What makes the BEST kind of heel?

Mr. Artistic guy

Better Off This Way
The way i see it no matter what your gimmick is, you can categorise heels into a small number of groups. You may disagree, and if you do then alls you have to do is say why. But these are the categories the way I see em:

1) Dirty heel - Classic stuff. Really ran rampant in the late 80s early 90s. Ric flair of course personifies the role but there were a lot of guys like ric flair such at ted dibiase, and a lot of guys who had managers like bobby heenan or brother love or harvey whippleman etc. Obviously hateable because they win matches without deserving to and then talk they like had it covered. Generally smaller guys these and the need a lot of good mic work. Very successful but they never look very good in the ring so they need to be good sellers, good facial expressions etc.In short these guys have to be very good wrestlers usually because they have to sell, work a match from the floor and come out on top. Probably the hardest heel role to play.

2) Monster heel - Whole list of these guys. People like vader, kane after debut, yokozuna, it is a very long list. Anyway, these guys get an easier ride because they can play upon a natural physical aspect like weight (mabel) or height (khali). They dont have to be able to do any mic wrk whatsoever but are usually covered well by a good manager (Mr Fuji). These guys can be down-right shite just like khali and they will always get a reaction because they can always set up a david-goliath style match which is always interesting to watch. It does have to mentionned that some of these guys are quite good though. Brock lesnar, Kane or vader could speak, were memorable and all amazingly athletic for their body size. More than likely the easiest role to succeed in as a lot of these guys have been successful with little talent or effort.

3) Group leaders - Can be a wide range of things. These people can range from guys like HHH in DX or evolution to eric young in world elite. More similar to the first category of guys in that they often cheat to win, but more versatile and dangerous in that they often don't have to, they can usually out-wrestle their opponent when they have to. This group has to have immaculate mic ability because they need to lead other guys and be the mouth-piece of the group and more often than not they ought to be good in the ring but it isnt a pre-requisite because they can get backed up by their cronies if necessary. Possibly the hardest role to play but it is easier to play this role badly and still get by with it as long as you have good support. Probably second hardest behind dirty heel to do right, has strengths and weaknesses.

4) Cocky heels - These guys are good wrestlers and they know about it. They brag over they're acolades til your ears bleed and are great at getting on people's tits. Includes undisputed jericho, Miz and jonny nitro for example. They aren't always necessarily great on the mic but have a knack for being damned annoying, that may sound like a contradiction but it isn't (x-pac, jeff jarrett). These guys probably make up by percentage the highest of any heel category so it is assumedly an easier role to play. Well yes and no. Yes it is an easier role but you have to fend off all the competition. Requires little inginuity to make work, just being able to make outrageous claims like your the best ever, but obviously that doesnt mean every guy can do it well.

5) The social outcast - These can be divided into two groups, the mentally corrupted (generally psychopaths) and the dark shadowy loners. It's a difficult type of heel to pull off because you have to be good at making original ground-breaking promos like cactus jack in the early ECdub, makind in 96-7 days or say raven his entire career. There aren't that many that come to mind. The great example would be The Loose Cannon Brian Pillman. Others would be Jake Roberts, Raven, Sycho Sid, and Mankind, and arguably if we are looking for examples from today we could say Abyss, mickie james or now jeff hardy in recent years.Thats right WWE dpesn't really have many of these guys, probably worried they'll have to delve in the mental health area. These are the guys that will turn on anybody at anytime for any reason. I'd also put Golddust in this catagory back when he first debuted in 95. Not trying to say acting gay makes you crazy, but he was incredibley unpredictable and had no allies and he really creeped out the whole roster. The social outcasts are one of the best kinds ever because it makes the whole roster watch their back.

6) The fortunate/privileged - These are the heels who are able to use money, political power, or favoritism with the boss to get away with whatever they wish. Ted Debiase Sr. was a good example of the money aspect of this, but many heels (or those going through heel phases) made use of this. Triple H did it by being the boss's son-in-law and GM's husband for a while in his career. Batista and Randy Orton belonged to this category when they were McMahon's favorites. More recently, Drew McIntyre has been making an entire gimmick out of being "hand-picked by Vince McMahon". As we all know, Edge made use of that with his marriage to Vickie Guerrero when she was Smackdown GM. It's an instant and economical heat draw because being in bed with the boss (so to speak) makes you more or less untouchable. It makes for an instantly hatable heel. Being powerful gives you a big target on your back meaning everybody watches you, especially if you didn't earn that power.

OK well thats how I see it anyway, if you can think of any more categories or disagree with any or have any other queries dont hesitate. Have fun.

