WWE, where is the Tag Team Division at?

The Road Warriors, The Four Horsemen, The Brain Busters, Power And Glory, Money Inc., The Rock And Sock Connection, The Rockers, Kronik, Styles and Daniels, The Steiner Brothers, The Killer Bees, The British Bulldogs, Evolution, The Dudley Boyz, The Naturals, Public Enemy, The Hollywood Blondes, The Blackjacks, the Rockers, Eddie and Chavo, The Nasty Boys, Demolition, The Powers Of Pain, Harlem Heat, The New Age Outlaws, America's Most Wanted, Disco Inferno and Alex Wright, yeah, and the list goes on and on. Do you know what they all have in common? They competed in tag team divisions, which seem to be pretty much nonexsistant in the WWE these days.Seriously, when was the last time you really saw a great WWE Tag Team Program running? Answer; Not For a long time.

It's true, it's damn true, to quote a certain red white and blue clad bald wrestler at TNA. The sadness has to come to play in the fact that The Miz and John Morrison are considered so great because they held the Tag Team Titles for so long, but let's be honest, who did they really beat? Where is the Tag Team division even at? It makes me wonder where WWE is taking things these days. Mind you, I seem to remember when Tag Teams were thrown together because two guys really went well together, and some have become staples in the industry because they just can't survive as singles competitors like the LOD and the Dudley Boyz, but where are we going?

Cody and Ted are a step in the right direction, but where is the competition for them even? It's so bad that they decided to have them take on Lawler and Hacksaw Jim Duggan. This match would have been okay, but the point is, does it really feel like there is even a division anymore? It has become such a joke they just decided to do the jerk thing and have Duggan taken from the team and have them beat the Hell out of Michael Cole. Wow, this really proved something didn't it? Don't you remember being excited to see who was Tag Team Champions because they beat so many other teams and proved themselves because those teams were established? Or they were the new up and coming group that was going to put a hurting on the other Tag Teams out there? Remember how upset, or excited as it may be, when Shawn Michaels and Marty Janetty broke up as the Rockers? Why? Because they were good as a team and established by beating great teams. Where did those days go?

I'm telling you that if things keep up the way that they are, the Tag Team Championships will end up like the Cruiserweight title did; Nonexsistant. As it is, the Tag Teams are slim pickins these days. It's like the only reason WWE pulls one out of the shadows anymore is to help someone out like say Ryder and Hawkins with Edge or Crime Time with John Cena. It just bugs me, do you even feel that there is any value to the Tag Team Titles at all anymore? I have a way to fix this problem and liven up the Tag Team division all together.

First of all, WWE takes the current WWE Tag Team Champions and the World Heavyweight Tag Team Champions and have them square off. Who ever the winner is becomes the undisputed Tag Team Champions of the world. Yeah, I know that this sounds strange at first, but bear with me here for a moment folks, there's a reason for this. Now you have one set of individuals that are the Tag Team Champions of the World, or WWE as it is, and what to do now? They can defend the titles on all three shows! Obviously they wouldn't do all three shows at the same time, but look at it this way, it makes building Tag Teams easier and the divisions are not as useless seeming as they are now. It also adds competition to the mix and makes the Champion that much more believeable and all three shows can vie for the same championship, adding the appeal of the brand competitions as well. Obviously, it's an idea that needs wrinkles ironed out, but it's a bigger and better step, I think, than what WWE is doing right now with the whole thing.

This would be a great way to do it I think because it is a way to add prestige and competition back to a division that has been sorely lacking for the last year and longer. Might even make the Tag Team Titles more desireable for the wrestlers as well. You could really get some heat behind a heel group if they are traveling to all three brands scouting their competition and taking them out and what have you. Just my two cents worth, but what do I know? Not like I am a multimillionaire like Vince McMahon is, yeah? I am just a fan is all.

Tag Team wrestling in WWE has really taken a turn for the worse in recent years. The booking of the tag champs has been up and down in quality and there are almost no teams on all three shows. Back in the Attitude Era, the tag division was something I was looking forward to each time. You had guys like the New Age Outlaws, Edge & Christian, the Hardy Boyz, the Dudleyz, heck, even the Hollys. Guys that made that title valuable as an asset to WWE.

