I see a lot of names like CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Chris Jericho, and Dolph Ziggler being thrown around. That doesn't really surprise me, since they're all hot-button players for internet fans at the moment, but what does surprise me is that there have only been six of these matches in WWE history (w/ 2 more in WCW and one recently in TNA). WE're talking some of the biggest names in the industry in the past few decades going at it for 60 minutes... Personally I think Cena and Orton were completely boring, but the rest were all amazing classics. (By the way, to avoid all the hate, it's nothing against Cena and Orton individually. I like them, but that match was SO boring and predictable).
I'm sure Daniel Bryan and CM Punk could go 60 minutes and put on one hell of a wrestling contest. But do I want to see it? Will the mainstream fans keep Raw on for an hour to see it? Punk can electrify the crowd, but he's got to have a polarizing figure on the other end. I'm sure that if they went 60 minutes, the crowd might get into it just because of how talented both men are... But 60 minutes!? For a WWE crowd!? In 2012!? I think we're giving your average modern WWE crowd a bit too much credit if you think they won't get bored and click off an Ironman match between Punk and DBD.
I love Ziggler, but why would creative ever want to put him in this type of match at this stage of his career. All 6 of these WWE Ironman matches have been the "final straw" between two guys considered the best, to prove who really takes the cake. We're talking Randy Orton vs. John Cena. Triple H vs The Rock. Brock Lesnar vs Kurt Angle! HBK vs Bret Hart! Who in the current landscape is really on "that level" where we could conceivably NEED an Ironman match to sort out their issues?
Right now the only real high caliber match-up I could see running is John Cena and CM Punk, but I think that ship has long past sailed, with Cena heading in a different direction and Punk being the new "protected" face on Raw. I just don't see the match being necessary right now - not that one wouldn't be AWESOME. I guess I don't want to see it thrown out there for no real reason... Now, give them a year to turn somebody like Sheamus into one of the top faces, maybe turn Orton back into a top heel, and THAT would be a great rivalry. Orton and Sheamus already have slight history, and Sheamus has gotten so over they could put on one hell of an Ironman. Bottom line: you gotta make sure both guys deserve it, it makes sense to a story, and the rivalry is really at a point where the Ironman match is "needed" to finalize everything.