Did a pretty good job at categorizing the heels here. Of course, a few fit into multiple groups. I do think, however, that there is one category missing.

The Privileged: These are the heels who are able to use money, political power, or favoritism with the boss to get away with whatever they wish. Ted Debiase Sr. was a good example of the money aspect of this, but many heels (or those going through heel phases) made use of this. Good thread man. I can think of one more kind to heel.

Psycho These are the guys that act for no reason whatsoever. It's probably the hardest type of heel to pull off. There aren't that many that come to mind. The best one ever was The Loose Cannon Brian Pillman. Others would be Jake Roberts, Raven, Sycho Sid, and Mankind. These are the guys that will turn on anybody at anytime for any reason. I'd also put Golddust in this catagory back when he first debuted in 95. Not trying to say acting gay makes you crazy, but he was incredibley unpredictable and had no allies. He really creeped out the whole roster. The psycho heel was one of the best kinds ever. Sadley, no one has done it right in years.

I prefer the more SADISTIC/EVIL HEEL

I know what I want to say, but struggling to put it into words. I like the characters such as Raven/Triple H as the cerebral assassin/Jeff Hardy's new persona. I like the idea that you never know what they are thinking, but you know someone is going to get seriously injured. As we saw Hardy annialate Anderson with the chair, Helmsley regularly use his sledgehammer on people etc.

I think its great when guys like Raven, HHH and Hardy get inside the heads of their opponents. Raven was/and still is the master of this, his promos really do prove he is the master of mind games, and HHH is not far behind. I much prefer his work as a heel. Hardy on the other hand is new to this, but I can see him becoming a more Raven-esque character and becoming really sadistic and cruel. These guys really do not give a shit about their opponents, and want to destroy them from the inside out, and I love that

What MAKES a good heel?

1) You've gotta have good mic skills. If you ain't got 'em, you're gonna find it very difficult to pull a heel character off alone. Or you can get someone else to do your talking. Jericho is my main one here, who pulls off some great heel promos, that draw heat in a good way (Unlike say, Vickie G.)

2) The look. Lots of heels, like, Orton, Jericho, Miz & Punk all have the smirk drawn on their face pretty much 100% of the time. If not a smirk, then a cold hard stare into the opponents eyes.

3) The ability to go absolutely nuts when it's called for. We've seen Orton attack Steph Mac right in front of her own husband, whilst he was handcuffed to the ropes. He kicks people in the head for fun. A good heel needs to pull off a good heel attack.

I appreciate the categories guys, but do try to remember to answer the thread. Which category garners the most heat or is the most entertaining to you?

Sorry I posted this AFTER the two entries above me.

The catagory I mentioned is the one most entertaining to me dude, and it wasnt one that you mentioned.

But, out of the ones you did list...I have always liked a heel faction, the group leader. Examples include Vinny Mac as leader of The Corporation, Triple Hi in Evolution, and Hogan in the nWo, where they would always get their cronies to do their dirty work, and could talk as much trash as they liked as they always had the numbers to back it up. That kind of heel always works well with me, as bullies always like to stick in groups rather than go it alone. Definately my pick

Sorry if you didnt think I had answred your question 1st time around, I thought I had

There's a lot of great heel types.

Yet the heel that I really like the most is the "Best in the world" heel. Now some might wonder who this type of heel is. I'll refreshen your memory. Ric Flair, Triple H, Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels. All of these guys have expressed themselves as the best that the business had to offer. They carry themselves around like they truly are the best in the world, and they might very well be.

The main thing that stands out for them, are well like I mentioned in a thread I created in this section as well - They're suit wearing. They're superior looking, and they know that they can beat anybody in the world. And they express this very fact thoroughly and rather often.

And not only is it a moniker. They managed to carry it out in the ring every time they stepped in there. Either dominating, showcasing themselves at a much superior level or quite simply displayed the whole package in terms of a wrestler. The cream of the crop if you will.

No "Stoogey Heel"? =(

I think people now and days totally forget the impact on a match/storyline of babyface knocking a floozie around. In a lot of cases, the floozie was there to make the crowd go absolutely bananas because FINALLY some retribution. Granted the stooge wasn't the final boss, but man the crowd didn't care. They wanted to see the intensity and passion from the babyface as he was knocking some teeth. Mainly because the floozie would flail around like he had been shot out of a canon. Bumpin' Buddy Roberts was amazing at this role. There were so many Freebirds vs Von Erichs match in which Roberts got his ass kicked for the first 10 minutes of the match.. And the crowd went apeshit like you wouldn't believe it.

