You don't want it with me.
This thread is for the debaters only. It will be open until 6 PM CST Sunday

Nita will be affirming the topic.

Resolved: The will of the majority outweighs the liberty of the individual.

As long as the cost of one's actions aren't borne by others (in economic terms, as long as one's actions don't produce negative externalities), no one should be proscribed from what they feel like doing. Of course, when we think of costs, we only think in physical and financial terms. Unfortunately, these are not the only means through which someone's actions may affect others; we must also consider the emotional and psychological costs of one's actions. However, this is a problem that can easily be overcome.

A not insignificant portion of moral discussion in today's Western societies deals with sex and recreational drug use. And, I think it's time we all recognize that moral discussion over these issues originates from nothing more than feelings of jealousy and attempts to express this jealousy in a shame-inducing manner. For example, let's say that I'm a salesman, and that I am tied for the most sales in my store with another salesman. However, this is where the similarity ends: while I work hard, he hardly has to work at all; while my need for achievement drives me to forgo a life outside of work, it is known to the whole store that my coworker goes out five nights a week to party and gets laid by three different women per week as well. Unfortunately, very few people are as lucky as my hypothetical coworker. Hell, it will probably even be the case that he eventually settles down with a woman whom most of us would die to marry. But, that's just the way the cookie crumbles. And, since I'm unlike this guy and wish I could have his life, without a proper examination of this situation, I will probably play the morality card and try to disgrace him in order to make myself feel better.

Ultimately, even though the majority of people in the world are like me, the salesman (when we generalize from the aforementioned situation to all of life's situations), we shouldn't resort to making life worse for others, as this does nothing for our long-term well-being. Rather, we should stop trying to compare ourselves to others and instead set goals for ourselves that don't explicitly involve outdoing a particular person. You want to go party and get laid? Go out to a club. If that doesn't work, book a flight to Nevada and get yourself a high-class prostitute, as you more than deserve it. You want to succeed without any effort? For most of us, that's not feasible. Deal with it and stop thinking about those that can succeed without any effort.

In conclusion, I say live and let live. So long as the laws of the majority do not appeal to the financial and physical well-being of all who must abide by them, then there's no reason to let these laws determine the way you live.

TDigle wins.

Nita gets zero
TDigle wrote a good post with a great hypothetical. He gets 43 points. It's unfair, but you are being punished for not being allowed to show your rebuttal skills.
