Your Favorite Bret Hart Summerslam Match

HBKperfect23

Championship Contender
Shawn Michaels has always been known as Mr Wrestlemania, and rightfuly so. I think if we were going to find a Summerslam equivlant to that it would hands down be Bret Hart. To me this is where Bret shined, so lets pick the match you enjoyed most.

My vote goes for Bret and Bulldog in 1992. Favorite PPV ever and in my opinion the greatest match in the history of pro wrestling. The atmosphere was electric. Bret was so on that night. I think he knew it was his one shot to get into the main event picture and boy did he ever deliver.

I was 9 when I saw Bret beat Mr Perfect at Summerslam 91'. I was already a fan of the hitman, watching Bret kick out of the perfect plex and win the title in person is 90% responsible for me still being a wrestling fan. (the other 10% is discovering really stiff wrestling from Japan, Mick Foley falling off the cell, and Kurt Angle combined).

My vote would have to be summerslam 91. That was a great example of the IC title meaning something. Perfect and Hart put on a clinic like they always do. They've met a couple times, another time being during the 93 KOTR but their match at SummerSlam 91 was great. Hart might not have been the best promo machine as a face but his matches more then made up for it.

His cage match with Owen is one of the best matches of all time. No doubt in my mind when I say that. Truly a 5 star classic. Also the best cage ever. His 92 match with Bulldog would be a very close second.

Got to be Summerslam 92 for me. The crowd was electric, and Bret and Davey were given the chance to main event the IC title. Amazing match from start to finish, and you knew Bret was about to become even bigger. One of the loudest crowd pops ever when Davey won. Possibly one of the best matches ever.

Got to be SummerSlam 91 for me,These two put on a match that if it had happened at a Mania, might've eclipsed Steamboat/Savage.

I had a bunch of people over to watch,we had pizza,beer..the works,I did that back then.
Everyone was standing and clapping at what they saw!

Mr Summerslam....hmm possibly. Nobody has mentioned his great WWE Title win over Undertaker at Summerslam. 97 with HBK as referee.
Sure Bret has had some solid Summerslam matches. Does this make Kane Mr Royal Rumble and Randy Orton Mr Survivor Series?????

I got to go with the 97 match against Taker.Unfortunately thats the only summerslam I saw from Bret. But U cant deny that it was an amazing match(espacially the ending)

Not easy to pick just one! Big Bret Hart fan here!!

Most Notable Matches

SummerSlam 91' vs. Mr. Perfect

SummerSlam 92' vs. The British Bulldog

SummerSlam 94' vs. Owen Hart

SummerSlam 97' vs. The Undertaker

I remember these four matches very well, Honestly, I always considered his match with Bulldog as the best, that match wasn't even about Bulldog, it was all about Bret and getting him over as a main event wrestler and it did just that because he won his first WWF title months later.. The match was great, epic from start to finish and the crowd was into it throughout! Argruably the biggest pop in WWE history when Bulldog won..

However, I recently watched the cage match between Owen and Bret, WOW! What a match, the purpose of the cage wasn't to keep the 2 brothers in the ring, but to keep the rest of the family out! The feud alone was just amazing!! and the match was so back and forth, many thought Owen would win his first wwf title? This is the best cage match for me and easily I would rate this a 5 star match! I actually rank this match higher than their WrestleMania match!

Bret's literally my favorite wrestler ever so it's not easy to pick one match, just looking for his Summer Slam matches he's faced the who's who and seemed to excell at the summer event. I'd probably go with the Owen Hart match, that was my first PPV Bret Hart match so SummerSlam 94' though the event sucked that match alone was worth the cost of the dvd/vhs.

Congratulations, you have the best thread of the day so far.

My favorite match of Bret's from a Summerslam was Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog. The atmosphere was amazing, fact that it was done from England was unique, story leading into the match with Diana and the fact Bret and Davey were brothers-in-law added that extra bit and made things come across as somewhat personal. Match itself was fantastic, Bret and Davey always had great chemistry, Bulldog put on the finest match of his career and in the process gained the finest moment of his career and one of the best in wrestling. Another great match of theirs was In Your House 5, highly recommend it.

Brother vs Brother in the cage in 94. One of the all time greatest storylines/fueds with one of the greatest matches of all time at that year's Summerslam.

I thought his match against the Taker in 97 was great until the goofy ending where HBK hits Taker with a chair. Not a big fan of ending a PPV main event like that. Bret should have won clean.

