Will we ever see another Iron Man match??

shafe_41

DON'T HINDER JINDER
I thought about this today and am totally puzzled to figure out an answer myself to my own question.

Do you think we will ever see another Ironman Match? If so, who with? If not... why not?

Here's what I kinda sorta think... I would love to say yes because that means we'd get to see who the top 2 superstars really are at that particular time. I think the 2 in that match, would be the top 2 without debate. Now I know Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle did a 30 minute Ironman Match before, but this is discussion of a one hour match. And I know there's TNA haters out there who wouldn't watch that match if their life depended on it, but that 30 minute match with those 2, was damn good. Really damn good. But I digress...

I don't believe we will see one again... at least not in the foreseeable future. The superstars don't seem to be conditioned the same way anymore. John Cena could maaaaaaaybe do it, but that means he has to learn some new wrestling moves and let's face it, in 4 years, he hasn't yet. Randy Orton would be a better candidate... but his character isn't the type that needs or wants to go 60 minutes in a match. He doesn't want to prove who the better man is... he wants to beat someone one time no matter what it takes. So we would need to see Orton take on some kind of Bret Hart character. So let's hear what everyone thinks!

I was thinking about this the other day, actually. To me, they need to have one per era, essentially.

HBK/Hart was the battle of the "New Generation" superstars.

HHH/Rock was the battle of the "Attitude Era" superstars.

So really, the next era's two participants have to be some duo of: John Cena (but that would be tiresome as he isn't too flexible when it comes to the ring-work), Edge, Randy Orton, or to an extent maybe CM Punk if he ends up improving both in the ring and in terms of character importance within the next year or two.

BUT....honestly....the next Iron Man match that I'd like to see would actually be HBK's last match, against HHH, at WrestleMania 26 or 27 or whenever he ends up wanting to retire, with HBK going over.

Maan i havnt seen an ironman match in years. Im pretty sure they took it of the raw vs smackdown games. Wich upsets me cause they were awsome matches. I would like to see this as shawn michaels last match

Michaels vs HHH vs Orton in a triple threat hardcore iron man match :P i would pay just to see that match go for an hour

Well we were treated to an excellent Raw match that saw Cena and HBK last for an hour after Wrestlemania 24. Obviously both of those two men can last. But a match I would love to see is an Iron Man Match between Edge and Chris Jericho. With Chris Jericho's firing from Raw, It would be great for him to appear on Smackdown, and challenger Edge to an Iron Man Match at Wrestlemania. Both of these men have shown they can go for a very long time in the match, and to put so much faith into this match at Wrestlemania would be spectacular. It would steal the show, and be talked about for decades. It has the potential to be a Five Star match.

I actually doubt it. But if we do it would probably only be a 30 min one being that wwe hardly goes for matches longer than 20 min.
i would love to see a hbk vs rey mysterio iron man match. back at the eddie tribute show these two had a great match even tho it was only like 10 mins long. If they give these two a 30 min iron man match it would be amazing. I'd rather have a quick pace 30 min match than a long tiring 60 min match tho.

Quick answer: No. WWE doesnt excatly like putting on exciting matches, and an Irn Man match would be too much effort for some of the lazy asses in the locker room

It is a shame, they are trying harder and harder to get away from wrestling

Yes, when WWE has to do another three hour Raw they'll need to pad it out with something. They'd done thw King Of The Ring & the Slammys. They'll need something to do, that's when they bring out the Iron Man concept.

It's great that WWE have realized that really long matches are boring, so they've cut them down from an hour to 30 minutes.

I think an Iron Man match could work, but maybe not at an hour. The way I'd like to see one that hasn't been done would be to have a guy get out to a big lead, like 3 or 4-0 and then let the other guy make a comeback. The only flaw in that is that after half an hour people would get bored and likely change the channel. That's the issue with iron mans, they just go too long and the attention span isn't there. HHH and Rock did it well by having something like 10 falls in an hour and using moves other than finishers to get pins. That was a nice touch because it makes you feel like you could get a win at any time. To sum up, yes, there will be another one. It's a cool concept for a match that can be changed around a lot. Multiman matches, tag matches, gimmick Iron Man matches, the list goes on and on.

When it comes to the people in attendance at the show, I think an Iron Man match would be good if management wants to improve sales at the concession stands and lengthen the lines at the bathrooms. These types of matches are great for people who like actual wrestling, but most of today's audience has neither the desire nor patience to watch a tactical struggle that lasts an hour.

When watching RAW or Smackdown, I sometimes glance at the people in the front rows. It amazes me how many of them are looking away from the ring. If the action that's taking place ten feet in front of them can't hold their interest, I wonder what the people farther away from the ring are doing. It still annoys me to see a person at a sporting event talking on a cell phone (as if having the comfort of 20,000 people around them isn't enough).

In my opinion, the only thing that keeps the audience on the beam is that the matches are short. Iron Man matches are great and I loved HBK/Bret and HHH/Rock, but WWE is smart enough to know that the vast amount of their target audience isn't interested in long matches.

LOL, your post is funny because Iron Man Matches are the antithesis of exciting matches. Iron Man matches are boring, until you get to the last 5 minutes or so. The Hart vs. HBK match was ridiculously boring. If you take that match and condense it to about 30-35 minutes, it becomes a very good match. And I still haven't made it through the HHH vs. Rock Iron Man match without falling asleep.

1 Hour Iron Man matches are boring. I do remember that Angle had an Ironman match against Shawn Michaels (I think??) a couple years back. And, like has been said, Angle had an Iron Man match against Joe not too long ago.

