Why do so many people hate Tyler Black?

Kayoh

Deciding if I want to join WZCW.
Basically, my reasoning is simple. If you are an ROH fan, chances are you are not a mark. If you are an ROH fan and follow the promotion, you are likely somebody who just wants to get away from all of the soap opera bullshit surrounding WWE and TNA. So, with those facts under presumption, why the hell do so many people hate Tyler Black? Honestly, the guy is one of the best in-ring performers I have ever seen. He's a decent (sometimes great) mic worker, he's got the moveset, the ring psychology, the athleticism, literally everything anybody could ask for in a champion, and yet people still say shit like "he's overrated" or "he's too green", and I just don't get it.

So, could somebody explain to me why so many ROH fans hate Black so much?

That's a really good question.
And the answer is this: those people are idiots.

Let me break it down for you. Tyler Black is absolutely talented in the ring, he knows how to work, he has a great look, basically everything you listed. Granted, he may not be able to work entertaining 60 minute matches yet, but is that really something you can hold against him? No, I didn't think so either.
Black is only 24 years old (I believe), which makes his accomplishments even more amazing. He's got all the potential to be a huge star in the wrestling business.

The only reasonable complaint I keep hearing is about his mic skills.
You wrote he's great sometimes, but I have to disagree. I just cringe every time he starts talking because it makes me uncomfortable to watch and listen to him cut a promo that sounds like he either memorized it or is reading it off somewhere. Honestly, I do see a slight improvement though.
Also, since when have mic skills been uber important in Ring of Honor? That's right, they never have. As long as a guy could wrestle, the fans would love him (very simplified, but you catch my drift). And we know Tyler Black can wrestle.
So why exactly would people dislike him?

I think you answered the question yourself, OP. Ring of Honor fans are no marks, at least not in the traditional sense.
Tyler Black is pretty much a babyface; he's always portrayed as the good guy. Even when he's portrayed more violent, more aggressive, etc he is still more of a face than his opponents (until now).
ROH fans are no marks, therefore they don't fall for the babyface shtick. Quite the contrary, they don't like or hate it. Many of them feel like it's the cool thing to do to like the heels and dislike the babyfaces, therefore they dislike Tyler Black.

Pardon the generalisation, I know not every ROH fan is like that. Still, it is the only reason I can think of. And that reason is bullshit, which is way I say those people are idiots.

I don't get it either. I've been a big fan of Tyler Black ever since I started watching ROH, as did most of the fans. Black was getting the "Next World Champ" chants and everything. But once he won the title, he started getting booed. It seems a lot like John Cena from 2006. I guess ihating Tyler Black is the cool thing to do now. But all he does is go out and put on great match after great match. His entire reign has been nothing short of great and if he keeps going like he is now, Black will be one of the best champions in ROH history, but people will be too stupid to realize it. I don't get the Tyler Black hate at all, I really don't. And I feel bad for him when he's out there busting his ass and all he's getting are boos.

I'm adding my name to the "I don't get it list" as well. His in-ring skills are very, very good. He can put on good matches with mat based guys like Kevin Steen, strike based guys like Davey Richards, or even someone who flies around more like Generico. His mic skills do need quite a bit of work, but that's nothing that won't get better with practice. He has had a very good run as champion and anyone who has started booing him is just overly fickly and trying to be cool.

Tyler Black is easily one of my favorites. I think my first Indy match I ever saw was Black vs. Strong. He immediately drew me in. He has a presence in the ring and his move-set is amazing.

Anyone who hates this man is either

a) an idiot

b) a nit-picky wrestling ****e

Which is basically the same thing. This man has been a great champion and i'm looking forward to his WWE run.

If I may give a bit more smarky insight, people seem to think ROH shoved Tyler Black down their throats. Some goof was apparently screaming "He is the John Cena of this promotion" at one of the iPPVs.

Meanwhile, most of them probably have no idea that this is exactly what the oh-so-lauded Gabe would've done. He even says so in one of the Kayfabe Commenataries DVDs.

So, yes. They're just idiots. Aside from on the microphone, Tyler's OK.

