WZ Music Tourney Finals

Just out of curiousity...

How many people from the United States are voting for Queen?

I not only VOTED for Queen, if you recall at the outset of the entire tournament, I created a HUGE post - a position peice, if you will - as to WHY Queen is the Greatest Rock Band in music history. And I am Northern New Jersey born and raised.

The thing that was so great about the finals - and about Queen as a band -is the fact that both bands, Queen and Metallica, transcended the "American" or "British" labels. That's one thing few other bands could boast. Hell, The Beatles couldn't shed the Brit-Rock label, and they lost! But The Who is Brit-Rock, and they were very well supported.

I'm American, and I voted for Queen. In fact, you could say that it was MY vote that helped Queen win.

No offense to IC, but I wasn't very interested in the Rock Tournament. It was long and laborious, and I didn't feel like committing to it.

But then it was mentioned in the Bar Room that the finals were tied at 26. And someone, I don't remember who, but they said something really stupid. He said that Metallica was a better band than Queen cuz he felt that Queen only ever made music to collect a paycheck.

I couldn't believe eyes. There it was, IN WRITING; because this guy thought that Queen only wanted to collect a paycheck, he was voting for Metallica, the guys who sued Napster.

Well, I thought that was completely backwards. The guy was voting against someone he THOUGHT were sellouts in favor of a band who DID sell out. So I immediately headed over to the Finals and voted for Queen.

So thank you, whoever you were. Metallica lost because you said something incredibly stupid. If you hadn't said it, it would have been a tie.

Just curious, IC, but would you have done if it HAD been a tie? Cry probably. All that work and no payoff?

Your welcome, Queen fans.

Ok that is ABSOLUTE FUCKING BULLSHIT!!!, I have been hearing that stupid fucking line of crap for years now, how the fuck did Metallica sell out?!?, cause they became successful?, cause they tried different things with their music?, or maybe (and this one is my favorite) it was because they cut there hair? I am so sick of people spewing such utter shit, please if Metallica sold out, then so did Queen, after all weren't they kinda successful, and I remember them changing up things they did with there music as well so they must be sell outs right:rolleyes:

Ok that is ABSOLUTE FUCKING BULLSHIT!!!,
No, it's not.
I have been hearing that stupid fucking line of crap for years now,
Then there must be some degree of truth to it.

how the fuck did Metallica sell out?!?, cause they became successful?
No, I don't have a problem with their success.
, cause they tried different things with their music?
,
No, that's not it either, I actually usually like it when a band tries different things.
or maybe (and this one is my favorite) it was because they cut there hair?
Now THAT'S stupid.

I think you have me confused with some other hardcore rock fan who thinks Metallica sold out. I don't care that they were successful, or tried different things, or cut their hair(who gives a fuck about that?!).
Perhaps "sold out" was the wrong way of putting it. Let's try this. A guy votes for the band who sued Napster, and his reasoning isn't about his preference in music or bands, it's because he feels the other band only cares about money. Does that not come across as backwards to you?

You are aware that a Metallica wasn't the only band that sued Napster right?, in fact a majority of the bands in this tournament were also involved in that lawsuit, and I beleive Metallica has stated that they had no problem with people downloading their music, they just were pissed with the fact that unreleased songs were being made available on Napster without Metallica's permission, in fact I remember reading somewhere that Metallica, as well as most bands, make more money from touring then they do album sales, the majority of the money from album sales actually goes to the record labels

Correct on all points. Metallica weren't very happy when a demo of "I Disappear" started circulating the internet. The origin was Napster, so Metallica sued them. I stand by what they did. I sure as hell wouldn't want people downloading demo's of my bands unfinished songs unless I gave permission.

Lots of respected artists such as Dr. Dre, Madonna, The Smashing Pumpkins and The Offspring sued Napster, yet people only seem to be pissed with Metallica.

Then why do they need to sue for the money? If most of that money goes to the record labels, then the label should sue.

Metallica didn't just sue Napster. They ran a sting operation, compiled a list of every Napster user who downloaded one of their songs, and got them banned from the service.

And it wasn't until Metallica proved successful in their lawsuit that Dr. Dre, and eventually others, joined in. Between Metallica and Dr. Dre, over half a million people were banned from Napster. They isolated a huge number of people, many who were thier fans, and for what? A few bucks that ended up going to the record labels anyway.

I don't have a problem with Metallica suing Napster. Personally, I think they were right to sue Napster. But to track down every single person who shared a file or downloaded a song, that's overkill.

What the fuck else are the suppose to sue for?!?, Napster fucked up, leaked a song that wasn't finished yet, Metallica felt Napster should be held accountable for what happened, and took what legal action they could, and that was to sue, I don't know what the fuck you expect them to get out of a lawsuit other than money, think of it more as Metallica trying fine Napster for leaking unfinished songs without their permission

People shouldn't be illegally downloading music, they deserved to get banned from the service

I agree. But the service shouldn't have those kinds of capabilities to begin with, and therfore, it should be the service that gets shut down.

If I steal an ice cream truck and start giving out ice cream for free, then I should be arrested, not the 5-year-old girl I gave a Firecracker to.

That's totally Metallica's decision. They never condoned people downloading their music for free, unless they were bootlegs. Those people who were so unfortunate to be banned from the service should have felt incredibly lucky they weren't sued by Metallica. They were breaking the law, simple as.

Rightfully so.

If you're a fan of a band, why break the law in order to listen to them? It isn't hard to purchase their music legally.

But the users of that site knew full well that downloading copyrighted material without the consent of the person who owns those copyrights is illegal, and the site was shut down for awhile, until they made everything legal, and the users of Napster were just banned from the site not arrested, though Metallica or the record labels could press charges against all those people if they really wanted to I'm sure

Also if you stealing and ice cream truck and giving away free ice cream, why would you be handing out firecrackers to 5 year olds, what are you trying to do blow the little hands off?!?

Firecrackers... aren't those the ice pops shaped like rockets? They have three layers, cherry, lemon, and blue raspberry?

That's fine, a lot of people feel that way. Plenty to improve in the processes, I don't take any offense. I had fun doing it, lots of people had fun participating. I'd do it again in the future, and if you think it was laborious to read, imagine how I felt! Phew!

Just curious, IC, but would you have done if it HAD been a tie? Cry probably. All that work and no payoff?

Overtime. Playoff. I had a backup plan. But it's better that it ended this way. It's a storybook ending.
