Your Favorite Movie

Too Sweet To Be Sour
I'm surprised and I don't see a thread on this, especially with all the traffic coming through here the last week or two. So anyway, this thread is as simple as the title explains, cut and dry really. What is your favorite movie. Remember to explain your answers, I hate to play mod here but spam is annoying.

Anyway, I have a few movies at the top of my list, and keep in mind I haven't seen many "classics" in the sense of the word. I am not the biggest movie expertise is the world, as I like television more. But before I begin, I'd like to give honorable mentions to Lord of War, Hotel Rwanda, Friday Night Lights, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, and The Green Mile. Those are five of some of my favorite movies, but if I have to go with just one it would have to be:

remember-the-titans-DVDcover.jpg

I've made a thread and multiple posts about this movie in my re-ignited interest in this section recently, so it's probably going to sound like I'm on repeat, but I want to contribute to my new thread myself, and this one wins this contest for me. I have seen this movie at least five or six times. Everything about it just clicks with me. First off, I love sports, so most sports movies are at least decent to me, unless they absolutely blow balls. Second, I play high school football, and I am extremely dedicated to it. So this strikes deep with me on two different personal levels. I also love the story it tells. Not top mention, as over-exaggerated as it is, it still has it's basis in reality and it actually happened, which always helps drive home the mood and feeling of a movie for me. I love the power struggles and the great portrayal of racism in this movie. The story of what happens to Gerry and his struggle is touching, and how the characters all overcame their different struggles, many racism, really hits home with me. The performance of Denzel Washington really shines in this movie, most particular his speech at Gettysburg during the camp. The football is intense and I think this movie should be required viewing for all high school athletes, at least football players. It really drives home leadership, power struggles, and teamwork, as well as the adversity and dedication it takes for the sport. It is also a great movie the family can enjoy and one you can just relax and enjoy.

Anyway, that is my choice, what about you?

This is a very tough thing for me to narrow down and I'm sure it is for a lot of people which is evident as the thread has no replies thus far. It's just too difficult for me to pick just one movie to label as an absolute favorite. Mostly because I go through a lot of phases. Sometimes I'll be in a mode where I'm very into Action/Suspense Thrillers, or even Horror Flicks. But most of the time, I'm a comedy man, so I think I'm going to go with the funniest movie I've ever seen.

superbad-10530.jpg

It's a tough battle for me to figure out which movie I think is funnier than any other, but more often than not, this is what comes to mind. A ridiculously hilarious take on the tired ass Teen Comedy genre that has plagued our generation for years now, Superbad gives us a much better insight to what college kids are really all about. The old style always projects the nerdy/loner types vs the Popular crowd but here, we see the other aspect, the guys in the middle or the average kid. This is a group that I find much easier to relate to. I wasn't a jock/preppy kid in High School, nor was a bookworm. I had girlfriends and I did stupid shit like getting drunk and high all of the time. I think that there are a lot more people that fall into this group than the others yet somehow, this demographic hadn't really been tackled until Superbad came out. There are several situations I can see actually happening that they portray in Superbad. Well, except the whole Cop/McLovin thing.

But more important than any of that, the movie is just funny. Jonah Hill is just an absolute riot and he always excels in an environment where he's allowed to improvise instead of having to stick to a script. He delivers tons of quotable lines and his story with his love interest is something I can easily relate to. Seth Rogen and... I can never remember that guy's name but him and Rogen are a fucking riot as the cops. You could tell that they were just having fun and it came across very well. I love watching these kind of movies where comedy just comes from the top of the head instead of constantly having to stick to a script, and no other movie does it better than Superbad.

There are a lot of movies that I have seen and loved, but there is one that really takes the cake for me.

the-expendables-big.jpg

A lot of people have differing opinions on this movie. I personally loved it. It really was a thrill for me to see all of these huge action stars together on the big screen. It also helps when you're a fan of almost every one of them. I thought the movie had great action, good suspense, and even some bits of good comedy. This is a movie that you have to watch as a fan, and not a critic. If you watch as a fan, you'll love every minute of the movie. If you watch it as a critic, you'll find it enjoyable - but not very good. Many people say that the movie wasn't very good because it's plot wasn't very good. I disagree, I thought the plot was excellent, especially towards the end. All in all, I really enjoyed this movie. It's one of the few movies that I have actually gone out and bought when it was released.

