Will Chris Masters ever be.... Anything?

Dark Match Jobber
Now the Masterpiece has been around for sometime now, even with the firing and re-hiring but he hasn't really accomplished anything. These days he's just a modern day jobber.

Early in his first stint we seen flashes of a push, flashes of potential yet to no avail. Now I love the Masterlock, yes Im a aware that its just a full nelson but the way he does it makes it looks like a legit submission maneuver. The Masterlock challenge was great for what it was. But needed more tv time to ever be anything more.

Then during his return era, we got him a slimmer toned Chris Master but yet still in terrific shape. Only to become a nipple jumping to music comedy segment, dont get me wrong... funny at first, annoying the second, third times. Later Drafted over to smackdown and now has become nothing but a Superstars filler with the beloved Kerwin White.

My question is.. Is the masterpiece a bust?
What does he need? How can he become main eventer or even a consistent mid-carder? Im a fan.

First things first I think he needs to go heel..
Develop 3 to 6 moves that he can trademark, to set up for the masterlock.
Maybe a Diva to escort him, or place him in a tag team or something.

Masters and Skip Sheffield? Maybe?

I am one of his biggest fans, and I think he is getting pathetically underpushed, and unfortunately I don't think he's ever going to be getting the push I've been waiting for since he returned last year.

If they were to turn him heel again it would be for the best, mostly because they would probably bring back his old theme music. Seriously, right now he's using jobber music, I'm pretty sure that is a sign that they have no intent to push him. You know for a while I was thinking that they woudn't have brought him back to the 'E if they were just going to job him out but then I remembered how he is friends with a certain mainevent wrestler on RAW and he was probably just brought back to the company because that certain maineventer would be happy. So they might have never had any plans to push him in the first place.

If they were to go back 100% to the Masterpiece gimmick he would get over. With the cape entrance and the pyro and all that. It's flashy, kids like flashy things, voila, he'd get over.

Your idea about trademarking 3 moves is a good one. Since most people who aren't jobbers in WWE have trademark moves, he would be taken more seriously if he had them too. He would also be taken more seriously if he, you know, won a match. Really I think it's all up to WWE to start pushing him, I have no doubt he could get over if it weren't for them jobbing him out hell

I don't see why not.

I'm a Masters fan. I find him to be interesting, and quite underrated. He would make a killer monster face, like a non-giant Big Show. He has a great look, and I find him entertaining in the ring.

It's easy to make someone credible; you just have them start winning matches. Masters can start at the low end of the totem pole, squashing people like Chavo, before moving up and beating more heels until he's the viable midcard contender he has the potential to be.

Simple, but effective.

ive always liked masters but more as a heel than a boobie dancer. i think if he was in the i.c title picture it would be wonderful he has a great finsiher...pretty good on the mic...and he is just built like a pro. i think a kofi masters fued would be great...throw in dolph and christain and u have classic tag team bouts fatal 4 ways and i would love to see the return of the masterlock challenge

you Guys have some good points... but im totally against him staying babyface, its just not for him. The Old Masterpiece with the Cape, theme music and pyro would be awesome still has it always was.. Lets Throw him into a Alliance with Drew "Mcmahon" right now, have him sorta as an enforcer of Drew as his get his push.. While Drew is pushing up to main event, lets have Master follow thru with a IC title run, and great fued with Kofi and Christian and maybe the Fight for the right to never win anything Matt Hardy. But I think he deserves a chance. More than Joey Mercury.

I dont see him as a bust because they never put him in the main event scene for a decent enough time so we could see if he was the real deal i liked masters a heel but now on smackdown i think he could be a solid mid uperr carder but not if he stays face.I honestly think he has one of the most underrated submissions with the masterlock. And thats another thing that would be good for him is bring back the master lock challenge.Maybe you could turn him heel like this maybe ask someone like christian if he would like to try the challenge and when christian taps have master leave it on thous creating a feud between them and master's again as a heel.

The first thing to do is turn him heel. Then I think he needs a new finisher, I think the masterlock is getting stale, he could maybe have a powerbomb called the masterbomb or a chokeslam. Also I think he could have a diva for his manager, he isn't that good on the mic so maybe he could have Jillian. His gimmick could be "I'm the toughest wrestler in the lockeroom" and on every Smackdown Jillian could get people from the crowd and Masters beats them down. Then the Intercontinental champion comes out and says "if you're really that tough fight me" then BAM! he's in the title picture. I think this gimmick would be entertaining and would atleast get him on Smackdown every week, if not get him in the mid card title picture.

