WWE Backup?

Sivsyboi

Pre-Show Stalwart
I'm know that everyone has already made comments about this but...

Is CM Punk WWE's backup choice for every one of his title reigns?

ECW Championship: Because Morrison needed to be suspended

W.H Championship: Wasn't supposed to win mitb.

Tag team: Random pairing, random title reign (Not sure it was WWE's first choice)

IC: Just so he could job to JBL two months later

W.H: His first championship reign that was supposed to be his (Although Big Show was the primary choice for mitb) But lost it without a clean defense (Christ!)

This seems more for World titles than the others, which is strange. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing but are WWE using CM Punk as a fall-back champion?

AND Punk's second reign was almost as bad as his first. Not a single clean defense.

that does kind of make sense if u really think about it
im not really a big cm punk fan but its not fair that such a hard worker like punk gets 2 shit title runs
but my own personal opinion is that he isnt championship material anyway
jeff deserves it even though hes fucked up hes been in the wwf/e since 93
so losing the title to him wouldnt make cm punk look bad at all

This is an intresting theroy. Punk's first WHC reign was shit, nothing more nothing less. A series of okay matches with Batista and JBL, then he gets punted by Orton, and doesn't even compete in the championship scramble. It seemed like WWE was just in a hurry to get the belt of punk, so they could continue with the Jericho/HBK feud. Punk and Kingston lost the tag titles at a house show to Miz and Morrison. When you lose championships at house shows, that can't mean anything good. His IC title win seemed it would be long. He had a nice feud with Regal, and they put on some pretty good matches. He got a huge pop when he won the title (I know it was in Chicago) ,and had a nice celebration with the fans afterwards. Then out of no where, he jobs to JBL, and loses the belt, thus setting up JBL's WM 25 retirement match in which he got destroyed by Mysterio? Then there's his most Current WHC reign. He makes a heel turn, and then the whole eye injury saga started at The Bash. He kicked the ref to retain which made him look weak. And last night he loses the WHC to Hardy. WWE has made Punk out to be a weak heel and face. Both his WHC reigns are forgetable. When he was face, it seemed like he was lucky to win the belt, and now as heel, he seemed like a coward trying to find any cheap way to win.

Technically, he did have one clean title defense, in a triple threat with jeff hardy and edge. Although you could argue that Jeff hit edge with the swanton, it's not like punk cheated or anything in the match. He just got Jeff out of the way so he could pin Edge himself.

However, I do agree with you that Punk is, right now, a fall-back champion, but that still makes him a champion. Punk is what? 30 years old? He still has another 10-15 years, and even more if he chooses to stay with the business for that long. Plus, transition champion or not, the WWE has still given this kid two title reigns. For now, Punk's in a good place, and will probably be in an even better one as this heel phase has time to fully develope and he can really start to antagonize the fans.

I can see where you are going with it and I completely agree. Why is the WHC going back and forth for a month reign? Edge had it for a month, Jeff for like 5 minutes, CM Punk for one month and now Jeff has it again. I attended the Vengence PPV in Cleveland where he didn't even compete and lost his WHC in the scramble and now after this PPV where my father and I watched, he loses again. I have become a huge CM Punk fan. Love his entrance music, the tattoos are cool and loved his speech about parents and their kids...why give him that speech and have him lose that night. Build up to only break down? Is this going to be a long standing feud? I heard on Smackdown that John Morrison challenged the winner of that match...another face vs. face main event? Why is that happening? We had ECW title face vs. face, we had the tag titles heel vs. heel and then the triple threat we had two faces and one heel. What ever happened to face vs. heel?

CM Punk, I hope, will get it back and may be have a longer run with his new gimmick.

It's called character building people !!!

You can't simply call a guy up to the main roster and slap a belt on him without feeling out the crowd reaction first.

It could easily be one with the tag straps as evidenced recently by MNM and Deuce & Domino. The IC strap can also be used like they did with Santino Marella when he won the belt, albeit it was in Italy when he won.

For the past year, CM Punk has been stuck in obscurity. No one gave two shits when he cashed in the briefcase the first time as a face, so they took the belt off him. Then when he cashed in the second time as a heel (for all intensive purposes he was), he began to generate mass heel heat and it looks like his turn has come full circle.

Edge has never had a lengthy title reign, yet he was arguably the biggest heel the company has had in the past decade... so that should tell you something. Good wrestlers or entertainers don't need a belt - they need fan reactions. CM Punk has that now and the way the WWE did it was brilliant.

Once that wrestler starts to lose some his fan reaction, that's when title reigns happen in order to get fans behind that wrestler once again, whether for the good or for the bad.

If the most popular wrestlers always carried the belt... Undertaker, HBK, Cena, HHH and Mysterio would always have a title... not just fans.

i have to agree with ztwhite on this one, punk was one of those guys who honed his skills in the indy scene so he knows what its like somewhat to be in the wrestling business.

so when Vince or WWE see the potential that punk has they want to do what they can with him, maybe not a fallback champion but a test to see where his optimum potential lies...

many superstars have become legends, and big names and have stayed on the midcard there whole career... (goldust, honkey tonk man, koko b ware inducted into HOF last year i think)

i think they are testing punk to see where he lies best i think WWE has learned not as a tag champ, but they are seeing what he can do as a face champ or not and as a heel champ or not, and when they find where he is best suited place him there to draw ratings

zwhite, the most over guys (Cena, Orton, HHH, Edge and Taker) do keep getting the titles. So when Cm Punk comes along why does he always get bollocks title reigns?

Punk is still very young and has at least 15 more good years left. In 5 more years very few will remember his first 2 title reigns. He will get his one day.