Plus, it has Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The-Lord-of-the-Rings---Return-of-t.jpg

This has to go down as my favoirte movie. I loed the battle scens that are displayed throughout this movie. The acting is great and everything about this movie is perfect. I thought that it was an appropriate send off to some of the best movies ever made. Tolkein was a genious who gave us this amazing story. I think that movie can get anyone interested in it. I also think the animiations that are throughout this story are simply stunning. Honestly one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. The storylines and the ideas that are presented are amazing and it is always nice to see a movie with this much hype deliver. I think it will go down with the movie greats.

AlamoGoodBadUgly.jpg

Yep. In case the sig wasn't enough, this is all the confirmation you need. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is my all time favourite film. Whether it's the trademark, extreme, close-ups by Sergio Leone, the gritty Clint Eastwood, the sinister Lee Van Cleef, the dastardly Eli Wallach or the terrific score by Ennio Morricone, this just has the feel of an epic film. Clocking in at roughly three hours long, this one's the ultimate film for me. You just get the feeling that something big is going down all the time and it's got action all over the place, but also plot and interesting characters and motives. Eastwood becomes a God in film with it and Lee Van Cleef cements his place as one of the greatest western actors of all time. Oh and Wallach is very cool too.

I kinda go in circles when it comes to picking one.

Right now tho.. Probably Animal House. The more I watch this movie, the more I love the soundtrack. There are some genuinely funny slapstick spots, as oppose to most slapstick spots feeling forced. Greg (James Daughton) is so hot in this movie. (lol) I don't think Bluto is worthy of his "iconic" status as others who love this movie, but who cares. Still a great movie.

movie_WindThatShakes.jpg

As an Irish person, this movie is an enthralling take on the harsh and severe troubles that we went through with Britain. It is a masterpiece into capturing the low quality life of the average Irish person, and then the shocking happenings from 1920 on. It captures all the emotion the Irish poured into the fight for independence, struggling to sneak behind British forces, “The Black and Tans”, to start a revolt. The acting is fantastic all round, which is amazing considering the limit of big stars in the movie. The movie never ventured to far, since not many other countries would know about this time in Irish history. The movie also captures the fighting spirit of the Irish, and stupidity of not being happy with what they got, and wanting more, which led to more death. It was very captivating and nearly had me in tears at parts. Fantastic movie. 5 stars.

To be honest, I usually find myself going back and forth between this and Goodfellas when it comes to my favourite movie, but if you force me to choose one, I'd usually pick the Green Mile. It is just an amazing story which keeps me hooked for it's entire three hour duration, no matter how many times I've seen it. Tom Hanks is brilliant, as usual, in his role as Paul Edgecombe, and Michael Clarke Duncan was nominated for an Oscar for his role as John Coffey. However, in my opinion, Doug Hutchison steals the movie as Percy Wetmore. I believe Hutchison's performance, as well as the character of Percy, are hugely underrated. Percy is one of very few characters to actually make me dislike him when watching the movie. The execution of Coffey is one my all time favourite movie scenes. It's so emotional it's moved me to tears on occasion. Overall, this is a great movie and one which I believe everyone should see at least once.

eternal_sunshine_of_the_spotless_mind.jpg

My favorite movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Since seeing the movie for the first time I don't think another movie has really come close, in fact seeing the movie really was the movie that got me thinking about what movies were my favorite movies because it meant a lot to me after seeing it.

I wasn't a huge Charlie Kaufman fan before the movie (and other than Adaptation I'm still not), but this movie made a profound statement about the worth of relationships and all the pain you have to go through to have the good times. It poses the question if you knew just how bad it will eventually get, would you have the good times to make it worth it? And it did it with a creative narrative structure, interesting characters, and some pretty good actors from top of the cast to bottom.

pulp-fiction-poster.jpg

It was a tough call for me, but Pulp Fiction is definitely the movie that made me a fan of movies period. With such stars as Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Bruce Willis, etc the movie had to be Tarantino's greatest work to date. So many memorable quotes ooze from dialogue man it still has people's interest 16-17 years later.

