Unscripted '12: World Heavyweight Championship Hell in a Cell Match Discussion

Showtime

It's Showtime!
'Showtime' David Cougar (c) vs. Steven Holmes vs. Drake Callahan vs. Titus

At Meltdown 80, Showtime learned that two of his opponents at Unscripted would be Steven Holmes and Drake Callahan. At Supershow II, WZCW Legend Titus became the third and final challenger in what was then announced as a Fatal Four Way Hell in a Cell match for the WZCW World Heavyweight Championship. Will the champion be able to overcome the odds and retain the title after nearly losing it at Meltdown 81? Has Steven Holmes gone over the edge in his pursuit for the World Title? Does the former champion Drake Callahan have a plan to reclaim his lost glory? Can Titus pull out all the stops one more time and win a record third World Title reign?

As it is, for better or worse, this could easily leave us with yet another world title change. Anyone of the four could emerge as champion, which on the one hand is a good thing but on the other can tie Creative's hands, upsetting plans.

I know it is something of a tradition now to have such four cornered HIAC matches for the title but for my money this should instead be the final showdown between Showtime and Drake inside the Cell or not.

Holmes' position within the match is somewhat debatable as his burgeoning feud with Big Dave while not only equally unnecessary having no end game outside of a Phoenix comeback, it has very little to do with the world title. This diverts him away from what should have been a perfectly natural and straightforward jump up to challenging Showtime, had he come out of the feud with Drake with the title.

Character wise, Holmes is also undergoing a completely unnecessary alteration. By throwing his financial/political weight around Elite Holmes was charging towards the main event and in no need of a change. Instead, now we have the quite frankly unnecessary firing/rehiring of Holmes and his descent into madness, which are at best a rehashing of an recently used plot used with Showtime or at worst stepping directly on Barbosa's creative toes or stealing a SHIT idea.

Titus is a wildcard as Lee is always capable of winning any match at any time but despite him quite rightly winning the Battle Royale, he belongs in this match even less than Holmes. Titus has two tailor-made feuds with Chris KO and Steamboat Ricky and should be taking the first steps down either of those routes at Unscripted.

Diversity of World title contenders can be good but it can also divert from more logical steps.

As for the winner... I find it very difficult to look beyond Titus doing it again.

Can I ask a question I've always wanted to know the answer to?

Well, regardless of your answer to that, I'll ask anyway.

What's the obsession with the annual four way Hell in a Cell? As smarks, surely we'd favour a one-on-one affair inside of what can potentially be wrestling's ultimate score-settler.

Surprised you asked this, you of all people know that smarks like nothing more than what we deem to be traditional.

Oh, I suspect that's a large factor in this. But why make it a tradition in the first place? It's so... un-smark-like. And really, a desire for a blood-feud to end in a match like this is one of those smark-tastes I just agree with.

For the record, I'm not trolling at all. I'm just really curious what logic or train of thought led us to yet another Unscripted four way inside HIAC.

It's been used four times, three for Unscripted and once at Ty's request for Ty/Barbosa. It's not like we have a PPV named after it. The reason for it is tradition only. We felt that with Holmes/Drake/Showtime all in the title picture that it was suitable to be used once more.

We know we have a crowded main event. I would mind but the four of the best writers in the fed are in this match. Any of these four could win and I would be happy.

Personally I feel HIAC is more connected to Ty Burna than it is or should be to Unscripted, so I can accept the argument against. I blame Showtime's greed for wanting to pump up the hype for the last match of 2012.

What Coco said makes a lot of sense. The few times WWE has used the Hell in a Cell in a non one-on-one format the matches have been... weak, and generally there for a cheap pop (like Dx vs. Legacy, or Dx vs. The McMahons and Big Show). The Hell in a Cells people remember are the ones that were the penultimate matches in vicious feuds, not the ones that were thrown together for the purpose of an easy thrill.

I'm all for fatal four way title matches, but putting it in a cell is dumb. A four way TLC match seems way more appetizing than a four man Hell in a Cell.

Edit: Also, everything Barbosa said. I really hope there's a Showtime retention here so Holmes can continue his feud with Big Dave, Titus can feud with Chris K.O., and Drake can feud with Triple X. That's right, I want Triple X vs. Drake Callahan.

I'm hoping Showtime retains the belt. I'd be fine with Titus winning as well but as others have already said I was completely expecting him vs Steamboat or K.O. at Unscripted, those feuds need to happen, plus Holmes is feuding with Dave, and I unfortunately lost interest in Callahan lately. Problem is I don't see who Showtime feuds with after this if he does win. I guess Constantine could cash in maybe, or how how about the Power Trip does it RVD style and tells Showtime he'll cash in at AON in a match of his rules and choosing.

This is the hardest contest to predict because all four men can win this match. Showtime is always a difficult competitor to wrestle against and if you beat him, cherish that moment; Holmes has been on a tear recently and this title shot has been a long time coming so he'll be a credible threat; Titus is a wildcard in the sense that he wins & loses matches you don't expect him to; Callahan is probably the only thing close to a certainty that I can say that he might not win but he has won his fair share of matches.

My gut feeling is leaning for Showtime to retain here and if he does, that's excellent. Titus has got leftover business with Ricky/K.O and Holmes has got a huge chip on his shoulders with Dave that could be resolved. No matter what happens; Callahan & Showtime should stay away from each other after this... a Triple X/Callahan feud could be awesome. X can really go up a notch by playing on Callahan's past.

To jump on the bandwagon, pretty much everything Barbosa (including the comments about Holmes's gimmick), Coco and JGlass said regarding this one.

Suffice to say we have four of the most thorough writers in this one, which means lots of talk about teenage angst and expressions and other some such, which means that I may not be able to make it through all four RP's, and certainly not in one sitting. That said, they are also four of the most successful guys here and picking a winner aint easy, but as the posters above (and more on top) have mentioned Titus and Holmes have business elsewhere, I wouldnt be against a win for either however as the World Title could easily be dragged into their commitments, although whether Showtime should dragged with it is harder to determine.

I agree with the consensus that the HIAC could have waited for a 1 v 1 feud, (perhaps Showtime and Callahan could resume their feud later down the line when both are titleless), with this still remaining a fatal four way, I feel there is a sense of a load that has been blown to early, which makes me a dissapointed young woman who now feels she has too wilfully thrown herself into your arms. Still, its not a bad way to see off the year (provided the show is posted this year *chortle chortle*) there is plenty of stuff tailor made for the losers to step into afterwards and plenty of people on the horizon for everyone to think about. With the added affect that two out of the four people involved could change the World Title scene almost completely.

Plus there is the looming presence of Constantine for the winner.

To be perfectly honest, I see this match being quite the complete clusterfuck that it promises to be.

All four of these guys could have won the match heading into it but I think that Showtime has done enough to come out of the match with the Championship. Having read through the 4 RP's, that was the effort that pulled me in the most. I think that he is heading into the event with a lot of momentum and he has really pulled it out of the bag once again.

That said, all four RP's were strong and it really is going to come down to how Creative votes. With three of them excluded from voting, this is going to be an even closer match than anyone could imagine. There will only be 4 members of Creative voting on this match, so if they are giving the public a vote in this one through the votes we all cast, that could be the decider.

I still think Showtime will emerge victorious though.
