What If Matt Hardy Had Gone Over Edge?

Due to Edge's extra backstage activities with Lita, and Matt Hardy's big mouth in 2005 Matt Hardy found himself unemployed from the WWE.

Upon making his return Hardy feuded again with the womanizer Edge for his pride due to Edge making moves with Lita.

It seemed like Hardy was going to have the upper hand in this feud as the man betrayed by his woman and a friend. After a few back and forth matches between the two, Edge came out on top, and started his ascension to the top of the WWE Universe.

buuuuuuut....

What if Matt Hardy would have gone over Edge... ?

What if Matt Hardy would have received the push that Edge got at that point in time?

What if in their "Loser Leaves Raw Match" at WWE Homecoming Matt Hardy beat Edge, and captured the MITB Briefcase and went on to win his first WWE/WHC ?

Do you think Matt Hardy could have been a credible threat to John Cena ?

What would have happened to Edge, would he have become an 11 time WHC/WWE champion?

Would we have still got the Rated R Superstar, Rated RKO, Cena vs Edge, Edge vs Undertaker, Edge and Vickie, and all the other Edge related gems of the past 7 years?

How would the landscape of the WWE be different if Matt Hardy would have been pushed to the moon instead of Edge?

i know alot of people are going to shit on me for what i'm about to say, but screw it, I will say it anyway. I thought that at wrestlemania 22 it should have been edge vs. matt hardy for the wwe title. I mean First look at matt hardy in 2005. Matt Hardy was as over as John Cena in 2005, when he entered arenas the crowd would go ape shit. And to all of you who say "matt hardy was never over" have never watched wrestling in 2005, or even 1998-2010 for that matter. Him and edge also had one of the best fueds that i have ever seen, with some great great matches. Well edge obviously won, but matt hardy's popularity didn't seem to wain. And i thought when edge cashed in his mitb breifcase to win the title that he would then face matt hardy for the title at wrestlemania obviously with a matt hardy royal rumble win, but that was never to be.

Edge got to where he was due to hard work, nothing was ever handed to him. If Edge wasn't pushed to the moon then, it would of been the next feud. A guy like Edge was bound to break out. If Hardy was pushed, that would of been great but eventually he would of crashed and burned just like his brother unfortunately. It wouldn't of stopped Hardy from doing drugs and ruining his life. That was a result of just being a wrestler and the hard work schedule. If anything it very well might of accelerated his drug use, due to more pressure and a bigger work load. If Hardy did though go over Edge at the time, maybe it would of resulted in a short WHC title run, but I highly doubt much more then that.

Matt had a great run in WWE, his match with Jeff at WM 25 was one of the best matches that night and that brings me to wonder if Jeff carried him there and maybe since the beginning of their career, but what if Matt had entered the WWE alone? Then where could Matt be? We clearly don't know but i think Matt wasn't used to his full potential because of the Jeff and the way Jeff preformed and it make Matt look less talented but I'm not saying Matt wasn't talented.

It'd be weird having two brothers go at it for a world title when one was clearly more hyped up and talented than the other, not saying it wouldn't be interesting but we know the WWE wouldn't have done that with the Hardys.

Personally though, I can't see Matt in a main event for a world title, I can't see him going one on one with Cena or Orton for a world title, if he were still around.

Regardless, I think Edge was clearly the better choice, but that's just my opinion.

This helped Edge find his "Rated R Superstar" nickname, but Edge was on his way to stardom and would have gotten there with or without the win in this feud. If Hardy had gone over Edge he would have ended up lost in the shuffle shortly aftwerwards. Look at Alex Riley today. He got a huge face reaction for beating up the Miz. Then when that wore off, suddenly the fans remembered that he sucks and then the push died down. He gets lost in the shuffle. Same would have happened to Matt Hardy.

Hardy would NOT have received the push Edge got. There is no way that he could have pulled off a Rated R or Ultimate Opportunist persona. The announcers kept calling him "a main event waiting to happen", but "a main event that will never happen" was more like it. If Hardy had gotten Edge's briefcase then MITB would be very different. Edge set the pace with his opportunistic cash-in that has been followed by all of the other winners but RVD and probably Bryan at some point. I doubt that Hardy would have set such a pace, and MITB might not even be around anymore today had he been the first one to cash in.

Hardy could never have been a credible threat to John Cena. He couldn't even be a credible threat to his own brother in their feud. Matt would still have found himself lost in the shuffle, with MAYBE one world title win if he cashed in. The guy could not get over. Edge could. That's why he was an 11 time world champion. We still would have seen the Rated R Superstar make his way to the top of the card, become the ultimate opportunist, and given us epic feuds like Cena/Edge and Taker/Edge. The only thing that would have changed is that Matt Hardy might have gotten his one and only world title win out of this if he went over Edge. Everything else would have gone similarly to the way it did in real life due to Edge having what it takes to be a top guy, and Matt Hardy sucked.

In what world was Matt Hardy ever as over as John Cena? Yes, he got the sympathy chants because his chick cheated on him in real life, but after the first couple of weeks being back his reactions died down significantly. Why? Because he somehow managed to fuck up a storyline based on real life because of his astounding lack of charisma. I'm interested as to how you think Edge vs. Matt Hardy for the WWE Championship would have somehow been superior to Edge vs. Foley and Cena vs. Triple H for the title, both of which are matches that I can still watch and enjoy to this day. Matt Hardy is inferior to all four of those people in almost every way and should not have been involved anywhere near the top of that Mania. Maybe if he had actually maintained his overness like you're trying to claim, then I could see it. But that's revisionist history at its finest.