Other favorites of mine are: The Big Lebowski, The Warriors, A Clockwork Orange, and The Silence Of The Lambs

titanic-movie-poster-1020339699.jpg

I have to admit it, Titanic is my favorite movie of all time.
It may not be the manliest choice but I dont believe there was ever a more beatiful epic movie ever made. The cinematography was brilliant, it's memorable lines are remembered by everyone and it is so powerful and emotional I would be lying if I said I didnt cry the first time I watched it. It was the highest grossing film ever until James Cameron came out with another blockbuster with Avatar. The cast really brings it all together though, Leo Dicaprio & Kate Winslet were perfect in their roles and their chemistry was magical. I believe Joseph McBride of Boxoffice Magazine put it perfectly when he said, "To describe Titanic as the greatest disaster movie ever is to sell it short". If you have not seen this wonderful film then please do yourself the pleasure of watching it.

American Pie 2
American-Pie-2.jpg

This is, without a doubt in my mind, the movie that I have seen the most. I would hazard a guess that I have seen this movie over a hundred times since it was released and every single time I do, I find a new reason to fall in love with it. A lot of people say it is not as good as the original but I think it goes above and beyond everything that the original gave us and I just absolutely adore it.

Although the plot is really simple and circulates around the same premise that the original did, I still think it is a brilliant unique movie that so many other have tried to do better. So far, I have never seen another movie that has did it better than American Pie 2 and I don't think there will ever be a movie that does this genre better.

Words cannot describe how much I love this movie and the performance of Seann William Scott in particular. His Stifler character was taken from a mundane teenager to forge a huge legacy in this movie and beyond. You have to believe that every single modicum of his success in Hollywood comes on the back of this series and this movie in particular. His performance in this movie says a lot about his character and I think it is one of the reasons that I fell in love with this movie. Of course, you cannot discount the other people who make this movie great. Eugene Levy, Jason Biggs and Eddie Kaye Thomas are three other stand-out performances in this movie.

Maybe it helped that I was a sex-starved teenager when this movie was created that was going through the same thing but I have never enjoyed a movie as much before or since I seen this one. A wonderfully funny movie that gets me invested every single time I see it.

I'm not going to lie, My favorite movie of all time might not please some people. But I really enjoyed one of the main actors in this movie. The first time I saw it I really laughed because you wouldn't peg this man for a Pot smoking gangster. But I loved him in the role he played. My favorite movie of all time is

This whole movie is pretty spot on from what I've seen in my life. This sort of shit did happen, and still does. Kidnappings aren't a huge thing in the drug world, but alot of pointless killings are. The emotion showed by the actor that played Jake is fucking amazing, his junkie bit was over the top. The actor at the end who played the mother allmost made me tear up, that was a fucking amazing performance. That was raw dude, real raw. If that wouldn't have been in a move I could have actually believed her.

Without a doubt, my favorite movie of all time is Jaws.

JAWS_Movie_poster.jpg

As a child, this movie scared the bejesus out of me and instilled a lifelong fascination of great white sharks. I visited San Diego a few weeks ago and couldn't bring myself to go into the Pacific Ocean past my knees because I am still afraid.

But the movie itself was so well done and suspenseful. Go figure that it turned out this way because the mechanical sharks never worked. Spielburg's vision really came to life hear. Roy Scheider was amazing as Chief Brody (Smile you son of a bitch!). Richard Dreyfuss played a perfect Mr. Hooper, and Robert Shaw was epic as Quint (Farewell and Adeui to you fair Spanish lady...). Quint's death scene has to be up there with the best of all time.

If you get a chance, watch this film. Then, watch the making of Jaws special that airs periodically on A & E.

The choice getting up to my top two are very easy. From that point though, it becomes impossible for me to choose which I enjoy more. As you all may know if you have ever read about my taste in movies, there are two movie series that are far and away my favorite sets of entertainment in the world. Those two being the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and the Star Wars Saga. It was incredibly tough to choose my two favorite movies from each series, but after a while I chose two.

