Would WWF have beaten WCW had the 1997 screwjob never happened?

Bill Lesnar

Occasional Pre-Show
Bill lesnar recently viewed the Rise and fall of WCW DVD and it got him thinking on a few things.

in the 90s. the Montreal Screw job was easily one of the most talked about matches. If the WWf had stayed on their original plan with Bret dropping it in the states, would anyone have cared to tune into Raw like they did after Survivor Series?. Montreal also began Vinces character, who was huge back then and everyone inc Bill Lesnar wanted to see what he did and his fued with Austin.

Although it could be argued that Austin and Rock were destined for success anyway, and Bret did fuck all in WCW. The Screw job did a great job of making new storyline in the wwf, and getting people talking about their prodcut. WCW was huge in 1997, with their roster containing legends like flair, hall, luger, savage and off course hogan and Sting as well as your Deans,Eddies, Benoits etc it could be argued that their roster at the time was stronger than WWF of 2000 - 2001, and what happened in Montreal drew people towards the wwe product more so than WCW.

So yes, would WWF have defeated WCW had Vince not screwed Bret

for a while wcw was kicking ass. they had the older established names & people turned out in mass to see them. but it wasnt meant to be.

i would think wwe would still have won the whole thing. the creative team\leadership of wcw proved they couldnt hold up in the long run. wcw had star power & the nwo, but it wasnt enough to keep guys in atlanta. eventually vince just beat them down & took the talent.

wcw took some big guys away from vince, but in the long run, he got better talent back. he had the money & clarity of vision to know where they were going. wcw was unfortunately a playground for certian guys to run over talent while drawing huge paychecks. they never seemed to have a good idea on what to do in the future.

in the end, vince won. either way it went, he had the brain& cash to get it done. wcw might

The Montreal Screwjob and the Vince McMahon character drew many viewers in, controversy creates cash. But I think WWF still would have beaten WCW.

You mentioned WCW had all the bigger names at the time Flair, Sting, Hogan etc. But I think one thing we learned from WCW and even TNA today is that Big Names and Star Power isn't enough to beat WWF/WWE. You need to continuously put on solid and entertaining feuds that are fresh yet familiar. WCW hit gold with the NWO but they rode that horse for so long it became stale. The WWF on the other hand used their top stars in familiar yet different ways, an example is Vince and Austin. How long did those two feud and how many matches did they have? More than most can count. Yet it never got old because WWF they changed up what they were fighting over or bringing people new people into the feud while not overloading it.

Simply put the WWF beat WCW because they had better writing and booking. Not because of the Screwjob, although that may have brought some more viewers in at the time and helped create the Mr. McMahon character (that character would have came out regardless though).

BTW Glad to see you back Mr. Lesnar, I voted for you for Rookie of the Year.