I was a masters fan,
Durring his first stint,
He was good in-ring,
& had well past proper MIC skills,
His feud w/ Big Show&Kane, and Michaels defitnetly shot him up in my ranks,
What Happened??
He was caught taking pills,
Screwed himself up in unbeleivable ways,
He came back slimmer,
Then got suspended again,
& Now he's back and not only is he slimmer but duller,
If that's him or WWE holding him back,
IDK,
But w/ new stars like Bourne, Sheamus, Kofi, Cody,
I don't really feel like i'm missing anything

I would like to see Masters as a heel again. I feel as if he was much better when he was playing the bad guy. As a face, he just seems goofy, and as long he continues down this path, I don't think anything will change for him. I went to a Raw taping not too long ago, and I remember seeing him wrestle a match that was taped for Superstars, and it wasn't bad at all. The match wasn't great or very good, but it was pretty solid. Masters isn't terrible in the ring, he has the physique, the look, and he does have a personality, so he could be a solid mid card guy on Smackdown.

simply no. he's terrible in the ring. he's just like rob terry. big and ripped but not a wrestler. and yes he was much better as a heel but he still never really got over. a new gimmick might work to revive his career but i dont see a bright future for him in wwe

I don’t mind Masters but he’s not going to get a main event push. I don’t think he should even be mid card. He’s been beaten to the punch by guys like Kofi, McIntyre, Punk, Sheamus, Tyson Kidd, DH Smith, Bryan etc. There’s so many more guys that are more deserving of TV time than him.

I like his position now, it’s fun to see him occasionally. But I would rather see everyone else than him. Sorry Masters, I like you a few years ago but you just don’t cut it anymore.

Sorry guys, but I really don't think Masters is ever going to get over. He had a decent little run in 2005-2006 and I think that's going to be known as his prime. Once someone is buried in that lower mid card spot it's almost impossible to get out. The fans don't take him seriously. He could be handed the pink slip at any time. He could also be the new Val Venis. He could end up staying in WWE in that lower mid card spot for years getting on tv once a month or so. Fans will likely forget he's on the roster and when he makes a rare apperance they will wonder why he still is. I doubt he will ever do anything significant again.

Chris Masters was something back in the day over on RAW before he left the company and while he didn't do anything that memorable, he's done enough as his character. He debuted as a gimmick of being someone who was chiseled so intricately that a artists conceived the shape of his body. The explorations in the heel version are over and him being a face has gotten nowhere about the undercard. As it stands, Masters is being used as a wrestler who can defeat people in his division of the card easily, yet anything above the mid-card will see him lose.

SD is packed with mid-card talent and what Masters brings to the table isn't needed on the main show. The time allocated to feature stars can be used elsewhere much more appropriately for wrestlers who have a future with the company. Maybe Masters will shock us all and show us why he deserves to be relevant... but until he becomes a more interesting face or changes his gimmick, he ain't going nowhere.

The nipple dance can work. Lex Luger used it often , I think he even used it in a pose down with Hollywood Hulk and/or Big Poppa Pump
If they want to push him then a heel turn, and he does make a more credible heel
He showed he can work with Maria. I would really like to see him work for a bit with Beth Phoenix, find him a tag partner with good mic skillz and the could work a programs with the Harts/Osos

Chris Masters can be so much more. He looks dominant and he's not all that bad in the ring. A heel turn, his old music and entrance, and a power slam or back breaker to set up the master lock, and he's set to go. I don't see what the point was of bringing him back if all that was going to be done was to make him a jobber. I hope Masters gets something at some point as far as a push goes, but being a jobber on SmackDown usually says it all and the writing seems to be on the wall sore him...

Turn him heel, let him gain some momentum in the mid-card. He's got the look, he's no worse in the ring than some of the others they let hang around, and I find him entertaining. His lack of mic skills seems to be from NEVER getting a chance to work on them.

He doesn't have to go to the top, but in the mid-card he could be a solid workhorse for the 'E. Rebuild his credibility a little and let him have the Mark Henry/Golddust role on Smackdown.

^ I agree that Masters could be more than what he is currently, right now he's just lost in the shuffle with nothing to do. I say give the guy a solid midcard push, he can be something if you let him

I don't think Masters will ever amount to anything in his second run. Just like he never did in his first run. I never really enjoyed anything he's done. Any 'high-profile' match he's been in, he's been carried by guys who can work, ex: Carlito, Big Show, HBK, Kane, to name a few.

