WWE- 2006

Pre-Show Stalwart
Was 2006 a bad year or good year. Some say it was year things went downhill and some say it was just another year. To be 100% honest it was my fav year. Yes I am a young fan(I am 19) but I liked 2006. The hate Cena got made me enjoy the show more and I was a cena fan. I also liked King Booker, ECW at the time, Cena vs edge, RatedRKO vs DX, and some other stuff. I understand if others did not like that year but I enjoyed it.

I thought 2006 was good year.

Started off with Edge stealing the WWE title from Cena, then Angle jumping to Smackdown and winning the WHC.

Wrestlemania was really good. A classic hardcore match between Edge and Mick Foley, and a great main event with Cena vs HHH.

ECW came back, and RVD finally one the title.

Meanwhile, Jim Cornette was running TNA, and Angle jumped ship later in the year.

Later in the year ECW began to wane, and most of the Smackdown pay per views weren't that enthralling, but overall I still think it was a good year.

That was the year I really got into wrestling too and it's my favorite as well. WrestleMania 22 is also favorite for me.
DX, Rated-RKO, Umaga, The Great Khali, Rey winning the World Heavyweight Championship, ECW and Randy Orton vs. Hulk Hogan at SummerSlam all come to mind when thinking about this year.

This was a great year.
I started watching in 2005, but i haven't missed a Raw since 2006. That was the year i fell in love with WWE, and when i sparked an intrest in the then one hour TNA shows.
Great year too me.

2006 was a solid year for WWE, Wrestlemania 22 was one of the best in recent years. Hogan and Orton feud was entertaining, HHH putting Cena over clean. The massive push for Edge as a main event heel, the formation of Rated RKO...GOOD TIMES

The first year that any new wrestling fan starts watching and becomes interested in pro-wrestling is always the best year.

For me, that year was 2006. 2006 brings to mind one wrestler straight away - Edge. I loved Edge from the very beginning, no one seemed cooler to me then the Rated-R Superstar. 2006 was his year. He stole the show at WM22, cashed in the first MITB and set the standard for future MITB holders, won the WWE title twice, and had by far the greatest feud of the year with John Cena.

That aside, you had the return of DX, the return of ECW, JBL as an announcer, Kurt Angle tearing up SmackDown, Rated-Rko, Randy vs. Hogan, the return of Jeff, and possibly the last year that tag-teaming was well in shape.

2006 = Great year!

It had its ups and downs. They had a few clear advantages in 2006 though.

This year can't be forgiven for the debut of Khali though. Squashing Mysterio and Undertaker, them the God awful Punjab Prison Match (the less said about that the better). Let's not go into the business side of Khali's push and the viewers in India and all that crap, as a wrasslin fan it sucked!

On a positive note, we witnessed John Cena battle Edge's addiction to cocaine that year. That was a really good feud, you have to commend Edge for being the perfect Joker to Cena's Batman!

We saw the reformation of DX as well. Who didn't want to see DX one more time? There segments may have been on the hokey side, though. In fact, '06 DX was more reminiscent of Ferrell and Reilly in Stepbrothers.

We got another Eddie Guerrero storyline featured around Mysterio (completely unnecessary).

And who could forget the return of ECW? We all knew it want going to stick around though... and by the time December to Dismember rolled around I think we pretty much knew how it was going to turn out.

Those are a few of the spots from 2006. I think it was a good year, but also 50% a flop. Considering the talent that was still performing regularly that would fade away gradually since then, the WWE really did deliver some grade A shit where there's no excuse.

IMO, 2006 was the last great year of the WWE.

It's like what aa_sleepingpowder said, it had its ups and downs, but I feel like it had more ups than downs. Lemme explain:

Edge winning his FIRST WWE Championship. The first MITB cashing in that was actually cool IMO. This was The year of Edge as I saw it. He beat Mick Foley at WrestleMania and became a premier Main Eventer and never looked back. He also put on one of my favorite RAW segments with the Live Sex Celebration.

Mysterio winning the 2006 Royal Rumble and winning the World Title at WrestleMania.

The Amazing match that Kurt Angle had with The Undertaker at No Way Out.

WrestleMania 22. This Mania is pretty much in my Top 5. The epicness of the event speaks for itself.

Debut of Umaga.

The rebirth of ECW and RVD winning the WWE AND ECW Titles.

The return of DX.

The birth of Rated RKO.

Nobody's mentioned this yet, but what about Unforgiven 2006? The second best ppv that year next to WrestleMania IMO. I mean, Hell in a Cell, TLC, Trish's last match, Jeff Hardy's first ppv back in how long? Need I say more?

Also, on a personal note, Carlito slowly started his build to becoming a legit top face talent on RAW. I remember a promo he had with Mr. McMahon on an episode of RAW. I believe that was when Carlito officially arrived. The fans loved him, his gimmick had finally come to its peak, and he had improved his ring abilities. I actually had him pegged to win the Royal Rumble in 2007, but of course he got canned :disappointed:

Cena and Edge definitely had feud of the year, hands down.

Now, for the down moments:

Rey Mysterio's Title Reign.

The May 19th Angle.

The McMahons vs HBK and GOD?

The Impostor Kane. They REALLY missed the boat on that one. If they were gonna do this, they shoulda brought in somebody that was at least the same size as Kane, or at least bigger, not smaller than him.

The Mick Foley vs Ric Flair feud. I don't know. I feel like that feud could've been so much better than what it was.

Oh yeah, and December to Dismember. Yeesh.

2006 was a terrible year for me.

Raw: Basically this was the DX show. Feuding with the McMahons and the Spirit Squad over the whole summer. Yikes. Even them butting heads with Edge and Orton couldn't save it for me. Cena/Edge seemed like an afterthought all things considered.

