Friday night, ABC dusted of Dick Clark, sat him upright, and let him slur like the professional he is as he counted us into 2011 the only way he knows how: With the eyes of the world on him. That's right: Once again, Dick Clark sits atop the New Year's Eve ratings charts. Clark proved what Roddy Piper has been saying for years: Old school is cool. If anything, this news should inspire TNA Wrestling to sigh with relief as Dick Clark affirms that their business model can be successful in today's television market. But that's not what I want to talk about here. What I would like to discuss is what implications this could have for the WWE.
It's been reported recently that Vince McMahon is high on the three man booth. With CM Punk back in action, Matt Striker on the outs, and Todd Grisham really on the outs, the door is open for someone new to step into the booth and join the winner's circle with Cole and Lawler. And while Josh Matthews appears to be that hot property these days, I can't shake the feeling that he's not the best they can get. Which got me to thinking: Does Dick Clark's latest ratings win open the door for a possible return to the commentary table for Bobby Heenan? Would old school fans welcome this? With his new DVD in stores now, I can't see WWE resisting bringing Heenan in for at least a few shows to test the waters and plug their newest release. Not to mention that WWE loves being part of the mainstream. What's hotter right now than a once lively, witty has-been giving it the college try in spite of a health-induced speech impediment?
Is there any downside to this idea?