I also do not understand the Tyler Black hate.Comparing him to John Cena is ridiculous.Tyler Black has awesome ring-skills.He's one of those guys that seem like they can do anything. He can Fight,he can fly,he can get technical, and he's damn good at it.What's not to like?,mic skills? please.

Tyler's promos have slowly started to improve. He seems a little more comfortable talking now.I don't get how they bash Black for his promos, yet somehow Roderick Strong is still treated like a god.Granted,I like strong too,but he is no better at promos than Tyler.

I think he gets too much heat.To me,it makes no sense.

I don't hate Tyler Black, but he doesn't interest me that much. He has good in-ring skills as far as a move-set. But something about him just doesn't click with me. I don't honestly know what it is, but I just can't sit through most of his matches. As for people who hate him, no idea why. But I can certainly understand people not enjoying him, hate might be a bit much, though.

Like most others in this thread I don't get the hatred either. I mean, I understand why they do, because they're jackasses, but it still baffles me that they can't be objective about the matter when rating Tyler as a performer, he's clearly a great performer in the ring, I sure as hell wouldn't go as far as the OP and say he's one of the best in the world because I could start spitting out workers I rate better fast if I wanted to here, but he's certainly no slouch in there. These fuckers act like they weren't cheering for him and chanting "Next World Champ!" at him back in the Age of the Fall days before he got the big push, but now that he's gotten it it's like now he's not good enough for them. Stupid shit, the ROH diehards can be a bit obtuse at times.

I don't understand it either. He is what, 6'2? 200-215? He has a great look, he has fantastic in ring abilities. He can work on the mat and do all the high flying stuff. His interviews leave a bit to be desired, nothing that couldn't be worked with. Do I think there is money to be made with him? Yes.

I remember seeing him wrestle in a crappy local bar in the south side of Milwaukee in front of 50 people against Marek Brave. They had to be about 19 or 20 at the time...and they just tore the place down. Marek was good, but you could instantly tell that Tyler was the breakout of the two. Marek was no slouch....just wasn't as dedicated I don't think.

The hate for Black stems solely from the need of much of the IWC to be critical of anything that is perceived as remotely popular by wrestling fans at large. The narrow-minded "better than you" attitude of these idiots does not allow them to like anything mainstream. It's happened with HHH, Cena, Mysterio and should they continue on after SS, I can see the Nexus hate bandwagon starting up. All for the sake of some ****** thinking that it is a feather in his cap to be able to say "I was the first one to hate them." People like this are not fans; they are morons who do more damage to the name of wrestling fans than those who still argue that it is 100% real.

It is the same as Black. He got rave reviews and massive amounts of support while he was part of the AOTF. Indeed, it was "cool" to cheer an individual in a heel faction yet once he got the push that the ROH crowd and IWC were clambering for all of a sudden "He is not ready" or "he is crap on the mic." Just another part of the IWCs repertoire of "We must buck the trend" idiocy. These are same the morons who might give Black a hard time for even being linked with signing a WWE contract.

Tyler Black is a great in ring performer and has been working hard on his mic skills and personna. His promos still come off as a little forced as he tends to shout more than he needs to but there is definitely a lot of talent there and plenty of dedication and willingness to get better; a combination that, if the ascent of Sheamus, Miz, McIntyre, Swagger and Nexus are anything to go by, will serve Black very well should he indeed join WWE.

I think it might be a little bit of a comparison thing. Compare Tyler Black to the other guys that ROH has put the spotlight on, Aries, McGuinness, Danielson and others then think if he really measures up. Then look at how they chose to book him during his push and you have your answer. It is not fair, and hate is obviously an overreaction, but it really is not that surprising to me. Kind of makes me wonder if the powers that be booked him as such to get him to a high level before WWE poached him since it was obvious he had a look they might like. The idea is that he might not deserve the push but it is now or never if we want to get some crossover publicity out of him in WWE. He is obviously talented in some ways but I think the obsessively critical fans got hung up on him being raw in some areas yet still getting the big push while attempting to substitute the babyface role for personality. As people have mentioned the last part can be a tough sell in an ROH type environment.