Never really enjoyed him, still baffled as to why WWE hired him back.

A few years back I would have said yes but not anymore. He's in Chavo territory now, he's super jobber now. I can't remember the last time he win a match. He seems to have lost all his fire for wrestling. The last time he looked decent was with Eve on his side, but that's been over for a while. Maybe they should bring back the Masterlock Challenge, or maybe his next Superstars match (vs Jack Swagger) will lead to something.

Bill Lesnar thought Masters was great chamber time in 2006. He and Carlito were awesome as the two heel rookies giving Cena a hard time and Bill lesnar loved every secound of it. Bill Lesnar loves Masters finisher which gave him real power seeing as though the masterlock was unbreakable. Masters had good fueds with Kane,SHow and HBk aswell. Obviously Vince didnt feel Masters was up to the task, Although Bill Lesnar feels Masters is being wasted seeing as as though he did such a great job in 2005..their is nothing Bill Lesnar can do about it except persistently ask wwe headqauters about it

^^ DIS IZ TEH LULZ.

Anyway, Masters hasn't been relevant since his main event push in late 2005/early 2006. I think he started to fade away after they teamed him up with Carlito and their subsequential breakup not long after Wrestlemania 22. It's gonna be hard to give him back the momentum he had back then especially since the Masterlock was broken by Lashley years ago. Masters came off as more dominant when his submission finisher was dubbed "unbreakable" and made me take him more seriously as a world title condender.

What he really needs to do is win matches obviously to get back some steam. Since he's been reduced to low card matches on Superstars, what I'd really like to see is him being booked as a monster heel. The guy is fairly decent in the ring and could probably hold his own on the mic if given the chance. I really could see him dominating Smackdown's midcard along Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre (seeing as they're the young guys being prominently pushed on Smackdown) and maybe a IC title reign. Of course, this is all just wishful thinking...

I agree with Doc on this one.

Masters has everything going for him excpet the fact that the WWE won't push him. He even lost to Chavo a few weeks back. So, I also think that they should let him win a few and let him build some momentum(sp?). Also, a little time on SD! couldn't hurt either. Of course he would need to be on there to build some credibility, but my point with that is he pretty much has none since he's jobbing on Superstars. I would really like to see him start coming to SD!, win some matches, then prove himself on the mic. Once he's at the point where he's cutting promos, with a lot of wins under his belt, then I don't see why the intercontinental championship isn't that much farther away.

The WWE just has to allow him to get there and prove he belongs.

I'd say no. They blew their chance for him even to be a modern day Val Venis when they didn't go whole hog with the Crazy Train pec dancing. They should have stayed with that song, used the lyrics to that song to repackage some moves. (I.e. "He's going off the rails!" for a second-rope splash or something, "All aboard" when he slaps on the Masterlock) With that, he could hang around for 10 years as a jobber and low-midcarder.

You know something? I actually feel sorry for Chris Masters.

I heard him on the defunct Voice Of Wrestling show a long time ago and he was talking about his career and how he wanted to go back to the WWE. When he eventually got the chance, the WWE did nothing for him and I honestly think it is a shame on his part. He was never the worst worker in the company and although his mic work left a lot to be desired, I find it actually appalling that his second run in the WWE has been worse than his first!

In his first run, he was built to look really strong with the Master Lock and I think only two people ever got out of the move. That was really smart booking and it made Chris Masters look like a legitimate threat. However, it fizzled out, as these things have the habit of doing and the WWE didn’t have anything left for him after that. In my opinion, he could have been something at that point and if his career was ever going to amount to anything, it would have been at that point. Unfortunately, the WWE didn’t share my thought process and Chris Masters was eventually released.

When he returned, I honestly thought that he would have worked on his character a little but he seems to be stuck in the Masterpiece gimmick and that is getting him absolutely nowhere. Honestly, I think he is too old and known in that gimmick and he really only has himself to blame for his career never taking off. He should have worked on his gimmick in his time off but didn’t. People barely took to it the first time and it was never going to stick the second time. Personally, I see him being released in the near future.

This guy is YOUNG!!! 27 years old!!!

I think WWE have left it late with him though, while he was using the masterpiece gimmick every week on Raw, he could have main evented then, I think something could have worked out, but his move to Smackdown killed him...He is still 27 though, maybe managers will be introduced again and he can get one and get into the main event by the time he is 30...who knows!! he has got a lot of time!!
