looking at the trailer, but others are predicting some Oscar nods for this one. The source material might help, because JFK's assassination is one of the most talked about events in all of history, and it's a event that'll be dissected and discussed until the end of time. But when I look at this trailer, I just see another forgettable drama that'll get lost in the mix, when Oscar season rolls around.

The Book Thief

Release Date: November 15, 2013

Based on the beloved international bestselling book, The Book Thief tells the story of an extraordinary, spirited young girl sent to live with a foster family in WWII Germany. Intrigued by the only book she brought with her, she begins collecting books as she finds them. With the help of her new parents and a secret guest under the stairs, she learns to read and creates a magical world that inspires them all.

This horribly generic trailer makes The Book Thief look like a Hallmark Channel movie, but I wouldn't be surprised if this one snagged some Oscar votes.

Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters

Release Date: February 14, 2014

Rose Hathaway (Deutch) is a Dhampir: half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story.

I know this is a 2014 film, but this teaser for Blood Sisters really caught my eye. I love a good vampire flick, and Blood Sisters could be a sleeper hit next year.

And then there's this. This little teaser for an upcoming JJ Abrams project surfaced a few days ago. Some people swear it's teaser to help promote a book by Abrams. others believe it's about Star Wars, a Lost movie, and I've seen some, wild off base predictions including Aquaman and Cloverfield 2. Me? I have no idea what it is. Let the speculation begin.

+1

Release Date: September 20, 2013 (limited)

Three college friends hit the biggest party of the year, where a mysterious phenomenon disrupts the night, quickly descending into a chaos that challenges their friendships -- and whether they can stay alive.

Rhys Wakefield delivered one of the better performances in The Purge (he was the creepy prep school kid, who couldn't stop smiling), but I'm kind of burnt on time travel flicks this year. Still, I like the concept, but I'll probably have to watch this at home, because I highly doubt I'll find any showings for an IFC release.

Haunter

Release Date: October 18, 2013 (limited)

The ghost of a teenager who died years ago reaches out to the land of the living in order to save someone from suffering her same fate.

I've read a good amount of positive previews for Haunter already, but this trailer makes the the film look like a generic haunted house flick.

Kill Your Darlings

Release Date: October 18, 2013

Daniel Radcliffe stars as Beat Generation icon Allen Ginsberg in this biopic set during the famed poet's early years at Columbia University, and centering on a murder investigation involving Ginsberg, his handsome classmate Lucien Carr, and fellow Beat author William Burroughs. The year is 1944. Ginsberg (Radcliffe) is a young student at Columbia University when he falls hopelessly under the spell of charismatic classmate Carr (Dane DeHaan). Alongside Carr, Ginsberg manages to strike up friendships with aspiring writers William Burroughs (Ben Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) that would cast conformity to the wind, and serve as the foundation of the Beat movement. Meanwhile, an older outsider named David Krammerer falls deeply and madly in love with the impossibly cool Carr. Later, when Krammerer dies under mysterious circumstances, police arrest Kerouac, Burroughs, and Carr as potential suspects, paving the way for an investigation that would have a major impact on the lives of the three emerging artists. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kyra Sedgwick, David Cross, and Michael C. Hall co-star.

Kind of hard to draw any conclusions from a thirty second teaser, but hopefully Radcliffe will star in a better film this time around, because as far as post-Harry Potter stuff goes, The Woman In Black was shit.

The Dirties

Release Date: October 4, 2013 (limited)

When two best friends team up to film a comedy about getting revenge on bullies, the exercise takes a devastating turn when one of them begins to think of it as more than a joke.

Interesting.

I ran across this on YouTube by accident, and The Dirties could stir up some controversy, but I'm hoping The Dirties will send out the right message, when it's all said and done. Because if they're just using the subject matter for pure shock value, I'm pretty sure the critics will tear this one apart like there's no tomorrow.

