Who should train Paul Heyman for in-ring time?

CM Steel

A REAL American
Paul Heyman recently did an interview about his current position in the WWE. Him being involved in 2 on 1 handicap matches is somewhat interesting. But what good that it does if Paul Heyman doesn't really know how to wrestle? At 48 years-old Paul Heyman is a modern day Captain Lou Albano right now in his current state. He's one of the greatest wrestling managers of all-time! And that says alot about the guy. And Heyman is the godfather of the now defunct ECW.

But wouldn't it be a different change of pace if one of the "Paul Heyman guys" trained Paul E? Like someone from the original ECW like a Tommy Dreamer or a Rob Van Dam? We all seen then party it up in New York at the WWE hall of fame backstage this past April. While guys like Taz and Bubba/Bully Ray (Dudley) are down in TNA Impact wrestling. Paul Heyman really needs a guy to show him how to handle himself in a ring if he's going to continue to do this kind of stuff in a wrestling ring.

But who?

No one should train him. When ever a manager is in the ring the hook is that he can't wrestle and he's gonna get his ass kicked if/when the baby face gets their hands on him.

Heyman is probably never going to learn how to wrestle outside of taking the kind of bumps he's been taking already. He's 48 years old, not in any kind of wrestling shape, and buries his tail between his legs when faced with the possibility of getting hurt. A guy that is as much of a mega-heel as Heyman shouldn't get in the ring. He does all he needs to do with the microphone and through his "Heyman Guys".

I think the most we're ever going to see is what we saw during the CM Punk feud.

As ironic as it is to refer to Paul Heyman in this manner, he's a trophy. That is, he's a wrestler's reward for accomplishing something that was considered very hard to do, as in: "Hey, Punk! Beat Ryback and we'll let you pound on Paul Heyman!"

Heyman isn't meant to fight back, isn't meant to do anything but run away. Begging and pleading are the main part of his job once the tables are turned on whomever he's supporting. When Punk knocks Ryback and Axel out of the way, Heyman suddenly realizes there are no obstacles between Punk and himself, so he becomes a total coward.....which is the polar opposite of how he acts when he's got his team in front of him.

That's what Heyman does. Training him to defend himself would defeat the purpose behind his entire persona.

Here's a thought: Paul Heyman turning face. Can you even imagine it? Wouldn't it fly in the face of everything he's done his entire managerial career? Can you imagine yourself rooting for the walrus? It seems that all performers get turns at playing heel and face if their careers last long enough, but Heyman as a good guy is something I'd have to see to believe.

Nobody. Managers need to stay managers who speak for wrestlers that are not as gifted on the mic while the wrestlers themselves do the in-ring work. This scenario reminds me of the torture we had to endure when Swagger trained Cole to work a Wrestlemania match. That should have been Swagger working the match with Cole only being in a managerial role. A similar argument can be made here. The payoff for Heyman only being a manager for "The Heyman Guys" for them to get more heel heat they could not on their own is larger than any result we might get from Heyman working a match. As good as Heyman is on the mic, I have no interest in seeing him work a match. None. Having one of his guys train him is a bad idea.

OMG the paulrus is funny as shit in the ring isnt he? HE has zero chance of beating anyone in the ring cowers and begs for his life whenever Punk got within 10 feet of him. He is almost 50 years old is in no way in any kind of shape at all to be competing. Mustang Sally is correct in saying he is a trophy.

Beat the snot out of Ryback and Heyman is yours to do whatever you want to him. I will give Heyman credit though,he most certainly takes his bumps and bruises without complaining and entertains the fans. I already miss him on TV. So no he should receive zero training as that would damage Heymans persona!

No one should train him, he's not a wrestler and doesn't belong in matches. He already knows how to take the kind of bumps a manager should be taking.

If the idea is to bring someone in to a TV role as Heymans "Trainer" just to build that person up to an eventual match and program with Punk this would be cool, show clips of him and heyman training at the wwe performance center as if he is training heyman for an actual match with Punk, then have the trainer attack punk and become the newest heyman guy I think it would work well.

An ECW guy would be likely but were pretty far removed to any other than a small handful still being able to go like they used to, so I like the idea of maybe elevating a new star for the roll, even someone from NXT like Corey Graves or Kassuis Ohno.

But ultimately I think it would work best if Paul hires Antonio Ceasaro to train him, then he begins managing him and they work a program with Punk. Even build his credibility as a trainer by showing some of those sick work out routines

Other than that, there is literally zero reason for Heyman to train on his own off camera

It's been said earlier but the idea is antithetical to the idea of wrestling managers. Heyman's job is the same as Bobby Heenan's back in the day. Show up in the ring for the match, be completely ineffective except for cheap shots, and then get pounded on to the delight of the crowd.

I remember as a kid always wanting to see Bobby Heenan get beat up during or after a match, and I think Heyman serves that purpose for today's fans. He doesn't need to be trained, like others have mentioned he is there during the match to get in a cheap shot or two and then beg for mercy if the face gets within five feet of him. He is the best manager going today, and I only wish there were more like him. There is no need for him to be trained on screen at all.