Today, it's become more of an afterthought. The World Tag Team Championships are rarely defended, if at all, and for instance, when Hardcore Holly & Rhodes were champs, they were being booked to look weak by randomly hobbled-together teams like Santino & Carlito. And there was almost never a proper feud. WWE made their own tag division look bad by not giving their champions enough time for the matches. Why? To give Cena another 10 minutes for another one of his sucking up to the crowd/DON'T QUESTION MY HEART promos? Hell, Cade & Murdoch were a boring team, but at least they got to defend the titles at PPVs and have a proper feud. Rhodes & Holly did not have the Hardy Boyz available to feud with though. However, Rhodes and DiBiase have the potential to restore glory to the World Tag Team Championships after many years of neglect and misuse.

The WWE Tag Team Championship division, however, has really been on a roll and re-established its credibibility, thanks to two men known as John Morrison and The Miz. These guys brought back that must-watch intensity to the division, which had been missing since London & Kendrick dropped the titles to Deuce n' Domino. They were put in feuds against new teams like Jimmy Yang & Shannon Moore, and Jesse & Festus. The "15 Minutes of Fame" match MNM II had with Yang & Moore was one of the best matches I've seen on WWECW, ever. Now, however, with dropping them to Hawkins & Ryder, a team that has no credibility and no stand-out talent, WWE are killing their own momentum. And the only team on SD after the dissolution of Deuce n' Domino and the dropped team of Yang & Moore is Jesse and Festus. It's boring with a feud against only one team, although I guess SmackDown could form new teams. Vladimir Kozlov & Umaga for example, is one pairing I'd like to see.

WWE are doing themselves a disservice by failing to tend to their tag team divisions properly. At least one of the things TNA are doing right is their tag team division - just look at LAX, they deliver every time. Your idea is good - I'd like to see one (or is that two?) "Undisputed" Tag Team championship that can be defended on all three shows. Good article.

I appreciate the positive feedback, and I am serious about what I said, this is something that needs to be done and quickly or the Tag Team division will be gone. This reminds me of when WCW had no Tag team division and then they had the tournament to decide who the new Tag Team Champions would be. It was exciting and fun to watch while it went down and lead to some good teams being put together, most notably being Chuck Polumbo and Sean O'Haire, wow that was a long time ago, damn. I remember them beating Kevin Nash and DDP for the titles and carrying the titles with them to WWF for the Invasion storyline. Yeah, that stayed together really well. Too bad we couldn't have something like that these days. I'm talking the tournament, not the Invasion storyline.

I agree with your comments on the tag team division. It is slowly dying and it needs some serious help to get back on track. I think that unifying the belts is more than likely the best solution at this current period in time where the majority of the television programs are filled with interviees and talk segments rather than actually wrestling.

if you watch the PPVs on wwe 24/7 from the late 1990s and early 2000s the tag team matches were so good that they put more than 2 teams in them! the fatal 4 way elimination matches needed to be booked to get all that talent on the show, it seems you rarely see that happen at all anymore.

dont get me wrong we had a tag team revival close to 2 years ago (maybe less) when MNM rolled onto the scene, but we all know how that turned out.

it just seems to me that the WWE right now does not have enough "tag team" talent to push so they pair up two superstars for a few shows, such as carlito and santino, and then just when it gets good, they send them on their own seperate ways.

it wouldnt suprise me if cody and ted and rider and hawkins hold their respective tag belts for a long time as there seems to be nothing in the works for them in regards to fueds or competition.

good column. :)

You know what the saddest thing is here? I wrote this column a few months ago and still feel mostly the same way. Mind you, I actually feel a little worse. I watch WWE and it seems like they really aren't even trying. The Tag Teams are just there for transitional purposes and that's it. A quick shot until the team falls apart and one guy goes onto the big time and the other wrestler ends up getting thrown out in the cold and eventually fired. Very sad when you look at the long list that division has had in the past. I guess that WWE has decided that there is no room for Tag Teams in wrestling. At least TNA has a well put together program for Tag Teams. I guess I just wish WWE could get it together.
