Which bands/groups/artists will stand the test of time?

FromTheSouth

You don't want it with me.
I asked this in the barroom, but this is for bloviation, expansion, and discussion.

I have a few ideas.

1. Metallica - I am not personally a huge fan. My favorite song of their is their version of Whiskey in the Jar. But I do get their popularity, and how they never seem lost fans. No one ever talks about how cool Metallica used to be. They have a progressive sound and won't release crappy albums.

2. Jay Z - The guy puts every song at number one. It's that simple. The message he gives is universal, about striving to reach the top. Sure, not every song is appropriate for all audiences.

There are, of course, many others. I am interested in everyone's opinion, and maybe we can generate some discussion.

I was thinking about this a while ago...When we listen to classic rock, we hear bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Rush. What will our "classic" rock be.

In 10, 15, 20 years, I see bands such as 3 Doors Down, Three Days Grace, and Seether ruling "classic" rock radio. They're not too heavy, not too light, have excellent lyrics, and are all known to put on good live shows. Nirvana has stood the test of time, and may do so long in to the future, as may Foo Fighters.

I love bands like Metallica and Megadeth, but can you really picture calling them "classic rock"?

I don't see bands like Nickelback or Fall Out Boy ever being in this conversation.

Meh....ok
Three Days Grace,
I don't know who this is.

and Seether

This is the best band of those you mentioned, but Zep and Pink Floyd dominated their time, and these bands all seem like they fill a niche. They don't seem like overarching cultural phenomena. Blame it on the flooded market, or the internet, or music snobs; but in any event, I would say Zep is loved by more people this very day than any of those bands.

Nickelback could be a possibility. They might be the biggest mainstream rock band out there right now. They span all ages, both genders, and all races. It's hard to not like Nickelback.

If Fall Out Boy is ever seriously called "classic rock", I'll castrate myself. They shouldn't be making music now, much less having it stick around a while...