Nothing Left To Fear

Release Date: October 4, 2013 (limited theatrical release, including VOD releases/On DVD October 8, 2013

NOTHING LEFT TO FEAR was inspired by the legend of Stull, Kansas. Wendy (Anne Heche), her husband Dan (James Tupper of "Revenge") and their kids have just moved to the small town of Stull, Kansas, where Dan is the new pastor. But in this sleepy community of friendly neighbors, a horrific series of occurrences awaits them: Their teenage daughter (Rebekah Brandes of Bellflower) is being tormented by grisly visions. Her younger sister (Jennifer Stone of "Wizards Of Waverly Place") has been marked for a depraved ritual. And deep within the heartland darkness, one of The Seven Gates Of Hell demands the blood of the innocent to unleash the creatures of the damned. Ethan Peck ("10 Things I Hate About You") and Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) co-star in this demonic shocker featuring original music by producer SLASH and inspired by the real-life paranormal legacy of Stull. NOTHING LEFT TO FEAR was written by Jonathon W.C. Mills and directed by Anthony Leonardi III.

Haven't we seen this same story enough? You know, a family moves to a little creepy and quiet town, some ghosts or demonic forces haunt and/or eventually try to possess or kill them, and of course, some of the townspeople try to warn the new family to leave, or some of the townspeople are helping the evil forces. :disappointed:

Anyway, I'll probably watch this regardless. Could be an okay little horror flick, but I can barely remember anything from Anne Heche's acting career. I know she played Johnny Depp's wife in Donnie Brasco, but that's only because I've seen the movie more times than I can count. And she's in something else I only saw once. I think the story revolves around her being trapped on island with someone (Harrison Ford?) after a plane crash, and Heche has to work with the other person for survival.

We Are What We Are

Release Date: September 27, 2013 (limited)

Director Jim Mickle (Mulberry Street, Stake Land) takes the helm for this horror remake centered on a reclusive family with a gruesome secret that's gradually revealed during a torrential downpour. The Parkers have never been much for company. In fact, for as long as they've lived in the Catskills, none of their neighbors have set foot in their home. And that's by design; family patriarch Frank (Bill Sage) is intent on maintaining his ancestral customs, which wouldn't be understood by modern society. Meanwhile, when the storm clouds open up and their small town starts to flood, the local authorities make some disturbing discoveries that seem to confirm everyone's worst suspicions about the mysterious clan.

I haven't seen the Mexican original, but according to IMDB, the Mexican original was released in 2010, and they're going with a remake now? Just........ wow.

Still, I really enjoyed Jim Mickle's work on Stakeland, so I'll give this a try, but I'll have to find the Mexican original first.

The Weinstein Co. present this adaptation of Tracy Letts' darkly comic play about a patriarch of a Midwest family who goes missing and the crumbling of his dysfunctional family in the aftermath of his disappearance. ER's John Wells directs from a script by Letts.

Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in the same cast? A December release date? Yep. I'll be shocked if AOC doesn't receive a shitload of Oscar nominations, including the obvious Best Actress (lead or supporting) for Roberts or Streep.

The Fifth Estate

Release Date: October 18, 2013

Triggering our age of high-stakes secrecy, explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, WikiLeaks forever changed the game. Now, in a dramatic thriller based on real events, "The Fifth Estate" reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century's most fiercely debated organization. The story begins as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful. On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes. Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world's most legendary media organizations combined. But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society-and what are the costs of exposing them?"

The trailer really doesn't do anything for me, but I'm sure the source material will be enough to draw some decent crowds at theaters.

Escape From Tomorrow

Release Date: October 11, 2013 (limited)

The most provocative film from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW should not exist, and yet it does. Like nothing you've ever seen, Randy Moore's directorial debut is a bold and ingenious trip into the happiest place on earth. An epic battle begins when a middle-aged American husband and father of two learns that he has lost his job. Keeping the news from his nagging wife and wound-up children, he packs up the family and embarks on a full day of park hopping amid enchanted castles and fairytale princesses. Soon, the manufactured mirth of the fantasy land around him begins to haunt his subconscious. An idyllic family vacation quickly unravels into a surrealist nightmare of paranoid visions, bizarre encounters, and an obsessive pursuit of a pair of sexy teenage Parisians. Chillingly shot in black and white, ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW dissects the mythology of artificial perfection while subversively attacking our culture's obsession with mass entertainment.

I dunno.

I know a lot of people online are creaming themselves over Disney taking a more bold trip into a darker side of horror, but when I think about horror and Disney, that shitty horror comedy about the haunted mansion starring Eddie Murphy pops into my mind (and if I remember correctly, it was inspired by the ride/attraction at the Disney theme park). Don't get me wrong, I really like what I see in this trailer, but still, I have a hard time believing in Disney really pushing the envelope into a more sinister and risky territory for a horror film.