Let me give you a little background of my history with these two series. I had seen the original three Star Wars before the Lord of the Rings movies were made. At the time, they weren't my cup of tea. I used to have a completely different taste in movies back then. Eventually, the LOTR movies came out, and my Dad was boasting about how fantastic the books were. So, I went to see them and was utterly blown away. I credit those movies with changing my entire perspective on films. I then saw that the Star Wars Prequels were being released, and being naive and stupid, decided to skip the first two and watch the third. At the time, I wasn't impressed at all and Star Wars faded into obscurity for myself with LOTR taking the throne and ruling with no challengers for years.

Then this year I decided after intense persuasion from my cousin, to buy the six movies and watch them. Well, I watched the first five and fell in love. They were great. I had no memory of the final one that I saw in theaters so I had no idea what was going to happen, or what to expect. I watched that movie and was brought nothing but sheer excitement throughout the entire two hour experience. I cannot really explain my feelings after watching it. I was that blown away. The third movie did something that no movie had done since LOTR in 2001-2003 and that was blow me away on every aspect. I never thought a movie would impress me on the levels the LOTR did but I was proven wrong.

Now, you know that I choose "Revenge of the Sith" from the Star Wars series, but what did I choose from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy? Well, it was tough but I made my decision. The Fellowship was a fantastic prequel for what was to come. It really set up the following movies perfectly giving us insight to the characters and the plot. It even culminated with a pretty great battle scene and one of the most memorable deaths in film history. This movie was great for what it was meant to be. A prequel to set us up on the story and such. The next two movies are the real deal and gave an epic feeling that the first one didn't. That is really what I judge these movies on. The epic feel is really the main attraction to the trilogy. You feel that they are bigger than just films. The Two Towers really brought together, and set up the final battle for the fate of Middle Earth. It set up the final battle against Sauron by having his closest ally defeated and really set the stage for Rohan's importance in the final battle. It built on the foundation set by The Fellowship and gave us a fantastic battle scene in the process. These two movies were absolutely great and I can find no fault in them however, nothing beats the epic finale. The Return of the King is other-worldly. It has many different struggles whether it be Aragorn's struggle to coup with Arwen's impending death, Frodo's struggle to get the ring to Mordor, or the peoples of Middle-Earth's final battle against the Dark Lord. Everything was perfect and most importantly, nothing I have ever seen in film has had the feel of this movie. To this day, when Aragorn draws the once broken sword from its sheath I get goosebumps. The battle outside of Minas Tirith was amazing, Minas Tirith itself was amazing, the final battle outside the Black Gates was amazing, and the ending was amazing. Nothing else in the series holds a candle to this movie which is saying a lot.

So, now that we have established which two movies I have picked we can now understand my dilemma. Both movies have the epic feel, they both have multiple constant struggles, they both have very good acting, and they both have epic battle scenes. If somebody held a gun to my head and made me choose a favorite movie, I would have to say Return of the King. The reasons for this are that I believe ROTK had a better atmosphere, and a better setup than Revenge of the Sith. No matter how badass the final battle between Anakin and Obi Wan was can make me choose Revenge of the Sith over Return of the King with my life on the line. No other movies are even close to these two in my book besides the predecessors of each movie. There ya have it. My fucking rant on my favorite movie.

I recently partly wrote my dissertation on this film amongst 3 others (Yojimbo, Magnificent Seven and Fistful of Dollars) and it's just awesome in the true sense of the word. It's 3 hours of some of the greatest cinema ever committed to film and still the benchmark for action films today. A recommended watch for sure.

As for favourite english language film, I'd love to say a film like Goodfellas or Reservoir Dogs or Gladiator or something like that, but one film I've never tired of is this bad boy;

images-2.jpg

This film is simply magic. Both a truly heart-warming yet disturbing and emotional story that Tom Hanks carries on his own. Sure, the rest of the characters add more depth to the plot but Hanks is the backbone and the heart of this film. The execution of John Coffey is my favourite scene in any film... ever, because no matter how many times I watch it, it tears me up. The acting is that strong. Eduard Delacroix's botched execution is a scene which is legitimately hard to watch, due to it's graphic nature. And the bond that is built between Paul Edgecomb and John Coffey is touching and a great message. The Green Mile is a film I can jump into with an hour left and still be engrossed by it. An absolute masterpiece.

