I liked the movie...FWIW, but maybe it's just my soft side for all things Indian playing up. The love story is engaging but the rest of the movie is just slightly above average if you ask me. Funny thing is that almost a similar movie was made by an Indian director a couple of decades back and it even got an Oscar nomination but did not do business anywhere.

I thought I'd dislike Slumdog, but I actually rather enjoyed it truth be told. Wall-E was still the best film of the year by like 4,000 miles, but entertaining none-the-less.

Can somebody give me a rough summary of the movie, Never saw it when it came out. I know it's about like a game show or something with arabian kids right?

They're Indian. The idea is the main character is on their version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire but he's been accused of cheating because there's no logical reason for an uneducated kid to know this stuff. His explanation is basically his life story where he explains how he learned all of it.

Overrated? Yes. But a piece of garbage? Absolutely not. I thought it was an interesting idea and they did a faily decent job of projecting that onto the screen. I didn't leave the theatre wowed by it, but I certainly didn't hate it, either.

I watched it solely because of its overwhelming critical praise. Did it have great technical merit? Perhaps. But just because it was a technically sound, critic-pleasing movie doesn't mean that I'm overly entrained by it. For example, Avatar was highly praised, but I didn't think too much of it.

Great movie. Inspirational too. My part Indian ethnicity my have something to do with this but, I tend to like movies with good OSTs.

EDIT: Also, was I alone in waiting for the host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in Slumdog to say "who vants to bee a millonayr!?" in Mission Impossible 4?

It was interesting to see how the kid knew the answer to each question because of a different tragic event in his life for each one.

"Feel good film of the year"- I don't think so. Quite a sad film until the end really.

Do you mean Salaam Bombay by Mira Nair? I thought that it was significantly better than Slumdog.

Yes. I always thought it was directed by Shekhar Kapur but I guess I was wrong. It's definately the better film but hey, Slumdog's gotta be better because an English dude directed it.

I watched Slumdug Millionaire two years after its original release and I wasn't expecting to like it but I actually thought it was excellent. It received a lot of praise, but after watching it I feel like it deserved it. Don't know how it could be called boring.

True, but then again most Indian films which have contained Rahman's better works have hardly got any recognition overseas. I'm just glad he won it. It felt like it was long overdue for him.

And yeah, even the works Rahman has done post Jai Ho have been much better, Rockstar being the best example.

The thing that makes me uncomfortable about Slumdog Millionaire is the fact that even though a film based on India got so much adulation, our country's poverty was one of it biggest themes.