Another good thing about the stoogey heel is that it allows people who won't get the push or don't have the skills of the person they are paired with, to show that they are loaded with personality. In the WWE, two people come to mind: Layla and Michael Traver.

Does anyone really think that Michelle is more important in that LayCool act that Layla? Layla is the one that takes all the silly spots. Layla is the one that eats pinfalls. Layla is the one that runs around like a chicken with its head cut off. Layla is the one that brings the fire and sass of that group.

Michael Traver was also a great stooge for Wade Barrett. The guy was all talk. He was often the first get taken out in group attacks if there was a guy taken out. He would find ways to stumble and bumble around the ring when he missed a spot. What I mean is that he had great "Charlie Brown" spots.

The best type of heel is the "Righteous" heel. It could fall under the "cocky" type, but with a slight variation.

Whether it be bragadocious claims, or reasons for justifying their actions, there's always alot of truth in what they're saying. Take CM Punk for example. There's alot of good, truthful things in his words. Being straight edge is a good thing. But he uses it to justify his heinous actions. The message is good, but the way he spreads it is bad. His feud with Rey Mysterio was proof positive of that.

Jericho is much the same way. A champion all over the world. the first ever Undisputed cxhampion. But he never fails to remind his peers of that as he boasts over them without remorse. It's because "he's the best in the world at what he does", that makes his actions ok. And he's right, about being the best in the world. But his actions, not so much.

Take his feud with HBK. Was he right that HBK faked a knee injury to get ahead? Yeah, he was. But his actions, such as putting him through the Jeritron, or attemtping to destroy his eye, were not.

Those are the types of heels I like the most. The ones that can find a grain of truth to justify their actions, and for a minute, convince you they're right, until you consider what their actions truly were that followed.

Fine you know what, I've decided you can't make groups of heels. or if you do there are shedloads as I've found out. So yeah, still doesn't mean there can't be a BEST category. For me, I probably like the social outcast one the most, its the most original, intriguing and different for me. Miles away from the other categories.

There are three types of heels that really stand out to me. Of course mic skills, in ring ability and overall look will make a difference in the type of heel I like. The best heels are the Cocky type, Righteous type, and the Evil type of heels.

Evil
The rebel type of heels. Like Randy Orton's Viper gimmick in 2009. The type of guys that destroys your favorite wrestlers. Randy Orton was a perfect type. The way he just slithered around the ring lurking and stalking his opponents until he finally got his chance to hit the RKO. His look was perfect. The tatoos did so much for his gimmick and character. When he attacked Stephanie McMahon in front of Triple H who was handcuffed, I lost it. It was absolutely an amazing moment. He got so much heat for that. And to top it off, he kissed his wife right in front of him. Another great example is the masked Kane. Or even the Kane in 2003 when he took off the mask. Setting JR on fire will always be one of my favorite memory from WWE History. This type of heel is one of my favorites.

Cocky
Another one of my favorite types of heel is the cocky kind. The Miz, and Alberto Del Rio come to mind. Alberto has all the looks. His smile and wink combonation makes you want to beat the fuck out of him. Add in how rich he is with the good cars and amazing look, the crowd has no choice but to hate him. He knows he has "it". He knows he is a future World Heavyweight Champion. And the crowd hates it. The Miz is also a cocky type heel. He talks the talk but doesn't necessarily walk the walk. He gets his ass handed to him in the ring but it doesn't stop him from talking shit. A classic case of he needs his ass kicked and I'll be the one to do it.

Righteous
The Righteous type I seen earlier in the thread has to be one of my more favorites. I'm better than you because I'm right and you're wrong. Whatever I do, I'll suceed, and you fail. I'm simply better than you because I'm not like you. None other than CM Punk (that I can think of) have played this type. And only Punk can. Punk is Straight Edge in and outside the ring which makes it so realistic. To me, this type of heel reminds me somewhat of a cult. There's a leader, and there's the followers. Most people don't see it his way but that doesn't stop him from telling us that he's better in every way-a charcteristic that every heels needs in my opinion.

It's not hard to figure out what makes the best heel. The whole point of a heel is to make the fan angry enough to dislike him/her. A lot of fans like anti-heroes, so all of the heels who get cheered are doing it wrong. The best heels are the ones who legitimately tick you off. JBL and Alberto Del Rio are good examples and thus was one of the best heels because people legitimately detest them. They are doing their job of making you dislike them, whereas most heels don't and end up anti-heroes. Take Edge for example, you're SUPPOSED to hate the guy but his popularity is through the roof.
