What does it mean when people and media talk about US troops and say they are overseas to defend us?

I always hear or read that our fine soldiers are sent to Iraq and Afghanistan to defend us or things like that. What does that mean?

2) The "we fight them over there so they don't come kill us over here" defense is bullshit, always has been. That doesn't take away from the job our military does, but the interest of the military isn't purely to protect us, it's also to protect our interests/allies globally.