Grudge Match

Release Date: December 25, 2013

Two retired boxers (Sylvester Stallone and Robert DeNiro) settle a long-standing beef by heading back into the ring in this sports drama from director Peter Segal.

Jake LaMotta VS Rocky Balboa? Awesome.

In all seriousness, really looking forward to this. And who knows, maybe the old guys will be lucky enough to land a few Oscar noms?

Homefront

Release Date: November 27, 2013

HOMEFRONT is an action movie about a widowed ex-DEA agent who retires to a small town for the sake of his 10-year-old daughter. The only problem is he picked the wrong town.

I'm intrigued by the idea of Franco and Statham squaring off against each other, but this trailer for Homefront has an undeniable generic feel to it.

Grand Piano

Spanish Language Trailer

Taking a page out of the book of incredible film history feats like HIGH NOON, the bulk of the movie takes place in near-real time over the course of a high stakes classical music concert. It’s here that our hero makes his long-awaited return to performing after being stricken with stage fright at a show five years ago. Lured by the chance to honor his long-time instructor in a program showcasing some of his hardest works, the reluctantly musician accepts the concert, knowing full on that it means tackling the infamous “unplayable piece.” The lights go down and the concert begins with a few warm up selections, but something strange is happening inside the score on the piano. As the pages are turned, text begins to appear, defining a very clear threat – “Play a wrong note and you die.

No US release dates yet, so I guess there's a chance Grand Piano will come to the states in 2014. Nice trailer, and I'll watch anything with Elijah Wood, so I'm sold.

A bloody and very gruesome red band trailer for Machete kills. And call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure Sofia Vergara's crotch gun is a direct copy of Sex Machine's crotch gun in From Dusk 'Till Dawn. I guess Rodriguez is trying to pay homage to one of his own films.

Jake LaMotta VS Rocky Balboa?

Exactly what I was thinking. It might not be a bad movie though.

And Machete Kills looks just awful. I can't get behind it from the previews at all. Not saying I couldn't be mistaken, but I'm definitely going to have to hear a lot of good things to even watch it.

And Machete Kills looks just awful.

I take it you didn't see or like the first one? Going by the trailers, Machete Kills looks like more of the same over the top blood, gore, and violence from the first film, just more extreme, gory, and graphic this time around.

And I like what I see from Mel in the trailers. Just looking at the trailers, I already get the sense he's going to be a better villain than De Niro and Steven Segal.

Last Days On Mars

Release Date: December 6, 2013 (limited)

On the last day of the first manned mission to Mars, a crew member of Tantalus Base believes he has made an astounding discovery - fossilized evidence of bacterial life. Unwilling to let the relief crew claim all the glory, he disobeys orders to pack up and goes out on an unauthorized expedition to collect further samples. But a routine excavation turns to disaster when the porous ground collapses, and he falls into a deep crevice and near certain death. His devastated colleagues attempt to recover his body. However, when another vanishes they start to suspect that the life-form they have discovered is not yet dead. As the group begins to fall apart it seems their only hope is the imminent arrival of the relief ship Aurora.

Probably the worst possible time to release a "peril in space" movie.

There's already a ton of buzz surrounding Gravity, and recently James Cameron praised Gravity as "the best space film ever." Cameron is one of the most celebrated and praised filmmakers of our time, so people are going to respect and listen to his opinions.

Big fan of Liev Schreiber, but yeah, I can't imagine too many people caring about this film.

Dallas Buyers Club

Release Date: December 6, 2013 (limited)

In the fact-based drama, Spirit Award winner Matthew McConaughey portrays real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1985, Ron was blindsided by being diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. With the U.S. still internally divided over how to combat the virus and restricting medications, Ron grabbed hold of non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, he established a "buyers club," which fellow HIV-positive people could join for access to his supplies.

Can't believe I'm actually looking forward to McConaughey's films now a days. McConaughey had a bad habit of putting out so much trash (I will never forgive him for Surfer Dude) year after year, but recently, he's been on a great run with The Lincoln Lawyer, Magic Mike (and although the movie itself was shit, he was pretty good in The Paperboy), and I still haven't seen Mud or Killer Joe yet.

Going by the trailer, I wouldn't be surprised if McConaughey got an Oscar nod out of this.