Bret vs Bulldog was excellent, but a tad bit overrated in my opinion.

Have not seen Bret vs Perfect in a looooooong time. Need to go track that one down.

its definatley between his matches with owen and bulldog but ill have to go with bulldog because not only did he deliver a 5 star match but it vaulted him into the main event

gotta go with 92 Bret vs Bulldog. the ending was great. they got the hart family involved so it ment something more then the belt. I have to say that was one of the best matches not just for bret but ever that match is in my top 10

So tough as his matches against Perfect, Bulldog and Owen are considered classics by everyone.

I would go with the Bulldog match. This was a IC title match that was the main event over a WWF championship match that involved Macho and Warrior. That right there shows where Bret was heading and the match itself was so good with so much drama and a simple but effective end that worked on every level. It is also the classic example of a guy who tops the mid card, drops the belt in grand style on his way out and gets to the top shortly after. This match is everything thats right about wrestling and the way programs and builds should go.

All the matches mentioned were awesome and any of those matches could be considered his best match at Summerslam. I also would like to mention the three tag matches from the first three Summerslams. The Brainbusters tag was really good, and the two Demolition tag matches were probably the best tag matches of Demolition's run in the WWF. He also had a fun match with Doink and King at 1993, and a good carry job at Summerslam 1995. Bret Hart is definitely Mr. Summerslam as far as putting on quality matches each year.

To me it was the 1992 Summerslam match with the British Bulldog vs Bret Hart for the Intercontiental championship. It was what made me start watching wrestling and if it wasn't for that match I would probally have never watched wrestling.

Agree totally with Bret being Mr.Summerslam. Oddly enough I think it fits both characters and their histories quite well that Bret is Summerslam and Shawn is Wrestlemania.

For my match I'm going to go with Bret vs Owen at Summerslam 94. Fantastic storyline that built to possibly the best cage match of all time, definitely the best cage match of the old WWF blue style bars anyway. The ending was just perfect and kept Owen looking strong in defeat too

Slight edge to his Summerslam 1992 match over his 91 won..the fact that Bulldog apparently forgot some spots and Bret still made it the classic that it is, to me is remarkable.

Well 92 will be his Summerslam match that goes down as a top 50 of all time and maybe the top summerslam match ever, but since nobody has mentioned this one, how about the match at Summerslam 90 which stole the show (much how he made his career by stealing the show before he was the main event) and that was the tag title match at summerslam 90 vs Demolition. Sure Demo was on their last leg but this was the best tag match the HF ever had at a ppv and it was easily the best match of what was a pretty good ppv

Bret himself has called his Summerslam 92 match with Davey as 'his best ever' and I'd agree that this is the pick of his Sumemrslam bouts (though '91 against Hening and '94 against Owen are both very good indeed).

The crowd reaction in Wembledy stadium was off the scale... ear ringing pop for Smith... and they two put on a masterful 25 minute bout. Bret kicks out of the powerslam, Davey survives the Sharpshooter.... and as Bret says in his book... Davey blew up in the first few minutes and forgot many of the spots they'd planned.... and Bret put on a majestic display to carry the match.

There was also an emotional reconciliation at the end as Davey, Bret and Diana all embraced as fireworks were lit as the show ended.

It was also special because it was Brets first (and also Daveys) chance to headline a PPV and it paid off spectacularly. This match helped propel Bret to the upper echelons of the WWF

Bret's track record at Summerslam was amazing, from the IC title match with Bulldog to the WWF title cage match with Owen, as well as the excellent 2 out of 3 falls tag title match against Demolition and the clinic that was the Hart Foundation vs The Brainbusters at 89.

My pick however is the IC title match from Summerslam 91, just a fantastic pure wrestling match between 2 of the best in the world's greatest arena, the counter into the Sharpshooter finish is a classic.

If you could match a wrestler up with a PPV, it would be SummerSlam=Bret Hart. He seemed to have most of his best matched there. I know there is wrestlemania, but when you say mania he name doesn’t come up as quick as HBK, Taker, or Hogan. So don’t get me wrong.
Anyway, I have to go with 92 with Bulldog. That was an epic match that concluded a really intense storyline. I thought the ending was unpredictable. I enjoy when a match has a finish without the usual man doing his finisher. The storyline also made it that more intense with them being brother in-laws and the sister/wife kind of has to pick. I know some are going to say what about the Owen and Bret brother storyline was intense and had a family divided. I felt that it was too long and played it out. I the storyline went from survivor series till after summerslam. That was the only problem I had really.
