Vince McMahon is lucky that he is the only billionaire who is interested in maintaining a sports entertainment organization with professional wrestling as its focus.
One thing we as people love, is a great show. A grand spectacle would be a better way to describe it. We are entertained by large crowds, fireworks, great music, and flashy logos with bright colors. The WWE with all of the revenue they generate are able to provide us with this, as they know appearance and marketing go a long way in keeping viewers and customers. Even if the product isn't "the best", as long as the marketing is top notch a company can succeed. Does McDonald's make the best cheeseburger in the world? Most will say no, but they sell the most cheeseburgers because they have the money to market them as the best. Same scenario with the WWE.
One of the reasons many people including myself have shunned other wrestling promotions is because they don't have a big stage feel, and their presentation is sub par in comparison to the WWE. I have to admit that the "low budget" look and feel of the other federations is what keeps me away from following and supporting them as much as I do the WWE, which I have been a fan of since I was a child. However after looking closely you will notice that the actual wrestling, storylines, as well as energy put in by the workers is in many ways leaps and bounds beyond what the WWE is currently offering. The last time a billionaire became interested in Sports Entertainment we were given WCW, which was a great alternative to the WWE and at the same time was still able to put on a show of large proportions, which made it easier to watch.
Vince McMahon has lost his hunger to create a great fan orientated product. He is focused on WWE shareholders, merchandise sales and publicity, which is what he believes will in turn create ratings. His is forgetting that in regards to his television shows, the fans come first, and fans create shareholders, shareholders don't create fans. He is putting the same people in matches because he believes the biggest names are the ones that will draw, regardless of how many times they fight each other. This couldn't be further from reality in 2009 with 6 hours of programming each week and 15 pay per views a year. Vince is lucky that he has the money to keep the spectacle of professional wrestling alive and well in the WWE and that his current competition cannot do the same. They do not have the money to promote their product in the mainstream the way Vince does. They cannot reserve large venues, they cannot have established artists such as Motorhead, and Three Six Mafia create theme songs for their talent, and they do not have the money to travel all around the world. They must remain local. However, if they had the right investor behind them, with the hunger to succeed and please fans as opposed to shareholders, the WWE would be in big trouble. TNA gets a bad rep with many fans because its looked at as a "low budget" WWE. Transversely WCW took many stars from the WWE in its heyday and was never given that moniker simply because they had the money to put on an equally enticing visual show.
The WWE has watered down professional wrestling more way more than many of us actually like to accept. Its watered down to the point where we call wrestlers superstars, we do not get blood, and instead of female wrestlers we have divas. However, we still stick with the product because we grew up with this company, and they are able to create an experience that keeps the crowd pumped. Unfortunately we rarely get anything that is memorable or timeless, which is why many now refer to the Monday Night Wars and Attitude Era as the "Golden Age Of Wrestling".
Entertainment is about visuals and the WWE has that department on lock. They have an extraordinary set up with top of the line video editing for promos, and some of the best cameras money can buy. They are able to make use of the great sound systems that our arenas have to offer as opposed to setting up a few speakers in a bingo hall or high school gym. Basically, they have money. Vince is lucky that he has Donald Trump on his side and that this is just an angle, because if a guy like Donald Trump was serious about wrestling, he could easily start his own promotion and take many fans away within a few months. Vince is lucky he has money and that others don't, and he should take and advantage and improve his overall product before someone else sees a business opportunity and capitalizes.
