No, you're an idiot. In war, it was customary to stop during the Winter. They didn't have that option, so they decided to be civil for a short period of time. Have you seen what war is like? No. You don't know what those men went through. They fought for their lives, for their countries. They started killing each other again because that's what they were told. I swear to God, you get stupider and stupider by the minute.

They stopped because it was Christmas. A time for giving and sharing and the only day of the year where most people celebrate a common bond. It was the only time of the year where it was going to happen.

I doubt that the Kaiser or the Prime Minister were Planning on Making a Treaty Just Because it Was a Common Holiday that the Troops Celebrated

What is the matter with some people on here? This is a perfectly legitimate "What If" question. The world would be a very different place had the First World War ended at Christmas 1914.

The "Christmas ceasefire" of 1914 and its accompanying football match was about the last hurrah of Victorian chivalry and the masses of British, German, French and others soldiers almost rebelling over the conditions in the trenches and the futility of type of warfare that had started to dominate. That they started fighting again was a tribute to the loyalty and patriotism of the men on both sides.

It is difficult to not see the conflict continuing (like many of you have said in an overly snide way as usual) as the horrors of trench warfare had yet to unfold, while the war in the east had barely gotten started. However, had the war ended in 1914, the 20th century, which was shaped by the horrors and casualties of both World Wars, would be very different. Perhaps no Communist/Stalinist Russia; perhaps no Facist Italy; perhaps no Hitler; perhaps no UN; no Cold War; perhaps no collapse of the British Empire.

Well said, no need for all the hate

Pretty reasonable question actually, in an ideal world the cease fire would have continued (well in an ideal world the world wouldnt have started but you get the idea). However in reality, if that one guy didn't start shooting another would have, the orders would have come down from the upper ranks and it would have just continued. Years of war and tension between the nations, not everyones gonna want to just give up and go home.