I hate to compare ROH to WWE in anyway but I have to. Black is the Cena of ROH in a way. Obviously Black is WAY better in the ring but kinda weak on the mic. Cena is the opposite. (Note to Marks: I'm not a Cena hater so don't be marking out on me in the indy section. Thank You) Both were cheered and we're the best thing going in each company when they were chasing the world titles.

Once they won the belts, bam the fans turned. Cena I can understand why. But turning on Tyler Black who has evolved so much as a wrestler since his Age of The Fall days makes no sense to me. I think its just a case of the fans wanting something new way too quick, not even giving Tyler a chance. Or, the fans just like his opponents better. Either way Tyler Black is a pretty damn good champion.

It shows the trust Cary Silkin has in him considering there are guys like Kevin Steen, Davey Richards, Roderick Strong and more who could carry the title.

Tyler Black is extremely talented in the ring like everyone else i think his promo leaves a little to be desired but other than that hes amazing there is no reason not to like Tyler Black I only started watching ROH about 8 months ago wen i was flicking through channels waiting on WWE to come on and i was so impressed with what i saw that i didnt even bother watching WWE that night instead i got on youtube and caught up on everything ROH and Tyler Black just because of his in ring style became one of my favorite wrestlers in the world

The only reason I dont like him, is because he is currently copying C.M. Punk. When Punk was signed to the WWE he teased going to the E with the ROH World belt ( if I remember correctly he even signed his wwe contract on it). Punk was a heel at that time. Now we get Black turning heel after signing to the E and now threatening to take the belt with him.

If you want the honest answer, it's because he's been the trending topic in ROH for a while, and the one thing ROH fans hate the most, is when a wrestler is pushed, and gets the title. Look at Nigel, everyone waited for him to get the belt for so long and then as soon as he does fans start getting agitated and they have to turn him heel. There's really no way to win with certain ROH fans, i'm a fan and I just enjoy the show regardless, I was happy when Lynn was champ, I was happy when Morishima was champ, and I was happy for Nigel and Aries. Tylers been no different the guy deserved it he was hugely over for a while and put on some great matches.

I think there's plenty of guys who deserved to win the belt more then Black did though, but i'm not going to hate Black cause of that.

I really think ROH fans want the title to be handed off week after week to the new guy that they love.
They hate long title reigns because they get bored of the champ. There's nothing ROH can do about that the only guy that they probably wouldn't complain about would be Danielson and he's gone now. It'll only be so long until everyone hates Roddy Strong and not because he's a heel but because they want a new champ.

I think it's very easy to see why Tyler Black is hated; he's not World champion material. Can he wrestle? Sure. But so can dozens of other people. I find Tyler Black extremely overrated when it comes to the praise he gets for his wrestling, as he doesn't stand out all that much better then lots of other names I could list. But then when you look beyond his wrestling, the guy has ZERO charisma. The guy is absolutely horrendous on the mic. He has an okay look, but besides that he has none of the natural elements that embodies a World champion and I think the fans realize and see that and they hate him because of it. They don't want a World champion who stands in the ring, with the championship over his shoulder, as the symbol of everything Ring of Honor is, and when he starts talking people cringe and see just how bad he is. That reflects on the entire promotion based off Tyler Black being the champion, the supposed best in the company. If he has no presence, can't cut a promo for the life of him, then what does that say for the rest of Ring of Honor?

With that said, I think the same problem may arise with the new champion, Roderick Strong, because he has no charisma and is just as bad on the mic. Hopefully the guys a transitional champion to someone better. So yeah, that's why people hate Tyler Black in my eyes, and I think it's justified. When he became champion his flaws were much more evident and exposed. Overrated is he.

I'll tell you why people hate Tyler. Because they're SELFISH! People get blinded by the problems they have with the WWE but they dont understand, for a wrestler to make it to the WWE is like a kid who dedicates his life to playing basketball and finally makes it to the NBA after trying his hardest. Tyler Black wants to be the best, you start at indy then you make it to the big time. Be happy for the kid, i know i am!