My favourite movie of all time is Man On Fire. Denzel Washington is fantastic with the main character role he plays. I have watched it a lot and can never get bored of it. If you have not seen it I highly recommend it esp if you like revenge type films

I watch a lot of movies. Therefore, I couldn't give you just one. Nonetheless, I'll give you my top 5 as that is as close as I can get.

1. Pulp Fiction. Just well written, well acted and a fun, sexy story doesn't help either. John Travolta, I still attest, made rolling cigarettes look cooler than in any other movie prior or since. It wasn't tricky, wasn't boring. Just.... done. Very cool. Big Quentin Tarantino fan.

2. Malcolm X. A lot of people will say that Training Day opened their eyes up to Denzel. I'd agree, but X was simply the better film, to me. I love both, though. Well acted and he really had a Malcolm X feel to him. Very believable. Spike's best work, perhaps.

3. There Will Be Blood. I just can't imagine a movie being any better acted. From top to bottom on the billing, it's incredible. Lewis is one of my favorite actors and I think that I prefer this out of all his other work. Such a great supporting cast, as mentioned. Love the film. The score is great, too.

4. Wet Hot American Summer. Just foolish and makes me laugh. I know it's not the best movie made. I know it's not thought-altering. It just makes me giggle. Probably my favorite comedy. "You taste like a burger. I don't like you anymore."

5. Silence Of The Lambs. This movie is one of the few "horror/scary" movies that I like. For whatever reason, scary movies don't scare me. (I wish they did. Just seems like fun.) But, I did find this movie fascinating. Fun little fact: Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor Oscar in 1991 when this movie came out. The movie was 118 minutes long and he spent less than 18 on screen. That is powerful fucking acting.

Honorable mention; Shutter Island, Boyz N The Hood, Training Day, American Gangster, Casino, Reservoir Dogs, No Country For Old Men, Forrest Gump, The Aviator, Goodfellas. I could go on and on.

I don't watch a whole lot of movies really but recently I saw this one and it was amazing

Tyler Perry Presents : Madeas Big Happy Family

The movie is incredible , it was somehow both the funniest AND the saddest movie I ever saw... at the SAME TIME

That new Planet of the apes movie in which Monkeys attempt to take over the world looks to be a contender to steal the title of favorite movie soon

Well my original pick was Pulp Fiction but that was mentioned already so I"ll go with an equally awesome movie in

reservoir-dogs-giant-poster.jpg

A great movie with a star studded cast and some great acting. One of Tarantino's best films and one of my favs. It has so many memorable scenes and quotable lines. It really is the perfect film. If you havn't seen it, you need to.

My all time favorite has to be...

the-fifth-element-movie-poster.jpg

Quite frankly, it has everything. Action, comedy, compelling story and Milla Jovovich's nipple.

My favorite movie is Hot Fuzz!

Hot_fuzz.jpg

Hot Fuzz is my favorite movie because it is the perfect combination of a great story, insane levels of action, and a high amount of hilarity along the way. There are a couple of epic spoilers in it and some tributes to other action films. Few movies do as good of a job in both the action and comedy criteria at the same time. I have seen it several times and it gets funnier each time. I could watch it over and over again without getting sick of it.

Second place is The Hangover!

Hangoverposter09.jpg

Then there is The Hangover. It takes second place for me because it is just as funny as Hot Fuzz (even moreso in some scenes!) but also Vegas weddings hold a soft spot for me, as I got married in Vegas myself. In fact my own bachelor party was basically like a sober version of The Hangover. My brother-in-law, uncle-in-law, my wife's best friend, and I all got lost wandering around in Vegas gambling and goofing off trying to find our rooms again. It's one of the funniest films ever made and I will never get sick of watching it.

These two movies by far outrank anything else for me.

its already been mentioned but i Love Titanic above all others.....the cinematography, the dialogue, the images, the sinking, the love story..... all together made for the greatest movie ever made in my book

and the funny thing is I always skip the first hour and a half and start just when the ship crashes.....

Close second is The Dark Knight