Here's the biggest problem with Iron Man matches. 30 minute Iron Man matches are stupid, and 1 Hour Iron Man matches are boring. Most main-event matches go 20-30 minutes already, WITHOUT a pinfall, but now we're supposed to believe that there will be 5 pinfalls in 30 minutes? Silly. The only way to pull off a reasonable 30 minute Iron Man match is no falls until the end...but then that gets to easy to predict. And 1 Hour Iron Mans are just boring.

So, will the WWE put on another Iron Man match? Probably. But, I hope not. If they do anything like that, it needs to be like what Cena and HBK did last year on Raw...an hour match, where a pinfall could come at any time.

I agree with Sly. If you tell people right now "hey, this match is going to go on for an hour," peope will look for points in the match where they can tune out. If it's at a PPV, I'll take 10 minutes to play one of the bar games, set up a round of beer pong, etc. Because what am I going to miss?

But if a match between two capable superstars just HAPPENS to go for an hour, awesome! That's what creates legends.

I was watching the Mr. Perfect DVD Sunday night, and it discussed the one-hour draw Perfect had with Nick Bockwinkel. Nobody saw that coming, but as a match it's a legend today.

And to tie this in with one of my other threads, whether it's an hour long match or an Ironman match, I'd throw a vote behind Edge vs Orton. Those two could DEFINATELY pull it off.

The funny thing is that that's how I have always felt about the Rumbe, the Rumble has always seemed like a long boring match to me until you get to the last 5-10 mins.

The problem with Edge vs. Orton in an Iron Man match is that neither character is really the type that would be for an Iron Man match, Iron Man matches are generally reserved for 2 wrestlers who want to prove who the better man really is, I think Edge and Orton could pull it off endurance wise, do get me wrong I just think in order for this match to happen at least one of them would have to turn face, and personally I don't see that happening and don't really want it to happen either

I think the Iron Man match can be a good match with the right people, I think Cena could easily pull it off, especially with a guy like HBK, put this guys in a feud trading victories, then have one of them come out and cut a promo saying they want to find out once and for all who the better man really is, and then they issues a challenge for an Iron Man match, this is something I could see happening at a PPV like NOC

Another possibility is for them to modify the match somewhat, one idea, and this is really more something I could see TNA do than WWE, add more than two wrestlers to the match and and eliminate the one with the fewest falls after a certain amount of time, for example if there were four wrestlers in the match then the one with the fewest falls would get eliminated after 20 mins., and 20 mins. later the next wrestler with the fewest falls gets eliminated, then the final two would go for the final 20 mins., if it's a triple threat you just switch the elimination for 20 mins. to 30 mins., you also just do away with the eliminations completely and have all of them go for the entire 60 mins., you could also do something like a three stages of hell match and have the stipulation change every 20 mins., have the match start out as a regular Iron Man match, than after 20 mins. switch it to a No DQ match, than finish up the final 20 mins. as a Cage match or something

Now with all that being said, one of the biggest the problem with the Iron Man match is that you can just as easily replace it with a 2 out of 3 falls match and prolly get a more interesting result

Iron Man matches work to an extent. The one that is often the most praised of the modern era, Hart vs. Michaels, is the match I findt he most boring of the three. As far as the 30 minute Iron Man matches, those aren't a true Iron Man match in my opinion, the Iron Man match is an hour.

Triple H vs. The Rock was a definitive match of teh Attitue Era. I thought that match was fairly enjoyable. Also, with Angle and Brock Lesnar, the often forgetten Iron Man match, it had a similar thing.

Those matches can work, when it's not the silly 1-0 scenario. A guaranteed time frame, with a heel going up by 3 or 4 falls, creates a sense of panic in the fans that the heel has a huge lead and the face isn't going to be able to over come the odds. The Iron Man match provides something typical matches don't, that sense of urgency and a sense that the clock is also an enemy.

I love Iron Man Matches. I don't think they should be as common as a Hell in a Cell match. I think one Iron Man match an era is sufficient enough, and Cena vs. Orton should probably be that matchup.

We'll see one again for sure. I agree it has to have the element that a pinfall can happen at any moment like the Cena vs HBK had. That match was not an advertised Irn Man match but if your gonna advertise one you need to keep it fresh like that one. I'm still not a big believer in alot of falls for this reason. Say Cena is in the match...how often does he lose a match, very rarily. So why would he get beat 3 or 4 or 5 times in an hour. Ideally i'd like too see a 2-1 finish. Ths way you get too see that both guys are capable of pinning the other while they still look strong. In the WWE today i believe there is only five guys who could do it.

My rankings of performing an Iron Man match:
1. John Cena
2. Shawn Michaels
3. Edge
4. Triple H
5. Randy Orton

I'm basing these rankings on my opinion on the type of in ring feel they give to the audience. Clealy HBK has ore moves to entertain than Cena. Cena just gives you the feel he can score a pin at any time and can sell real well and make you think hes gonna get pinned. Dont get me wrong i think all these guys can do it and i wouldnt complain about seeing any combo go at it.

Ideally...
Cena vs Orton
Cena vs HBK
Cena vs Edge
HBK vs HHH
HBK vs Edge

I think in that someday, not too long in the future, we will be seeing a Randy Orton vs Edge iron man match. It seems like a good way to bring it back, and these two men can put on a great match, and I certainly would want to see them go at it for one hour. Neither of them needs to be face, just two cocky heels trying to one up each other untill they take the final test: The Iron Man Match. They would destroy each other using weapon after weapon untill one wins. In this case, I'll go with Edge. I think he would just deserve this win after all he has done. I want this to happen someday, and I think lots of people would.