Smackdown: With Batista being injured, Smackdown was suffering. Almost everyone hated Mysterio's reign but there wasn't a lot of other options unless you wanted Undertaker as champion. I didn't want to endure that torture. The only great thing to me about Smackdown that year was JBL doing commentary.

High Points
1. JBL
2. Debut of Great Khali
3. Test's kick to RVD at Survivor Series
4. Mickie James

Low Points
1. Everything else

2006 was a throwback year to the Attitude Era to some degree, so if you loved the Attutide Era more so the years 1997-2000 you'll have enjoyed 2006.

The PPV's I enjoyed from the top 4 were EXTREMELY STRONG and Survivor Series 2006 was probably the last great Survivor Series.

Without going into a long winded reply 2006 was one of the best years of Wrestling I've enjoyed since getting into Wrestling.

On the contrary, I thought the top four PPV's were average.

Royal Rumble: Cena beating Edge wasn't that surprising. The rumble itself was mediocre and Henry in the main event? I'll pass.

Wrestlemania: I always thought Edge/Foley was overrated and Cena/HHH just didn't feel like a WM main event to me. The triple threat could have been special but didn't get enough time. The Boogeyman had a match. The Boogeyman?

Summerslam: I barely remember this PPV at all save for the Batista/Booker match which was horrendous.

Survivor Series: Booker T and Batista had yet another bad match and the Team Rated RKO vs. Team DX was funny. The only redeeming thing about this PPV was Test kicking the hell out of RVD.

I thought the best PPV of 2006 was No Way Out with Orton vs. Mysterio and Taker vs. Angle.

I’m with LJL. 2006 didn’t do much for me. It was the worst year since 1999. During the second half of 2005 WWE lost Chris Jericho, Christian, and Eddie Guerrero. In 2006 they lost JBL and Kurt Angle, and Batista and Chris Benoit missed significant time. That’s a lot of talent lost in a short amount of time. There was too much DX, too much Spirit Squad, and too much McMahon. DX wasn’t funny to me in 2006 and weren’t nearly as entertaining as they were in 1997. RVD was given the ball and immediately fumbled it worse than anyone else ever had. Hogan’s angle with Randy Orton was a complete flop. Every year has its highlights but overall I’d say 2006 was a bad year.

2006 had it's good points. Cena vs. Edge offered a different sort of take on the usual Cena rivalry as Edge legitimately came across as a threat as opposed to Jericho and Angle who were merely building blocks for Cena's credibility. The return of ECW was exciting for awhile and the One Night Stand Show was yet again excellent. WrestleMania had its highlights as always with Foley/Edge and McMahon vs. Michaels both being highly entertaining along with both main event matches (thought the triple threat was far too short). On SmackDown, JBL was gold in the commentary booth, Kennedy was interesting (amazing, I know) and I for one loved King Booker. Oh, and Taker vs. Angle was bad-ass.

Outside of all that though, the year sucked ass. ECW got old very quickly and did nothing for a lot of people. Only when they began to re-invent it the following year did it become partially interesting again. A lot of talent disappeared as Brain said, but very few of them were replaced and instead we had DX eating up far too much air-time in a nostalgia run which thankfully died after Hunter tore his quad...again. Khali was facing Taker in a near duplication of Taker vs. Gonzalez from a decade earlier and it still sucked. Oh yes, and there was the dreaded Liver Enzymes debacle of The Great American Bash. Don't even get me started on how bloody poor Mysterio's title reign was. And to cap it off, Eddie Guerrero was still a character on TV despite being six feet under. That was distasteful to say the least.

I'm not 2006's biggest fan as you can tell. It gets a thumbs down from me.

The first Money In The Bank cash in by Edge was CLASSIC ! That will never be topped, especially waiting until after Cena survived 45 minutes in cage with half the WWE Roster, and Edge already lost an IC Title Match vs Flair earlier that night.

I think 2006 was realy the first time Edge got a good year as main event heel, he wasnt a joke, he wasnt injured, he was monster bad ass rulebreaking bad guy, exactly what the company needed. I enjoyed him more than Orton in that role, although I liked them together in Rated RKO.

I did think the DX-McMahon thing went on too long, although I enjoyed Vince getting possibly the worst beat down in a match he ever had vs HBK at Mania.

Foley gave us two last memorable matches vs Edge & Flair before leaving.

Cena - HHH was actually a good fued and a very good match, one of Cena's best.

I did not like Hogan-Orton - It was a good thing they moved it further down on the SummerSlam card because as a match it would not have looked good coming after either The I Quit Match or The DX cage Match.

The Spirit Squad got old quick, I was glad to see them sent into the sunset, literally geting beaten at SS despite having a 4 on 1 advantage then literally being boxed in a crate and mailed to WWE Headquarters by DX. It was fitting ending, somewhat funny, but brought their feuds with DX & Flair to a definative close.

By the way, what ever happened to Kenny Dykstra ? He was partnered with Edge for awhile after Spirit Squad thing mercifully came to an end then he disappeared ?

WWE had a decent year in 2006. It wasn't their best year by any means, but it was better than some give it credit for. DX got back together feuding with the likes of Umaga, The Spirit Squad, and The McMahons. Cena and Edge had one of the better feuds of the year. Edge cashed in the first Money In the Bank briefcase to set the standard for future cash in's. ECW was brought back (although many would argue this was one of the bad parts of the year) as a 3rd brand. Edge and Orton formed one of my personal favorite teams in Rated RKO. Raw had the Papa Roach song. Jeff Hardy returned. Cena's year long title reign began. Last but not least, the hardcore match between Edge and Foley. A lot of good things happened in 2006 and while it was one of the weaker years of the past decade, I still enjoyed it because it had more than enough good moments to look back on.
